21、Does eating have anything to do with exercise in our daily life? Some experts suggested that we should wait before exercise after eating. And the food you eat will decide how long you will wait before exercise.
Though not everyone who exercises after a meal experiences problems, eating a meal too close to the time you exercise could lead to discomfort. It’s because most food s take hours to digest and some people feel uncomfortable in the process, which could get in the way of meaningful exercise. “For some, eating right before exercise could cause an upset stomach.” adds Allen, a professor at Missouri State University.
According to recent researches, waiting to exercise after eating may better the quality of your exercise. It can improve one’s physical condition and better the exercise. The question then for many people comes down to how long they should wait between eating and exercising — a question to which there is no clear answer.
A good rule is for the time to correlate with the size of the meal one eats. “If you have a big meal such as a toast and potatoes, wait three to four hours to exercise. For a smaller meal such as a sandwich or a protein bar, wait about two hours. For something light like a piece of fruit or orange juice, thirty to sixty minutes is fine.” she advises.
But there is no hard and fast rule, and the time recommended can vary. “The time you wait depends on you, so experiment and see how long works best for your body.” says Allen, “If you can stand it, feel free to eat a healthy snack before you exercise. What I strongly recommend is to pay attention to your body’s needs and do what is best for you.”

22、I did have a really amazing time in Rio! I worked as a volunteer there to promote (提高) the local people’s awareness (意识;认知) of their own health. Therefore, I stayed there for a period of time. During this period of time, I learnt how to take blood pressure and how to give advice in Portuguese to people with high or low blood pressure. I also gave some English lessons at the building or clinic (诊所) I was in when I was not very busy.
When I think of those days in Rio, I would say that really a volunteer should stay at least for four weeks in order to have time to settle in and see progress in their work, especially since volunteering is only four days a week. Also, on the health program, I found that there wasn’t work to do unless you made work. For example, the volunteer I was working with had set up a blood pressure awareness program. So some days we went around the poor areas in the city where only the poorest local people live. I went there to measure people’s blood and give them advice about their life. We felt quite full while other days could be very quiet if we sat in the clinic waiting for people to come to us to get measured. Volunteers should also be aware that things don’t always happen that fast and it can be hard to see progress in only four weeks, so try to stay longer if you can.
Also, people in the poor areas can be very friendly! A local woman that another volunteer and I worked with for a few weeks invited us to her family’s picnic. She and her husband cooked and a lot of her family came — it was really lovely. I found my volunteering in Rio a rich and unforgettable experience.

24、When tennis player Sam Bencheghib recognized the way the oceans in his home country, Indonesia, were polluted, in 2009 he and his older brother, Gary, co-founded Make a Change World, an organization supporting sustainability(可持续性) as well as helping to cut plastic(塑料) pollution. The company shares short videos encouraging eco-friendly actions.
Bencheghib has worked on several projects overseas. But he wanted to do something in the United States on his own. In January, Bencheghib came up with the idea to run from Los Angeles to New York, to make people pay attention to plastic pollution and its influence on oceans. Starting on June 8, Bencheghib has kept running 20 miles a day for 140 days. Along the way, he plans to host education speeches at schools, universities and town halls as well as organize street and city cleanups to influence people.
Bencheghib said he understands the difficulty of his task but recognizes that taking risks often has advantages. Unsurprisingly, when he told his team and coaches about his plan, he was met with surprise.
“We were all really excited but couldn’t believe it,” teammate Christopher Auteri said. “It’s crazy how long it is, but we know if there’s anyone who’s going to do it, it’s going to be Sam.”
Since Bencheghib broke the news to the team, there have been no plastic water bottles in the locker room, and teammates join Bencheghib on training runs. Coach Wouter Hendrix said Bencheghib’s work shows his persistence(坚持) and courage, which he believes will serve as invaluable qualities for completing his run.
