  • 22、A recent Stanford study found that America's students are shockingly bad at telling fact from fiction in this digital age. It's apparent that something has to change in the nation's classrooms. That something, according to Professor Sam Wineburg, one of those Stanford researchers, is “practice.”

“How do they become prepared to make the choices about what to believe, what to forward, what to post to their friends,” Wineburg asked on NPR's All Things Considered, “when teachers give no practice to them?”

Patricia Hunt, an experienced teacher at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., is doing something she has never done before: helping to pilot a new, digital course called the checkology virtual classroom. It comes from the nonprofit The News Literacy Project.

Hunt's students, most of them seniors, work in threes or fours. They're presented with a series of stories that are rapidly and broadly spread via the Internet. Some are false information. Some are ads. And some are pure fact.

“We don't know which is which at this point,” laughs student Kahder Smith. “We actually have to sit down, take our time, and actually read them. And probably Google some stuff to see if it's real or not.”

A post claims that more than a dozen people died after receiving the flu vaccine (疫苗) in Italy and that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is now telling people not to get a flu shot.

“I mean, I've heard many unconfirmed reports that the flu shot's bad for you,” student Autumn Cooper says. But instinct (直觉) tells her the story's wrong. “It just doesn't look like a reliable source. It looks like this is off Facebook and someone shared it.” Cooper labels the story “fiction”. And she's right.

Instead of teaching students the fundamentals(基本) of factchecking, many schools simply ignore the problem, blocking social media sites on school computers.

“It's like teaching students to drive in the parking lot and then sending them out on the highway and saying ‘Good luck!’” says Audrey Church, president of the American Association of School Librarians.

【1】What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Stanford researchers.

    B.Media people.

    C.Teachers.

    D.Students.

【2】How does Hunt run the digital course?

A.By letting students identify factual information in groups.

B.By taking students to a news organization regularly.

C.By asking students to go on the Internet together.

D.By inviting experts to give students lectures.

【3】According to Church, what should schools do?

    A.Help students improve driving skills.

B.Teach students how to spot false news.

C.Allow students to drive on the highway.

D.Ask students to avoid using social media.

【4】What does the text mainly discuss?

A.An educational issue in the digital age.

B.The findings of a recent Stanford study.

C.The influence of a widely spread post.

    D.An experienced high school teacher.

  • 23、The world has faced a food crisis of unprecedented(前所未有的) proportions in 2022—the largest in modern history, as conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis and rising costs have combined to pose great risks for hungry people across the world. As many as 828 million people go to bed hungry every night. The number of those facing acute food insecurity has risen from 135 million to 345 million since 2019. A total of 49 million people in 49 countries are suffering hunger, according to figures from the United Nations’ World Food Programme.

“We are facing an unprecedented global food crisis and all signs suggest we have not yet seen the worst. For the last three years, hunger numbers have repeatedly hit new peaks,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley said. He warned that things can and will get worse unless there is a large-scale and coordinated(协调一致的) effort to address the causes of this crisis.

There are many reasons for prevailing high levels of food insecurity. These reasons include conflicts, climate changes and weather extremes, economic slowdowns and downturns. In addition, these drivers often do not act alone. For instance, conflicts are often accompanied by economic downturns, which affect livelihoods and the ability of people to earn resources, leading to increasing poverty levels and higher prevalence(流行) of food insecurity.

Unfortunately, the main reasons for high levels of food insecurity have not improved this year. People in the Horn of Africa are facing a fifth consecutive(连续的) failed rain season in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, which will constrain their production, and is likely to push many people deeper into food insecurity.

Moreover, there is uncertainty about the weather. And climatic shock affecting any major producer or exporter will introduce additional uncertainty into production and consequently prices, which in turn impact the ability to purchase food, particularly of the most vulnerable people.

【1】How does the author lead in the topic?

    A.By making a comparison.

    B.By sharing personal experience.

    C.By giving opinions with evidence.

D.By listing facts and accurate figures.

【2】What can we know from David Beasley’s words?

A.This global food crisis won’t last longer.

B.It’s certain that the global food crisis will get worse.

C.We need to work together to deal with the global food crisis.

D.There will be another new peak of hunger numbers in three years.

【3】What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Characters.

    B.Operators.

    C.Factors.

    D.Activities.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.The Issue of Food Safety

    B.The Unprecedented Food Crisis

    C.Conflicts Causing Food Shortage

D.Efforts Put into the Study of Food Insecurity

  • 24、Children grow quickly, especially their feet, but many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites(寄生虫) from the soil.

An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids—a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

“It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed(压缩的) rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.” The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya.“...and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?”

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. “I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that.” Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. “I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for a little over five years.”

1Which of the following is the characteristic of the newly invented shoes?

    A. They are more expensive.   B. They are not so comfortable.

    C. They can grow with a child.   D. They come in different sizes.

2Who is this kind of newly invented shoes intended for?

    A. All the teenagers.   B. Children aged 4 to 14.

    C. Middle-aged women in Africa.   D. Senior citizens with low income.

3Why does Kenton Lee keep a pair of his own shoes in the office?

    A. To remind him of his promise.   B. To copy the design of them.

    C. To get a change conveniently.   D. To use them as an example.
