二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The Native American of northern California were highly skilled at basketry, using the reeds, graeses, barks, and roots they found around them to fashion articles of all sorts and sizes-not only trays, containers, and cooking pots, but hats, boats, fish traps, baby carriers, and ceremonial objects.

Of all these experts, none excelled the Pomo-a group who lived on or near the coast during the 1800's, and whose descendants continue to live in parts of the same region to this day. They made baskets three feet in diameter and others no bigger than a thimble (顶针). The Pomo people were masters of decoration. Some of their baskets were completely covered with shell pendants;others with feathers that made the baskets’ surfaces as soft as the breasts of birds. Moreover, the Pomo people made use of more weaving techniques than did their neighbors. Most groups made al their basketwork by twining--the twisting of a flexible horizontal material, called a weft, around stiffer vertical strands of material, the warp. Others depended primarily on coiling-a process in which a continuous coil of stiff material is held in the desired shape with tight wrapping of flexible strands. Only the Pomo people used both processes with equal ease and frequency. In addition, they made use of four distinct variations on the basic twining process, often employing more than one of them in a single article.

Although a wide variety of materials was available, the Pomo people used only a few. The warp was always made of willow, and the most commonly used weft was sedge root, a woody fiber that could easily be separated into strands no thicker than a thread. For color, the Pomo people used the bark of red-bud for their twined work and dyed bullrush root for black in coiled work. Though other materials were sometimes used, these four were the staples in their finest basketry.

If the basketry materials used by the Pomo people were limited, the designs were amazingly varied. Every Pomo basket maker knew how to produce from fifteen to twenty distinct patterns that could be combined in a number of different.

  • 22、Do you know the amazing fact that earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)? However, for many of us, seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.

Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.

A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts. Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.

The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant, a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid(咖啡酸) is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入) enzymes (酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco (烟草) plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.

This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.

【1】How can people rapidly analyze a decorative flower’s health condition?

    A.By checking its glow.

    B.By making it greener.

C.By testing the chemicals in it.

D.By putting it in the living room.

【2】What can we infer about the adapted glowing plants from the text?

    A.They may replace lamps.

B.They will be present on the market.

C.They can light up a whole living room.

D.They glow less bright than previous efforts.

【3】What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?

A.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.

B.They made it give out brighter light.

C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm.

D.They inserted caffeic acid into it.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Potential risk from glowing plants.

B.Strengths of integrating specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.

C.Bad impacts of continuous light production on the glowing plants.

D.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.

  • 23、   Nearly seven years ago, I hitchhiked(搭顺风车)across Canada. It was a curious experience, but probably not what people imagine. Frankly, it was rather boring. But it gave me some understanding of the complexities of humans.

The contrast between boredom and excitement on the road is quite striking. For hours on end, you may be standing at the side of a highway, watching faces go by. You get all sorts of looks when you're hitchhiking. People ignore you, smile at you, wave or use their hands to gesture that they're unable to pick you up. Often, truckers pick you up.

Once, I was dropped off in front of an elderly woman. She said her car had broken down and that her husband was on his way with a tow truck(拖车). Later, she and her husband offered to bring me back to their place for lunch. I happily agreed. The woman sat in the middle seat of the tow truck and I sat in the passenger seat. Our communication became a funny event of translations. I could not figure out what her husband was saying. He spoke English, but his dialect made it almost impossible for me to understand. Every time he spoke to me, I'd have to say, "I'm sorry, what did you say?" Then his wife would step in to translate.

When I explained I was hitchhiking coast-to-coast for fun, they were both amazed and impressed. Then, a look of understanding appeared on the woman's face. “Oh!" she said. “You remind me of that guy, what's his name…" She thought hard for a couple of minutes, then: “Terry Fox!”

The flow of randomness(随机)and the constant impermanence(无常)was what I enjoyed about hitchhiking. We have non-stop social interactions that are deeply authentic but so finite only in a short time. A person becomes an important part of our life for an hour or two and then he or she disappears. The beauty of strangers being so open about their lives never gets old and they paint a picture of harmony in this country.

【1】What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 2?

    A.Truckers aren't willing to pick up passers-by.

B.Hitchhikers tend to be looked down upon.

    C.Waiting for a lift isn't always a pleasant experience.

D.People gesture to hitchhikers in the same way.

【2】How was the communication between the author and the tow trucker?

    A.It went smoothly.

    B.It was difficult.

    C.It sounded ridiculous.

    D.It was boring.

【3】What can we infer about "Terry Fox"?

    A.He was a young trucker.

    B.He hitchhiked for travelling.

    C.He often helped hitchhikers.

    D.He looked like the author.

【4】What does the underlined word "finite" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Limited.

    B.Independent.

    C.Different.

    D.Disturbing.

  • 24、Everyone’s different. We all have different parents, different upbringings and different values. However, we also need to be around and work with other people to function in society. 【1】.

    Active Listening

Although speaking is the first action that comes to mind when one hears the word “communication”, it’s actually just half of the equation. Equally important is listening. Rather than passively listening and just letting information flow at you, listen actively. 【2】. When you do interrupt, do so at a pause and only to paraphrase(释义)to clarify what the person is saying.

    Body Language

Keep your body open. Don’t cross your arms or legs, but keep both outstretched, indicating receptiveness.

    Empathy(共鸣)and Personal Responsibility

Show empathy and take responsibility. 【3】. One of the best ways to do the former is to use the paraphrasing strategy mentioned above. Taking responsibility relies on one word: “I” Never use “you” when discussing something negative.

    【4】

You need to use enough words to get your point across. You also need to save time so that your point isn’t lost or muddled in a sea of unnecessary words. Clarity is so important in effectively communicating that it deserves its own section.

    Comfort

【5】, don’t try to find out the cause of or a solution to the anger until he has calmed down. People usually just need to be heard out when they5re angry, so let them talk, only speaking to give comfort. A resolution can be pursued later.

    A.Clarity

    B.If someone is angry

    C.Effective communication

D.Although his message is the same

E.The key to bridging this gap is effective communication

F.Relax your body, maintain eye contact and keep interruptions to a minimum

G.The person you’re speaking to needs to feel that you understand what he means

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but two sons. Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 16 years old. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper, Ann, with Thomas and Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boys to look_after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her two sons not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim it, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

“If it hadn’t come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have not been saved,”Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her two sons. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.
