21、A robot the size of a large bulldozer (推土机) moves along the bottom of the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金属的) rock and soft mud. The stuff travels up a long pipe to a ship, where workers and machinery separate out the rock and throw the mud back into the ocean. This is a mining operation. The rock contains a mixture of metals, including ones called rare earth metals. People use these materials to make batteries and electronics like computers and phones.
Deep-sea mining hasn’t happened yet. But it probably will occur within the next decade. No country owns any part of the deep sea. So an organization called the International Seabed Authority (ISA) decides who is allowed to mine there. The ISA has allowed 29 organizations to explore the deep sea and make plans for mining. One company plans to begin mining in the year 2027.
Scientists and environmentalists, though, warn that mining could destroy deep-sea ecosystem. In 1989, ecologist Hjalmar Thiel carried out a test. His team searched the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean, in a spot with lots of the metallic rocks that miners want. They didn’t actually collect any of the rocks. But they disturbed the mud, just as a mining operation would. The plume (飘升之物) of mud fell back down over the ocean floor burying creatures living there. As of 2015, the area they disturbed had not recovered. Signs of the search are still there. Sponges (海绵动物), corals, and other animals have not moved back in. That means mining could have harmful, long-lasting consequences for deep ocean life. Scientists want to understand the deep sea better before disturbing it.
Leaving the deep sea alone sounds great, but people need those metals. “Mines on land are soon going to run out,” geologist Steven Scott of the University of Toronto told Smithsonian Magazine, “Every electronic device in the world has rare earth metals in it…we need raw resources.” New energy technologies including solar and wind power and electric cars, rely on these metals as well. We may need to mine them from the sea in order to switch to greener energy sources.
【1】Why is a deep-sea mining operation carried out?
A.To test the function of the underwater robot.
B.To separate the rock from the mud.
C.To obtain rare earth metals.
D.To study the elements of the deep-sea mud.
【2】What can we learn about ISA according to the passage?
A.It possesses the ownership of the whole deep sea.
B.It may help the deep-sea exploration carried out scientifically.
C.It can make the deep-sea natural resources shared fairly.
D.It works out mining plans for different countries.
【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.People depend on rare earth metals for car production.
B.We mustn’t mine anything from the deep sea.
C.Deep-sea resources will replace those on land.
D.Rare earth metals help us develop green energy.
22、Ask yourself, “Why do you work so hard? What motivates you to do so?” Most of you may say a single word to answer both the questions: Family.
All of us inherit our physical features from our parents. However, when you start interacting with the outside world, you realize that they are not enough to ensure your success, not even your survival. It is the values passed on to you by your family such as patience, care, understanding and commitment that make your survival and growth possible.
You may or may not be aware, but your family was the first school you entered. “Survival of the fittest” is the golden rule in this world. In other words, “Let the unfit perish” is the motto. When you stepped into this world, you were unfit to survive on your own. From the first day you came into the world, you started learning about love, care and family relationships at home. For example, by observing your family members, you learned how family relationships work. As time went on, you matured and started taking note of other people outside your family and how your family members interacted with them. You also noticed how your family dealt with the ups and downs of life.
What you learned from your family becomes your value system and forms your perceptions and basis of actions. A person is known by his actions. It is your family that gave you an identity. Whenever you move from one place to another, you carry your family history with you. Have you ever noticed that your opinions always confirmed to the values you acquired from your family?
Every person’s relation to his family is similar to the earth’s relation to its environment, which acts as a protective layer. For a person, the importance of family is beyond calculation. The saying goes that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. Spend your life showing those you love that they will always be family no matter what happens.
【1】Your family can help you survive by________.
A.providing more love for you

D.improving your school education
【2】According to the passage, a person represents________.
A.the unity of his family
B.his family benefits
C.the behavior pattern of his family
D.his family relationships with others
【3】Like the environment to the earth, a family________.
A.is an interactive system
B.encourages its members to work hard
C.is full of challenges
D.provides security for its members
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The development of a person.
B.The importance of family.
C.How to survive the hardship?
D.What’s a family?
23、It was a secret Eli kept until he was 8 years old.
“He would scream, like we were hurting him when we tried to put a dress on him.” recalled Grace, his mother. That was when Eli was an 18-month-old baby girl already rejecting anything female.
Now, Eli’s mother and Eli are sharing their story with CBS New York. Eli still remembers being a baby, and rejecting putting on a dress. “Oh, I remember that,” he said. “It was like torture.” Now Eli is 11 years old. He is, by all accounts, a happy, active boy who never doubted he was born the wrong sex. Eli said to CBS New York. It was hard to keep that secret for 8 years though, “It was kind of hard because I hadn’t really told anyone ever,” he said.
“He said, ‘I have a secret, and the secret is I don’t want to be a girl. I think I’m a boy,’”Grace recalled. “…I thought, ‘I don’t know what we’re going to do, but we’re going to figure it out.”’
CBS New York reports that it was a less clear path for Ryan, now a 21-year-old man. He, too, was born female, but never felt like one.
He didn’t understand his feelings at the time. Then he learned about what it meant to be transgender on the Internet, and it began to make sense. “It was a relief to know what exactly I was or am,” he said.
Ryan’s mother said at first it was hard to accept. “It’s a scary thing to think about,” she said. But she came around. “I was glad my son is able to become the person he needed to be,” she said.
Experts say the kind of family support both Ryan and Eli are getting is of great significance. Without it, many transgender kids suffer from anxiety, depression and high rates of suicide.
“We see a lot of kids with a lot of mental health concerns, and we also see that those mental health concerns really reduced when the family is on board,” said Jean Malpas of Ackerman Institute for the Family, a non-profit research organization to CBS New York.
Grace said for her it went from a situation that felt really confusing and difficult to one that she now celebrates. “We feel so lucky to have him.” she said.

24、As you are probably aware, the latest job markets news isn’t good: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think. That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job staff-turnover(人员流动)data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations(辞职), and retirements. (Yes, people are retiring even in this economy.)In both good times and bad, staff-turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2014, when the economy was still booming along, job growth was only 132,000, while staff-turn over was 4.7 million!
And as it turns out, even today—with job growth near zero—over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.
I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher. It would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from(and compete for). And it's true that there are currently more people applying for each available job opening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.
But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look;learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that 2.7 million people who wanted and were available for work hadn’t hunted for it within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed.
So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up.Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.

A. It increases people’s confidence in the economy.
B. It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.
C. It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.
D. It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.
【3】What is the key to finding a job according to the author?
A. Education B. Intelligence
C. Experience D. Persistence
【4】What do we learn about The Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment data?
A. They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.
B. They don’t include those who have stopped looking for a job.
C. They provide the public with the latest information.
D. They warn of the structural problems in the economy.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.
“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.
When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.
It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.
