二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A good conversation should proceed like a tennis match: players each take turns responding, knowing instinctively (本能) when to speak and when to listen. This kind of complicated and back-and-forth talk is often considered to be possessed only by humans. However, according to a recent study, animals also seem to know when to speak and when to listen.

The study involved over 300 animals including birds, mammals (哺乳动物), insects, and frogs which practice turn-taking behavior. These animals alternate their call and response in a similar way humans communicate. Monkeys, for example, often exchange calls to locate each other in the wild and figure out whether they know one another.

While forms of communication are mostly sound-based, several species have more creative forms of viewable communication. Baby monkeys let their parents know they want to be carried with arm gestures, while birds, insects and frogs can get their messages across through colorful displays.

Kobin Kendrick, the main co-author on the study, says that making comparisons among animals that take tums when communicating can give us a better understanding of how this feature evolved in humans and our ancestors. “We know very little about the evolution and origin of the human language, so any possibility of gaining insight into it is worth going after,” he says.

Additionally, while the idea of turn-taking might bring to mind a picture of orderly, well-mannered animals, Kendrick stresses that this isn’t always the case. Owl (猫头鹰) chicks may try to outdo each other by making louder sounds in an effort to attract favor from their mothers during feeding. “This can be seen as an exception to the rule, highlighting the importance of turn-taking in general,” says Kendrick.

One problem with the study is that researchers themselves don’t know how to communicate with others outside their particular species of interest. Kendrick stresses another goal of the study is to create a wider framework that can bring together all the different researches on turn-taking, allowing scientists to conduct more cross-species comparisons. “We all believe strongly these fields can benefit from each other, and we hope the study will drive more crosstalk between humans and animals in the future,” says Kendrick.

【1】What can we learn about the turn-taking behavior?

A.It is a unique human quality.

B.It is an acquired athletic skill.

    C.It occurs between familiar relations.

    D.It features complexity and interaction.

【2】Which of the following is a form of visual intercommunication?

    A.Frogs show skin colors.

    B.Bees release smells.

    C.Eagles scream in the sky.

    D.Monkeys exchange calls.

【3】Why are “owl chicks” mentioned in paragraph 5?

    A.To propose a definition.

    B.To give a contrast.

    C.To present an argument.

    D.To make a prediction.

【4】What aspect of research does the last paragraph highlight?

    A.Research budget.

    B.Research range.

    C.Research frequency.

    D.Research background.

  • 22、The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

1In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to______.

    A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

    B. have their sleep patterns observed all night

    C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

    D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial

2The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to____________.

    A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

    B. fall asleep more easily after reading

    C. become less energetic the next morning

    D. have a lot more melatonin secretion

3The special software recently developed can______.

    A. remove the blue light from your devices completely

    B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

    C. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

    D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. No e-reading in bed before sleep

    B. New software for night e-readers

    C. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

    D. No games on iPad in bed

  • 24、Saturn (土星) is famous for its lovely rings, but a new study suggests the planet has spent most of its 4.5 billion years without them. That’s because the rings are likely only 10 million to 100million years old, according to a newly published report in the journal Science that’s based on findings from NASA’s Cassini probe (探测器).

Cassini spent some 13 years orbiting Saturn before diving and impacting into its atmosphere. During its final orbits, the spacecraft dove between the planet and its rings. That let scientists measure the gravitational effect of the rings and get a good estimate of the ring material's mass. What they found is that it’s only about 40 percent of the mass of Saturn’s moon Mimas. This small mass suggests that the rings are relatively young.

“There’s no huge amount of massive material hidden in the rings that we can’t see,” says Philip Nicholoson, a planetary scientist,“The rings are almost pure ice.” He says the relative youthfulness of Satum’s ring system is something that scientists have come to suspect only recently. “It was easier to believe that it formed at the same time as Saturn and its satellites did,” Nicholson says. “It’s hard to understand how they could have formed that recently.” It’s possible that the rings are the remains of a comet (彗星) or some other icy object that made a chance encounter with Saturn and got torn up, he says. Or, perhaps one of Saturn’s icy moons got whacked by an impact with a large comet.

Whatever happened, it’s looking more and more likely that Saturn’s splendid rings are a temporary phenomenon that humans are lucky to get to see at all. Previous measurements from Cassini helped show that the rings may be disappearing at a rapid speed, as dusty ice particles (颗粒) get pulled down to Saturn by its gravity. In another 100 million years, Saturn’s most unique feature might be gone.

【1】How did scientists estimate the ring material’s mass?

A.By analyzing the age of the rings.

    B.By timing Cassini’s orbiting Saturn.

    C.By recording Cassini’s flying speed.

D.By measuring the gravitational effect of the rings.

【2】What's the previous common understanding of Saturn’s rings?

A.They are made up of pure ice.

B.They are the remains of a comet.

C.They came into being when Saturn formed.

D.They are a natural phenomenon of all planets.

【3】What does the underlined word “whacked” in the third paragraph mean?

    A.Crashed.

    B.Separated.

    C.Absorbed.

    D.Pulled.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
