  • 21、Lake Baikal, the biggest body of fresh water on Earth near Russia’s border with Mongolia, is home to several unusual animals, including the world’s only species of freshwater seal.

Seals exist in large quantities in Baikal, about 100,000 of them, though the lake is poor in nutrition.【1】. A study just published by Watanabe Yuuki of the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo suggests the answer is tiny organisms.

Most seals eat fish. And Baikal seals do, indeed, have needle-pointed teeth. But in 1982 researchers noted that they develop a second sort of specialized tooth behind those canines. They have sharp teeth which look like combs.【2】But Dr Watanabe guessed that they might be an adaptation for feeding on other strange creatures in the lake.

Seals arrived in Baikal 2 m years ago, from the Arctic Ocean. So too did some much smaller sea creatures, known as amphipods. These have grown into more than 340 species.【3】. But Dr Watanabe wondered if the Baikal seals’ comb-like teeth might enable them to filter these tiny creatures from the water in sufficient quantities to make them useful food sources.【4】.

Records showed that the seals would dive in with their mouths open and collect amphipod groups that form at night. Dr Watanabe estimates that each seal catch an average of 57 amphipods per dive.【5】, for the seals do hunt fish as well. But they also compete with those fish for the amphipods, thus partially bypassing a link in the food chain and perhaps maintaining themselves in larger numbers than would otherwise be possible.

    A.The needlelike canines are necessary

B.So how they do so well has been a puzzle

C.This has led to their numbers increasing sharply

D.At the time, nobody knew what to make of them

E.He therefore used waterproof cameras to observe a few seals

F.Cameras remained attached to some seals for between two and four days

G.Sea mammals the size of seals would normally see amphipods as too small to hunt

  • 22、Summertime is often filled with outdoor parties and food trucks, meaning you’re spending more time standing up and eating. But if you want to actually enjoy your meal, researchers say you’re better off finding a seat.

A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Research finds posture impacts taste perception (感知), with food tasting better when you’re sitting down. Dpayan Biswas, professor of marketing at the University of South Florida, found that holding a standing posture for even a few minutes leads to physical stress, muting taste perception. The force of gravity pushes blood to the lower parts of the body, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood back up to the top of the body, accelerating heart rate. When people experience discomfort, foods that normally taste good do not appear as pleasant to the tongue. Biswas confirmed his assumption by having 350 participants rate the taste of a pita chip. Those who were standing gave it a less favorable rating than those who were sitting in a chair.

Researchers then provided participants classic bite sized cakes baked at a local restaurant that were tested and widely considered pleasant tasting. Those who were sitting down rated them to be most delicious. However, when the baker changed the recipe and made the taste unpleasant by adding an extra cup of salt, the results were opposite. Participants standing up didn’t notice the cakes tasting saltier to that extent, and actually rated them to have a relatively more favorable taste perception than those who sampled them while sitting down.

“This finding suggests that parents might be able to make unpleasant-tasting, healthy foods seem more delicious to reluctant (不情愿的) children by having them eat standing up (vs. sitting down). Also it might be beneficial to maintain a standing posture when consuming medical products that have unpleasant tastes.”

In addition, the team tested posture’s impact on temperature perception. Participants were provided cups of hot coffee. Those standing up reported it not being as intense as those who were sitting down. However, they drank less than those sitting, suggesting physical stress suppresses appetite. Eating while standing can also help with long-term weight loss goals. Specifically, eating while standing (vs. sitting) leads to lower amount of consumption.

【1】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Summer is the best season to enjoy tasty food.

  • 24、Benjamin Alexander, a 38-year-old man from Northampton shire, became the first athlete to represent Jamaica in an alpine skiing event (高山滑雪) at the Winter Olympics.

But his story started in 2015. When he saw friends did the sport so skillfully, he was in awe and decided to take a ski lesson.” That first time, I fell 27 times on the way down the hill. I think a lot of people would have given up at that point.” “But I kind of just took that as the baseline. If I can aim for falling less than 27 times on the next hill, then I am progressing.”

However, it wasn’t until two years later that Benjamin considered seriously competing in the sport. “In 2018, I went to the Winter Olympics as a spectator,” he said. “I noticed that there were only three athletes representing Jamaica. I found that very strange since my mother country is a powerhouse full of athletes in the summer game. So coming into 2019, I just had a plan to say, ‘Let’s see if this crazy idea of going to the Olympics is even possible. Let’s just go and ski for a little while and see what happens.’” he said.

Alexander has no full-time coach. He built a support network that included Stokes and the US skier Gordon Gray, who called Alexander’s technique “terrible” but thought his lack of fear would give him an advantage in competition. A strategic approach and fearless technique have led the engineering graduate and former DJ not only to make sporting history but find success as a black athlete in a historically white sport. Alexander bills himself as a “reinvention expert” and has used skills learned in his other careers to develop his pursuit of skiing success. “I’ve been to 67 countries. I’ve spent a lot of my life on the road.” he said. “I’ve always loved to travel and a big part of my previous role as a DJ was getting myself out there, marketing myself in the right way, figuring out ways to get into venues, clubs and festivals that I wanted to perform at.”

【1】What made Benjamin decide to compete in Olympics?

    A.His love for his motherland.

    B.His friends’ encouragement.

C.His desire to change his life.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A few years ago, my mom went to the doctor to ask him about her neck, which had been a little bigger than usual. It turned out there was something wrong with her lymph glands, and soon they scheduled Mom to have a biopsy on the seventh of September.

As soon as I found out, I was very angry, as September 7 is my birthday. They had promised to take me to see a spider-man movie and had a picnic in the yard. I shouted at her and everyone else, too. I even shouted at the dog. I started begging her to reschedule the biopsy. She gave me this look like she was about to cry and said, “I've done everything I can. I've got a disease. Could you forgive me?” Finally, I just shouted, “I hate you!” and ran into my room, crying. I sat on my bed thinking—Why do things always have to happen to me? Everyone gets diseases Why couldn't mum just go to hospital another day?

For the next couple of weeks I remained silently angry. Deep down I knew I shouldn't act that way, but I did anyway. Anyone could see how sad I was making my mom. I knew it wasn't her fault, but I had to have someone to blame.

Finally, my birthday came. My parents left early in the morning for the hospital, and I was sent to our neighbor's house. No spider-man movie, no birthday present, and no picnic. Though I was taken good care of, I was not having a good time. “This isn't fair,” I thought. “This was supposed to be my day.”

My parents came home late that night. Mom walked in with a bandage on her neck She sat down and rested her head on my dad's shoulder. It hurt so badly that it was difficult for her to talk.

Later that night, Mom asked me to get into her room and she pulled out a box.
