  • 22、As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.

There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.

A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.

Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.

The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.

The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.

【1】Why does the author mention his childhood experience?

A.To show how his character changed.

B.To explain what he was like when he was young.

C.To show an example of why people are shy of communication.

    A.Careless.

    B.Baseless.

    C.Selfless.

    D.Meaningless.

【3】What do we know about the liking gap from the text?

A.It indicates what strangers really think of us.

B.It begins and ends quickly among strangers.

C.It disappears when strangers get to know each other.

D.It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for this text?

A.People Like You More than You Know

B.How to Get Along Well with Strangers

C.The Way to Know What Others Think of Us

  • 23、My son just turned 14 and does not have a smartphone. When he graduated from Grade 8, he was the only kid in his class without one. He asks for a phone now that he’s going to high school. I say no, he asks why, I explain, and he pushes back.

“You can choose to do things differently when you’re a parent,” I told him. But sometimes, I wonder if I’m being too stubborn or unfair.

The more I research, the more confident I feel in my decision. Many studies link the current mental health crisis among adolescents to fundamental changes in how they socialize, namely, the shift from in-person to online interaction.

But other mothers challenge my view. “He must feel so left out!” Then there are the parents who tell me sadly that they wish they had delayed their teenager’s phone ownership longer than they did. They urge me to hold out.

If teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are truly spending an average of 8 hours 39 minutes per day on their devices, as stated in a survey conducted by Common Sense Media, then what are they not doing? Kids absorbed in their devices are missing out on real life, and that strikes me as really sad.

I want my son to have a childhood he feels satisfied with and proud of. I want it to be full of adventures, imaginative play and physical challenges which he must sort out himself without asking me for help. The easiest and simplest way to achieve these goals is to delay giving him a smartphone.

Some think my son is missing out or falling behind, but he is not. He does well in school and extra-curricular activities, hangs out with his friends in person, and moves independently around our small town. He promises he’ll give his own 14-year-old a phone someday, and I tell him that’s fine. But recently, he admitted that he missed the beautiful scenery on a drive to a nearby mountain because he had been so absorbed in his friend’s iPad. If that is his version of admitting I’m right, I’ll take it.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “pushes back” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Agrees.

    B.Delays.

    C.Opposes.

    D.Persuades.

【2】What is the author primarily concerned about regarding giving her son a phone?

    A.Her son’s online safety.

    B.Her son’s mental growth.

    C.Her son’s reduced physical activities.

    D.Her son’s poor academic performance.

【3】What quality does the author want her son to develop in his childhood?

    A.Team spirit.

    B.Leadership.

    D.Critical thinking.

    A.He is falling behind academically.

C.He has given up his desire for a smartphone.

D.He has realized the problems of much screen time.

  • 24、You know eating fruit and vegetables does good. But do you know it can also make you look good? People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found. Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look healthier and an extra 3.3 portion could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.

Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids (类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange ,it was not known a small increase was perceptible(被觉察)to others - and was seen as appealing.

A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three weeks. Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)-which gives tomatoes and  red peppers their red colour - and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.

【1】What do we know from the research?

    A. If you take in a little more fruit and vegetables, you will obviously look more attractive in three weeks.

    B. The researchers took the pictures of the 35 people in the research at different stages.

    C. Increasing your intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day can greatly improve your health.

    D. People who increased their intake of greens by 3.3 portions a day were found the most attractive after six weeks.

2Which of the following is NOT the function of carotenoids?

    A. They can protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays.

    B. They can prevent heart disease and cancer.

    C. They can prevent age-related diseases.

    D. They can keep you in good health.

3Which of the statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

    A. We've already known eating extreme amounts of carrots can turn skin orange.

    B. We knew in the past that eating a few more carrots could make us look appealing.

    C. The research showed the improvement in skin is linked with the levels of carotenoids in it

    D. Among hundreds of carotenoids, lycopene is thought to have the most dramatic effect on the skin.

4We can infer from the passage that _____

    A. Skin's redness, yellowness and lightness make a person look more healthy and attractive.

    B. Carotenoids have the same effect as lycopene.

    C. It is carotenoids that give tomatoes and red peppers their red colour.

    D. Both beta-carotene and polyphenols affect skin colour by causing blood rush to the skin surface.

5Which can be the best title of the passage?

    A. Eating fruit and vegetables does good .

    B. Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids.

    C. How to become attractive.

    D. Eating fruit and vegetables makes you look good
