21、How to Build the Most Powerful Mindset for Success
In the past decade or so, you may have heard the term “growth mindset” thrown around a lot. But what is a growth mindset? How can we cultivate a growth mindset in ourselves? Here are a few ways you can start training your brain to think with a growth mindset instead of a fixed one:
1. Stop worrying about if you’re smart enough, start worrying if you’re working hard enough.
As Dr. Carol Dwek, an American psychologist, explains: “Genius is not enough; we need to get the job done.” 【1】 To cultivate a growth mindset, stop judging your worth based on how smart you perceive yourself to be and start focusing on trying your best.
2. 【2】
People with fixed mindsets often see failures as reflections of their own intelligence or skill, so they end up giving up when confronted with disappointment. But instead of seeing failure as a negative thing, reframe it as an opportunity to learn something. If this set of actions resulted in failure, how could you change things next time to result in success?
3. Reframe setbacks as part of the process.
Similarly, it’s important to remember that setbacks, failures, frustrations, disappointments, etc. are 100% natural. How many times did Edison try to make a light-bulb? How many setbacks did Oprah Winfrey face on her journey to fame?【3】 Learn from it, appreciate it, then move on.
4. Praise effort rather than outcomes.
In Dr. Dwek’s book, she writes: “after seven experiments with hundreds of children, we had some of the clearest findings I’ve ever seen: Praising children’s intelligence harms their motivation and it harms their performance.” How can that be? Praise does give them a boost, a special glow - but only for the moment. The minute they hit a snag, their confidence goes out the window and their motivation hits rock bottom. It’s important to remember that praising your intelligence and talent won’t help you grow and learn. 【4】
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
One trait that people with growth mindsets often exhibit is the ability to ask questions. Rather than worrying about how others will perceive your intelligence when asking a question, they focus on trying your best to learn and grow. 【5】 So reach out when you need help. Ask questions when you don’t know. That is where real intelligence is formed.
A.But if you’re currently stuck in a fixed mindset, this might be hard to believe right away.
B.You obviously can’t be expected to know everything or to do everything on your own.
C.The most important thing is whether you put in your best effort.
D.A setback or failure is not something to be ashamed of, but embraced.
E.Reframe failures as learning opportunities.
F.Even if you congratulate yourself, you may end up hurting long term.
G.Instead, praise hard work and persistence to encourage improvement.
22、The US plans to extend its endangered species protection to lions in Africa. US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) will classify lions in southern and eastern Africa as threatened. The move will place tighter restrictions on the import of lion “trophies(纪念品)”, such as paws or heads.
While the US cannot regulate hunting in other countries the move is significant because around half of all lion hunting in Africa is conducted by Americans. According to FWS data, more than 5, 600 lions have been killed and imported by American hunters over the past decade.
Under the new FWS rules, bringing lion parts to the US will be banned(禁止) in most circumstances if the animal is from a country where lions are endangered. Hunters will have to show the trophies were “legally obtained” from countries that have a scientifically sound management program that benefits the subspecies in the wild.
This regulation is expected to place a far greater burden of proof upon hunters who claim that the money from lion hunting has been used to help communities in Africa and the overall conservation of lions. The persistent downward trend in lion numbers, due to habitat loss and hunting by locals and foreign tourists, suggests there has been little conservation(保护) benefit from organized hunts.
An international study, published in September, found African lion numbers have decreased by half since 1993, with a further 50% decline expected over the next 20 years for populations in west, central and east Africa.
“The lion is one of the planet’s most beloved species and an irreplaceable part of our shared global heritage,” said Dan Ashe, director of the FWS. “If we want to ensure that healthy lion populations continue to wander around the African savannas(大草原) and forests of India, it’s up to all of us—not just the people of Africa and India--to take action.”
【1】Why is the move of US significant?

B. That is due to habitat loss and hunting by locals and foreign tourists.

【2】Where do most of the lion hunters come from?
A. Southern Africa. B. America.
C. Eastern Africa. D. India.
【3】What may be the result of the move?
A. The import of lion parts will be strictly limited.
B. Lion-hunting will be illegal all over the world.
C. communities in Africa will benefit a lot.
D. Lion parts will never be legally obtained.
【4】What does Dan Ashe really want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Almost everybody loves lions.

24、Anyone who is addicted to reading bus tickets or cereal packets will understand the appeal of poems on the underground. Some years ago,a few acquaintances who lived and worked in London, who used the Tube and loved poetry, decided that it would be pleasant to read a few lines by their favorite poets as they traveled around by Tube, instead of just glancing upwards at the tiresome advertisements. The underground had a surplus (剩余的) of advertising space on the trains. They suggested filling the blank space on the trains, for the entertainment of the traveling public.
The poems took on a new life when they were removed from books and placed alongside the adverts. Commuters enjoyed the idea of reading Keats. “Much have I traveled in the realms of gold” on a crowded Central Line train,or trying to learn by heart a sonnet between Hammersmith and Piccadilly. The choice of poems wasn’t arbitrary (随机的) but specially chosen. It catered for (符合) all tastes including living and dead poems from the homeland and from all over the English speaking world, and especially poems which have association with London.
The success of the poems on the underground enterprises confirmed that Britain was a nation of poetry lovers. Hundreds of people corresponded with London Underground suggesting poems,or just to say thank you. In January 1989,on the third anniversary after the first poems on the Underground,London Underground promised to donate all the spaces free,to increase the number available (at least one poem in each train carriage),and to pay for the production costs as well. They also update the poems every few months. Posters of the poems decorated the British Council libraries throughout the world, but the best way to view the poems is to see them by yourselves,on whichever train you choose,in every zone of the network-for the price of an underground ticket.
