二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What’s So Funny?

In 1990, during a performance of my stage play, I kept focusing myself on one particular member of the audience. While everybody else laughed, there she sat, staring at the floor, with her fingers in her ears. I’ll never forget her look of discomfort. That woman was my mother. I wish I could say her reaction that evening was an incident, but it was one of many I remember when I was first starting out as a playwright.

Although I’d established myself as a humourist, my mother never found me or my work particularly funny. We loved each other deeply, of course, but she was my hardest critic. “Is Drew really that funny?” she’d ask family members. To make matters worse, the feeling was mutual (相互的): though our social circle swore that she was funny, I never saw it. How could she be funny? My mother was supposedly very funny in her first language, Anishinaabemowin, but I didn’t speak it. One of the characteristics of the language is that it is structured for maximum amusement.

For a while I was convinced I would never make her laugh. Then, in 2005, I succeeded. I had published a book called, Me Funny. In it were dozens of essays deconstructing (解构) the humour in Anishinaabemowin. They cracked her up so much that she looked at me and declared, “Wow, that was funny!” I remember being relieved and very pleased.

In 2009, my mother passed away. I was in charge of planning the funeral along with two cousins. Because my mother was a shy woman, I can guarantee she would have found our group effort quite embarrassing. During the funeral, amidst the tears, family member after family member got up and recounted things she had done and said over the years. To my surprise, I found myself laughing. More and more stories about her surfaced. We laughed as we remembered her.

I couldn’t see my mother’s forest for my own trees. I wish I could have shared those laughs with her while she was alive, but I’m glad I finally made the connection.

【1】The author’s mother didn’t laugh when watching his play because ________.

A.she wasn’t interested in stage plays

B.she felt uncomfortable at the theatre

    C.she couldn’t understand his humour

D.she had difficulty following the plot

【2】What finally helped the author understand his mother’s humour?

    A.The release of his book.

    B.The stories about his mother.

    C.The audience’s feedback.

    D.The social circle’s comments.

【3】What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

    A.To express his sorrow.

    B.To explain his humour.

    C.To show his achievements.

    D.To remember his mother.

  • 22、About the Scottish Portrait Gallery

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is one of Edinburgh’s most extraordinary buildings—a great red sandstone neo-gothic palace which sits proudly on the city’s skyline. Following a dramatic three-year redecoration, completed in December 2011, the Gallery now offers 17 new displays. Each of these explores different aspects of the story of Scotland and her people.

    The Building

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson as a holy palace for Scotland’s heroes and heroines. A detailed Arts and Crafts decorative scheme, both inside and outside, with its glittering friezes, evocative murals and extensive sculptural embellishment, makes it a very special visitor experience.

    The Collection

The Portrait Gallery’s collection is an exceptional national resource of over 30,000 fascinating images containing a rich variety of media and including many internationally outstanding works of art. The portraits depict(刻画) the men and women whose lives and achievements helped shape Scotland and the wider world. The Gallery is also home to the NGS’s outstanding collection of photographs which includes around 6,000 works by the early Scottish pioneers of the medium, Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill as well as new works by leading-edge contemporary photographers.

    Visitor Facilities

The new Portrait Gallery cafe serves a delicious menu of fresh dishes and classic recipes, using the very best local ingredients and seasonal produce. Our new shop offers a fresh twist on design-led gifts and souvenirs. The gallery now has all the facilities which today’s visitors expect, including a fantastic new lift, an Education suite and disabled access throughout the building.

  • 23、   Ernest Hemingway, like all writers, means different things to different people. To some,he represents a hunting, drinking, smoking, and aggressive male.To my high school mind,he was just some old white guy going on about a fisherman desperate to catch a large sea fish—though Ms.Frederieks,my English teacher, had forced us to read The Old Man and the Sea,I didn't come to appreciate it,nor any of Hemingway's books, until much later. But in my early 20s,someone mailed me a dusty copy of Hemingway's first novel,The Sun Also Rises.I'd never read anything quite like it—and haven't since.

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the publication of that book,A masterpiece of the form,The Sun Also Rises is a rare achievement in its power. Its brief yet evocative(引起共鸣的)sentences made a strong impression as I was beginning to develop my own love of words;“Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it?”one character asks narrator Jake,an American newspaper   reporter.“Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already?”

None of Hemingway's other works, though some were good and even great, quite expressed the idea of desire and longing that his first novel does. But there's also an obvious sadness that affects the entire novel, which,in truth,is what attracted me more than anything. How could these depressed and often insufferable characters be drawn so beautifully? And how on earth could such simple, undecorated writing carry this kind of emotional weight?Nathaniel Hawthorne says it best:"Easy reading is extremely hard writing."

But for me,it's much more than that. When I read? The Sun Also Rises-and I go back to it every few yeas-I'm instantly transported to Pamplona, where Hemingway's characters go to watch the bullfights.I visited Pamplona as a kid with my family, and I too watched the bullfights with my father—who randomly sent me this wonderful book.

1What did the author think of Hemingway when he way in high school?

    A.A puzzle B.A specialist. C.A legend. D.A passer-by.

2What do we know about The Sun Also Rises?

A.It is a best seller. B.It was published a century ago.

C.Its simple words are appealing. D.It's Hemingway's most popular novel.

3What can we infer about the author from the text?

A.He is crazy about travelling. B.He was greatly affected by the book

C.He attached importance to reading. D.He enjoyed looking back on old days.

4Which column is the passage possibly from?

    A.Review. B.News. C.Anecdote. D.History.

  • 24、The future of work

If you can get it, Robots may well take your job — eventually Pioneers are not always welcome. In 1589 William Lee made his way to the English queen, hoping to be granted a patent for his invention, a knitting (编织) machine. Queen Elizabeth I turned him down: “Consider what the invention could do to my poor people,” she commanded. “It would surely bring to them ruin by taking away their employment.”

The fears of Queen have echoed down the centuries. In the 21st century the concerns have switched to robots and artificial intelligence (AD); 30% of American workers believe their jobs are likely to be replaced by robots and computers in their lifetime.

Daniel Susskind has written about this issue before in “The Future of the Professions”, co-authored with his father, Richard. That book focused on the threat by machine-learning to doctors, lawyers and the like.

In the past the relationship between machine and human labour has been driven by two factors: the substituting effect, which caused people to lose jobs, and the complementing (补足) effect, which allowed employees to do their work more productively. The author worries that, in the future, the substituting effect will rule. Advances in AI have been so rapid that machines will eventually be better than people at most activities, he says. A few highly paid humans will still be employed, but the rest will either struggle to find work or fall into the “precariat”, stuck in jobs that are not just poorly paid but unstable and stressful.

Perhaps. It is impossible to be sure whether the latest advances will in the end have mainly good or bad economic effects. Books like his are a useful summary of the current debate on an important subject. But they are not crystal balls.

1William Lee’s request was turned down for fear that_________.

A.British people couldn’t afford the knitting machine

B.British workers were at the risk of losing their jobs

C.the knitting machine might be ruined by violent workers

D.William Lee would make a huge profit from the patent

2The fears of Queen in Paragraph 2 refer to the fear that____________.

A.fears can be echoed down for centuries

B.workers are too stressful with the help of machines

C.machines and automation threaten people’s employment

D.doctors, lawyers and the like are likely to be replaced

    3Daniel Susskind worries that___________.

A.most jobs will be at risk because of substituting effect

B.employees will work less productively because of complementing effect

C.30% of American workers will do jobs related to AI

D.large numbers of jobs will be lost because of complementing effect

4The writer’s attitude to AI advances is .

    A.indifferent B.positive

    C.negative D.uncertain
