二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Before the break of dawn, Simon was already standing on the shore watching the sea intensely for any signs of a coming storm. Despite learning from the weather forecast the likelihood of a violent storm, he didn’t change his mind about starting his weekly fishing trip. After checking for the third time that he had brought with him what he needed, Simon got onto his boat and sailed into the vast blue sea. Before long, he was anchoring(固定)his boat in the middle of the sea. Satisfied with the spot, he cast his net, hoping for a good catch.

Simon then relaxed on the deck and watched the sun rising slowly above the horizon. “One can never trust the weather station,” he said, but he had said it too soon. At that moment, there was a sudden strike of lightning, followed by a shout of thunder. The entire sky was suddenly filled with dark clouds. Wave after wave rolled up, hitting his boat and sending it rocking violently sideways. A sense of hopelessness drowned him but when images of his family flashed across his mind, he knew what he had to do. In double-quick time, he cut off the fishing lines and dumped his fishing equipment into the sea. Eventually, the storm eased and the waves died down.

To make matters worse, the boat engine died. As he was many kilometres offshore, the only likely rescue was to be spotted by a boat. But who would be out at sea in such horrible weather except him? That made Simon regret his earlier decision again.

Exhausted, Simon soon drifted off to sleep. When he awoke, the sun had already risen. Simon had lost track of time and location. Sighing, he stood on the deck, staring out hopefully. Then he spotted it. He dived into the water and swam towards the island a few metres ahead of him. When Simon reached land, he was too weak to stand on his legs. Fortunately, a kind-hearted man helped him up and contacted his family. Though Simon emerged from the nightmare unhurt, the fateful day remained forever in his mind. Neglecting the weather forecast, he paid a heavy price. He then learnt that everyone should respect science and be more mindful of his decision.

【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Not informed of the weather forecast, Simon went fishing as planned.

B.Simon lost his fishing equipment because it was blown off by the wind.

C.Love for his family made him take action trying to save himself.

D.Though he was finally saved, he was hurt badly.

【2】What did he see after he woke up?

A.Another boat ready to drag his boat.

B.A rescue team sent by his family.

C.A new boat engine to be equipped on his boat.

D.An island not far from his boat.

【3】What mainly caused him to meet with such a horrible event?

A.He was too confident of his ability to deal with the rescue team.

B.He ignored storm forecast and went fishing anyway.

C.His fishing equipment was too heavy for his boat.

D.He positioned his boat in a wrong location in the sea.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.A smooth fishing trip a fisherman used to have.

B.A terrible accident a fisherman experienced and how he survived.

C.The hardships a man has to handle when going fishing.

D.Ways to seek help in dangerous situations in life.

It was written by Sebastian Meschenmoser. A little squirrel(松鼠), who has never seen snow, is determined that he will not miss it this year. • 23、Many African people have always dreamed that one day the capitals of all African countries will be linked by high-speed railway lines. Now they have one step closer to realizing that dream.

On October 10, 2016, Africa’s first modern electrified railway, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, became fully operational. This railway, built by Chinese companies, is the first railway built using a complete set of Chinese standards outside China.

But it has not been easy for Chinese companies to win Ethiopian support for the project. The Ethiopian government once considered Western standards the best ones. But thanks to China’s outstanding performance in building and managing railways, Chinese firms ended up getting the project.

“After rounds of talks, the Ethiopian government came to realize that Chinese standards are not inferior (次于) to western ones, and more importantly, they best suit the country, " Meng Fengchao, board chairman of China Railway Construction Corp, told Xinhua.

This is just another of China’s recent achievements in railway building. China has the world’s longest railway and they make up a huge 60 percent of the world’s total. Besides length, China also does well in speed. China is the only country with trains running at 350 km per hour on lines such as Beijing-Tianjin and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railways.

Thanks to these achievements, it’s easy to forget that China wasn’t an early starter in the high-speed rail network game. Japan started 50 years ago, while Germany began 20 years ago. China only launched its high-speed railway14 years ago.

How has China’s high-speed railway been able to develop so quickly? The driving force behind the fast development has been the country’s great need for transportation.

“The high-speed railway not only covers the distance, but also connects people, information and goods, greatly boosting the regional economy, people’s lives and tourism, ” Huang Xin, an official from China Railway Corporation, told China Daily. The high-speed railway has become the transportation of choice for many Chinese people. According to China Railway Corp, about 4, 200 bullet trains run in China each day, meaning that more than 4. 5 million passengers can travel.

This is only the beginning of China’s high -speed railway development. The National Development and Reform Commission said that China plans to have 38, 000 km of high-speed railways by 2025.

【1】What can be learned about the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway?

    A.It was still under construction.

B.It links capitals of several countries.

C.It was the first electrified railway in Africa.

D.It was a combination of Chinese and West standards.

【2】What is China’s recent achievement in railway building?

A.China helps many other countries build railway.

B.Chinese standards suit most of the countries in the world.

C.China excels at both the length of railway and speed of trains.

D.China is one of the countries whose trains can run at 350km/h.

【3】Which statement is true according to the passage?

A.China was the pioneer of building high-speed rail networks.

B.China spent 14 years building a longest railway in the world.

C.China’s railway accounts for less than 60% of the world’s total.

D.China’s great need for transportation has driven railway development.

【4】Which could be the best title for the text?

A.China’s Railways Go to the World.

B.The Corporation between China and Africa.

    C.The Railway Development in Africa.

D.The History of High-speed Railway in the world.

  • 24、   The latest diet trend in America is also an ancient human activity. The activity is fasting, or not eating food for a set amount of time. Like other diets, intermittent fasting helps you lose weight by setting limits on eating. But instead of limiting what you eat, it limits when you eat.

One of the more popular approaches to intermittent fasting is called “time-restricted feeding”. It is not as difficult as some of the other approaches, since the fasting period can include the time you are sleeping. The basic idea of time-restricted feeding is to limit eating to an eight-hour period. You then fast during the day’s other 16 hours.

Many people make the eating period shorter or longer. Some eat just one meal a day. In other approaches, people fast several days during a week. On fasting days, some people may permit themselves around 600 calories. Whatever the approach, people are not supposed to overeat when they stop fasting.

Studies on the potential health benefits of intermittent fasting are still limited, including for its effectiveness with weight loss. For now, limited research suggests it may not be any better for weight loss than reducing calorie intake over the long term.

They point to a study of 100 people where those placed in a fasting group lost about the same amount of weight as those on diets that restricted calories. The fasting group had a dropout rate of 38 percent, compared with 29 percent for the caloric-restriction diet group.

People interested in intermittent fasting should talk to their doctor before trying it. Health experts do not recommend intermittent fasting for children, people on some medications and people with a history of eating disorders.

【1】What counts in the new diet trend in America?

    A.The quality of dinner.

    B.The amount of food.

    C.The dinning time.

    D.The type of diet.

【2】What does the author think of “time-restricted feeding”?

    A.Very strict.

    B.Nearly useless.

    C.Rather difficult.

    D.Relatively easy.

【3】Which of the following is the author's suggestion?

    A.Stick to the rules.

    B.Avoid eating too much.

C.Use a variety of methods to fast.

    D.Research intermittent fasting further.

【4】What do we know about intermittent fasting from the last paragraph?

    A.It's not fit for everyone.

B.It can cost a lot of money.

C.Health experts think highly of the method of losing weight.

    D.It's supported by some medicine.

  • 25、   Cowboy or spaceman? A dilemma for a children’s party, perhaps. But also a question for economists, argued Kenneth Boulding, a British economist, in an essay published in 1966. We have run our ______ , he warned, like cowboys on the open grassland: taking and using the world’s resources, ______ that more lies over the horizon. But the Earth is ______a grassland than a spaceship—a closed system, alone in space, carrying limited supplies. We need, said Boulding, an economics that takes seriously the idea of environmental ______. In the half century since his essay, a new movement has responded to his challenge. “Ecological economists”, as they call themselves, want to ______ its aims and assumptions. What do they say, and will their ideas take off? To its ______, ecological economics is neither ecology nor economics, but a mix of both. Their starting point is to recognize that the human economy is part of the natural world. Our environment, they note, is both a source of resources and a sink for wastes. But it is ______ in conventional textbooks, where neat diagrams trace the flows between firms, households and the government as though nature did not exist. That is a huge mistake.

There are two ways our economies can grow, ecological economists point out: through technological change, or through more intensive use of resources. Only the ______, they say, is worth having. They are suspicious of GDP, a simple ______ which does not take account of resource exhaustion, unpaid work, and countless other factors. ______ they advocate more holistic(全面的) approaches, such as the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), a composite index(复合指标) that includes things like the cost of pollution, deforestation and car accidents. While GDP has kept growing, global GPI per person ______ in 1978: by destroying our environment we are making ourselves poorer, not richer. The solution, says Herman Daly, a former World Bank economist and eco-guru, is a “steady-state” economy, where the use of materials and energy is held ______.

Mainstream economists are ______. The GPI, they point out, is a subjective measure. And talk of limits to growth has had a bad press since the days of Thomas Malthus, a gloomy 18th century cleric who predicted, wrongly, that overpopulation would lead to famine. Human beings find solutions to some of the most annoying problems. But ecological economists ______ self-satisfaction. In 2009 a paper in Nature, a scientific journal, argued that human activity is already ______safe planetary boundaries on issues such as biodiversity(生物多样性) and climate change. That suggests that ecological economists are at least asking some important questions, even if their answers turn out to be wrong.

  • 26、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

They’d been planning this forever. From her birth, most likely. Mya's mother, Helena loved hosting parties. And Aunt Beatrice loved birthdays. Together, they'd make her Sweet Sixteen a hundred times bigger, bolder, and brighter than it needed to be. They selected a theme every year and stuck to it. Her fourteenth had been the “Snow White” and her ninth had been the “Frozen”. They never told her what the theme was the day before. She'd just wake up her birthday morning, a brand new birthday outfit (一套服装) laid neatly on her dresser (an outfit related to the theme, of course) and she would open her door to see the adventure that lay ahead of her that day.

Mya had a few guesses as to what this year’s theme would be. A play on the words “Sweet Sixteen” was likely — a candy themed party, perhaps? But she’d had a baking party a few years ago — and Helena was anything but repetitive. Mya didn't have any interest in cars, so she doubted a sports-car party was on the menu. She’d tried to look through her mother’s purchase history online, but her mother had been careful enough to delete everything recent. So the only clue left was the birthday outfit she would receive the next morning.

May 1st, Mya woke. The bright sunlight begged her eyes to open and she loved the day that her birthday took place. It was always nice out on May 1st and it never rained. This morning was no different than her previous birthdays. She sat up in her bed and looked to her dresser before slipping out of bed and inspecting the outfit. She unfolded it and held it against her body, seeing how it was like. It reached down, just above the ankle. Mya dressed, eyed herself in the mirror and found it was not so much a pretty outfit as she had received before. It was totally one for blue-collar workers!
