  • 22、Do you think the United Kingdom and the United States are alike? Winston Churchill once joked that the people of Britain and the people of America are separated only by their language. Do you think that is true? The British and the Americans both speak English as the official language. However, each uses some different words. We Americans are similar to the British. After all, our country was once owned by the UK, so we have a lot in common. But there are many differences between us.

The UK has a king or queen, and the leader of the government is the Prime Minister. The US has no kings or queens. Our leader is the President.

Both the British and Americans use pounds and ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons. Both use miles, yards, and feet. Our money is different, though. The British use pounds and pence. Americans use dollars and cents.

Driving in a car is very different in the UK. They drive on the left side of the road. We drive on the right. What we call the hood of the car, the British call the “bonnet”. British cars run on “petrol” , which we call gasoline.

In our everyday life, we do many of the same things as the British. But we describe them differently. A young mother here might push a baby in a baby carriage. A British mum pushes a “pram”. The British watch “telly”, while we watch TV. We like to eat French fries, but the British call them “chips”. Millions of Americans drink coffee, but most British prefer tea.

So we are different in many ways. But we stay friendly anyway.

【1】What can we know from Winston Churchill's joke?

A.The UK and the US are very similar.

B.The people of the UK and the US are the same.

C.The languages of the UK and the US are the same.

D.There are many differences between the UK and the US.

【2】The British and Americans both use ________.

    A.miles and dollars

    B.pints and pence

    C.gallons and feet

    D.yards and cents

【3】Which of the following is used by the British?

    A.TV.

    B.Pram.

    C.Hood.

    D.French fries.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.We Stay Friendly

    B.A Common Language?

    C.English as the Official Language

D.Differences Between the UK and the US

  • 23、Locker Board skateboards were invented by 11-year-old Carson Kropfl, in October of 2016. He wanted a skateboard that could fit in his school locker and backpack, so he decided to create one out of a used skateboard deck. His parents told him he had to start cleaning to pay for his surf lessons and contests. Carson hates to clean, so he asked if he could start making and selling skateboards — like the one he had made for himself.

Carson collects used skateboard decks from skate shops and changes them to Locker Boards. He makes the Locker Board decks by hand. Each board is signed and numbered. The boards are then assembled with new, high-quality wheels. These are one-of-a-kind!

Carson started his online store in November of 2016 and shipped boards all over the country. The reason why Locker Boards have become so popular is that they are good for the planet, easy to take anywhere and fun to ride!

Vans, an American company, found out about what Carson was doing and in January of 2017, set up a monthly recycling program for him at two of their skate stores. Kids who want to donate used decks to Carson can leave them at these Vans locations. So far, Vans has donated over 10 boards to Locker Board.

A popular store in Southern California, Jack’s Surfboards, recently put Carson’s Locker Beard skateboards in their Dana Point store. Another skate shop in Huntington Beach has also started carrying Locker Board skateboards. In a few short months, Carson has appeared on several local news stations and been named by OC Family magazine as one of the top 10 Whiz Kids of Orange County, California.

This year, Carson is donating $1 for every board he sells to the Tony Hawk Foundation because they are focused on empowering kids through skating.

Carson feels the most rewarding part of this whole experience is how he has become a role model for other kids. His aim is to inspire kids to dream hard and work hard.

【1】Why did Carson Kropfl make a skateboard himself at first?

    A.To earn money.

    B.To satisfy his need.

C.To take part in a contest.

D.To show off to his classmates

【2】What can be learned about Locker Boards?

    A.They are large in size.

B.They look the same all over.

C.They are recycled by skate shops.

    D.They are environment-friendly.

【3】How did the public respond to the Locker Board?

    A.They spoke highly of it.

    B.They were astonished by it.

C.They paid little attention to it.

    D.They were doubtful about it.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Carson Kropfl?

    A.Sporty and proud.

    B.Generous and strict.

    C.Humorous and far-sighted.

    D.Creative and kind-hearted

  • 24、The sharing economy, represented by companies like Airbnb or Uber, is the latest fashion craze. But many supporters have overlooked the reality that this new business model is largely based on escaping regulations and breaking the law.

Airbnb is an Internet-based service that allows people to rent out spare rooms to strangers for short stays. Uber is an Internet taxi service that allows thousands of people to answer ride requests with their own cars. There are hundreds of other such services.

The good thing about the sharing economy is that it promotes the use of underused resources. Millions of people have houses or apartments with empty rooms, and Airbnb allows them to profit from these rooms while allowing guests a place to stay at prices that are often far less than those charged by hotels. Uber offers prices that are competitive with standard taxi prices and their drivers are often much quicker and more trustworthy.

But the downside of the sharing economy has gotten much less attention. Most cities and states both tax and regulate hotels, and the tourists who stay in hotels are usually an important source of tax income. But many of Airbnb’s customers are not paying the taxes required under the law.

Airbnb can also raise issues of safety for its customers and trouble for hosts’ neighbors. Hotels are regularly inspected to ensure that they are not fire traps and that they don’t form other risks for visitors. Airbnb hosts face no such inspections.

Since Airbnb is allowing people to escape taxes and regulations, the company is simply promoting thefts. Others in the economy will lose by bearing an additional tax burden or being forced to live next to an apartment unit with a never-ending series of noisy visitors.

The same story may apply with Uber. Uber is currently in disputes over whether its cars meet the safety and insurance requirements imposed on standard taxis. Also, if Uber and related services flood the market, they could harm all taxi drivers’ ability to earn a minimum wage.

This downside of the sharing needs to be taken seriously, but that doesn’t mean the current tax and regulatory structure is perfect.

【1】What is the positive thing about the sharing economy?

    A.It is a global trend.

    B.It is beyond regulations.

    C.It draws on spare resources.

    D.It brings in modest profits.

【2】What is the problem with Airbnb customers according to the passage?

    A.They are not regularly inspected.

B.They are likely to commit thefts.

C.They are allowed not to pay taxes.

D.They can be noisy to hosts’ neighbors.

【3】What is the argument over Uber according to the passage?

    A.Whether it guarantees customers, safety.

    B.Whether it provides reliable services.

    C.Whether it lowers customers’ expenses.

D.Whether it can compete with standard taxis.

【4】What will be talked about in the following paragraphs?

    A.Existing regulations and laws.

    B.Necessary improvements of current laws.

C.Further development of Airbnb and Uber.

D.More downsides of Airbnb and Uber.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Silverton, Oregon, is a small, rural farming community south of Portland. It is located at the base of Silver Falls State Park, which boasts ten waterfalls and is an attraction for outdoor enthusiasts.

It's a friendly, tri-cultural town, and I worked there as an English Language Learners teacher for girls who grew up speaking Russian or Spanish.

One day, I asked the girls what careers they were interested in. Across the board, the same answer was either wife/mother or hairdresser. I was confused. These were bright girls with so much to offer—such promise and untapped potential. And yet, they saw only two paths in their futures.

These girls needed role models. They needed exposure to the working world so they could make informed decisions.

It was a dilemma. How could I help them? What resources were available?

I searched the Internet, and I found a gender(性别)equality grant through the state and applied. Much to my delight, we were selected. Together with two very qualified educational assistants, we started planning. We needed to enlist the help of successful working women. I wanted to arrange field trips to their workplaces, but I was stopped. The conservative parents would not allow their girls to travel.

I was not going to be derailed, so I started making phone calls and inviting presenters to come to our school. To my surprise, many of them agreed to make the trip. The girls listened attentively to their presentations and responded with reflective, in-depth questions.

The school year passed quickly. When our final presenter had left, I posed the same question to the girls. "What careers are you interested in?" This time, the responses were very different: social workers, accountants, educational professionals, bookkeepers, nurses, managers. The results surpassed our expectations.

When our grant finished at the end of the year, the students, assistants and I were sad to see the program end. We were seeing phenomenal results and receiving very positive feedback from parents and the school district.

    Paragraph 1:

Then one day, as I was sitting at my desk pondering our situation, I received a call from an educational research program in Portland.
