21、In March 2020, when I stood alone in the middle of the main road to the Lake District, it felt like the end of the world. As a local farmer, I’ve grown used to the heavy traffic. But suddenly, everything changed. The lockdown brought quietness to the area, and I did feel a sense of relief to be done with the noise for a while.
Just off the main road is Matterdale, where I live with my family. We own a farm and our work focuses on tending farm animals. Like many who live in tourist attractions, we have been annoyed by some visitors. My farming would have been significantly easier without people parking in gateways, walking through the fields of lambs with loose dogs scaring them, or abandoning their tents along the river.
Despite my complaints, however, I would never reject visitors’ presence. I do understand their need for rest after months of urban life. In fact, I think I need them too. Of course, communities like ours rely on the income that tourism creates. But to me, there is something more personal. I once took my kids to the lake. Near the shore, we saw boys and girls playing together. A young dad was holding his kid’s hand as she tiptoed through the shallows. An elderly couple were sitting in the shade, admiring the view. I found myself content knowing that I was sharing this landscape with others.
As lockdown restrictions have relaxed and visitors started to come back, I wonder how we can coexist happily. For those who are reading this, I hope that my words can encourage you to respect the communities you visit, and understand the responsibilities that come with visiting those places. Our love can coexist, even if it sometimes makes life a little crowded.

22、You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”? Recently, a British survey(调查)shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers’ sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor(教授). “We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality(质量)of the sleep is low, too. If you don’t get a good rest, you won’t do well in school the next day.”
The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16 feeling the worst. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, MP5 or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and teenagers should spend less time on the electronic products.

24、As I look out of the window, an icy wind blows oak leaves across the yard. The stove in the living room has been maintaining a temperature that keeps my family comfortable through this winter’s temperature swings. 【1】
Plants naturally lose water from leaves through a process called transpiration (蒸腾作用). As a result, the plant’s roots take up water from the soil to replace what was lost.【2】 The flow of warm air over the plant’s leaves causes it to transpire at a faster rate. This means plants should be moved so that they are not in the path of airflow from the stove. It also means the soil should be checked for dryness more often during winter months.
【3】 Plants are commonly used in entryways to welcome guests. However, a wintry chill of 50 degrees or less every time a door is opened can have an adverse effect on some of the more sensitive plants. Secondly, we generally locate our plants where they will receive the best amount of sunlight for their needs. However, as seasons change, so does the sun’s location. In fall/winter months, the sun moves southward to a lower position in the sky. 【4】You may need to move the plant so that the light it receives is suitable for its needs.
Since light levels are lower in winter and plant growth slows, houseplants typically have little need for fertilizer during winter months. 【5】 A general rule of thumb when using houseplant fertilizers is to apply the fertilizer at one-half the rate recommended on the label.
A.It is not recommended to fertilize.
B.Eventually, the soil will become dry.
C.Wait until late winter/early spring to fertilize.
D.It may change the amount of light reaching your plant.
E.There are two additional considerations for where to place houseplants.
F.You should water when the soil feels dry to the touch one-half-inch deep.
G.While this may be good for the family, it may not be so for my houseplants.
