二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling played for parents of children receiving treatment at Comer Children’s Hospital, Jamie Freedlund spotted a mother who was just taking it all in — she was listening and there were just tears streaming down her face.

Tolling was invited to play by a charity called Mattea’s Joy, founded by Jamie and her husband, Gary. The non-profit provides dinner, snack boxes and other support for families with hospitalized children.

The Freedlunds founded Mattea’s Joy in honor of their daughter Mattea Joy Freedlund, who battled a variety of health challenges during her short but impactful life and died in 2010.

An insurance had been planned for the family before Mattea’s passing and the pair decided to use the money to cook meals for families whose children were hospitalized at Comer Children’s Hospital. Soon the dinners became a regular occurrence and their non-profit organization was born. Its mission is to provide care and comfort to families just like them.

Mattea’s Joy’s current projects include serving dinner to about 100 families a month, distributing snack boxes to hospitals, and providing packets filled with gift cards and parking passes.

Reese Freedlund, 15, was just 3 years old when her sister Mattea passed away. Their memory of Mattea lives on in her family’s volunteer work, which is impressed into everything they do. “Mattea’s Joy has really become a part of our lives,” said Reese. “Even though she passed away, her life was an inspiration for my parents to create something more out of it.”

Since Mattea’s passing, the Freedlunds have added two boys to their family, Cooper, 11, and Kipton, 7.   Cooper has learned valuable lessons from helping families through the organization. “Mattea’s Joy has taught me to always serve others and to just be kind,” said Cooper.

【1】Why was Mads Tolling mentioned in the first paragraph?

    A.To introduce the topic.

    B.To put forward a concept.

    C.To present a common scene.

    D.To provide background information.

    【2】What are the Freedlunds like?

    A.They can relate to others.

B.They have a gift for music.

    C.They are easily persuaded.

    D.They can seize opportunities.

【3】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

    A.Mattea Joy’s death remains a mystery.

B.The Freedlunds spent all their spare time volunteering.

C.Working for Mattea’s Joy benefits the Freedlunds’ kids.

D.Reese Freedlund was inspired to create a new organization.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

    A.Rewards for kindness

    B.Kindness Arising from Loss

    C.Memories of the Freedlunds

    D.Comfort brought by Luckier People

  • 22、When we’re in need, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?

In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.

These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯)when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.

It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.

A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”

Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.

1The passage is mainly about ______.

    A. privacy online   B. parents’ friend requests

    C. the generation gap   D. social networks

    2From Paragraph 2, we learn that ______.

    3Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ______.

    A. their parents make negative comments on them

    B. they hide something from their parents

    C. they are unwilling to be watched by parents

    D. their parents tend to fall behind in technology

4The passage is written mainly for ______.

  • 24、David Frank started working for tips when he was 11 years old, delighting restaurant diners in New York with his magic tricks. As a teenager he would make an average of $60-70 in an evening—not bad, but he wanted more. So he started reading research on tipping, and found a study showing that servers who left a sweet at the end of the meal could up their pay. He tried handing customers a playing card at the end of his act, which he hoped would persuade them to part with more cash. It worked.

Mr. Frank's findings confirmed the notion of the tip as a sort of reward for outstanding service. For a start, economists are puzzled by the fact that so many people give tips, voluntarily handing out cash for a routine service, when it is assumed that customers generally want to pay as little as possible for what they buy. But fuzzier factors also seem to matter, like the feelings of gratitude that Mr. Frank inspired. A Survey in 2010 by Ofer Azar of Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that 85% of American tippers claimed to be following a social pattern, while 60% said they tipped to avoid guilt.

During the pandemic these fuzzy factors appear to have strengthened. Mr. Lynn observed that people have been tipping more generously even while ordering take-away food.

The presence of a pandemic or of a magician performing at one's table are just two of many factors that may affect the size of a tip. A tipper may simply be touched by the server. If a waiter squats down beside you at the table as he or she takes your order, that often brings a higher tip. Good weather may encourage generosity too. Race can be an uglier factor. A study of tips for cab drivers found that black drivers were tipped on average at a rate of 13%, while white drivers got 20%.

【1】Why did David Frank hand customers a card?

    A.To delight the customers.

    B.To provide the best service.

    C.To satisfy their needs.

    D.To increase his income.

【2】What do we know about the tipping fact?

A.Customers want to pay as few tips as possible.

B.Most tippers in America tip because others tip.

C.Tipping is the best way to show gratitude.

D.Tipping is usually included in the bill.

【3】Why does the author mention "take-away food"?

A.To indicate take- away food is more popular during pandemic.

B.To persuade readers to order take-away food in pandemic.

C.To emphasize that people tend to give more tips in pandemic.

D.To explain there's no need to tip in terms of take-away food.

【4】What can we infer from last paragraph?

    A.The pandemic makes tips unaffordable.

B.The customers' mood influences their tipping.

C.Tipping has nothing to do with weather.

D.There are more white drivers than black ones.
