二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.

In recent years, many writers have begun to speak of the ‘decline of class ’ and ‘classless society ’ in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.

But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging study of pubic opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in a particular class; 73 percent agreeed that class was still a vital part of British society.; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an imprtant part of British society. Britain seems to have a love ofstratification.

One unchanging aspect of a British person’s class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during the 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounds ‘educated ’ and ‘soft ’. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional(地区的) city accents. These accents were seen as ‘common ’ and ‘ugly ’. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.

In recent years, however, young upper midder-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song ‘ Common People ’ puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may ‘ want to live like common people ’ they can never appreciate the reality of a working class life.

1A recent study of pubic opinion shows that in modern Britain_________.

    A. it is time to end class distinction

    B. most people belong to middle class

    C. it is easy to recognize a person’s class

    D. people regard themselves socially different

2The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to_________.

    A. variety   B. division

    C. authority   D. qualification

3The study in the US showed that BBC English was regarded as _________.

    A. regional   B. educated

    C. prejudiced   D. unattractive

    4British attitudes towards accent_________.

    A. have a long tradition

    B. are based on regional status

    C. are shared by the Americans

    D. have changed in recent years

5What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The middle class is expanding.

    B. A person’s accent reflects his class.

    C. Class is a key part of British society.

    D. Each class has unique characteristics.

  • 22、   When I was in college, a man named Henry worked as a custodian (看门人) in our student union building. White-haired, with a Pennsylvania Dutch accent, Henry could usually be seen in a baseball cap, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans.

He was the custodian, and he was the most respected and most well-known person in the building. Everyone loved Henry, and it was because of all the implicit ways he expressed his love for everyone around him. Henry didn’t have to say, “I love you.” He lived his love.

Henry was always excited when he met someone new, and he wanted to know everything about them. He felt it was important to do things for people he valued. And Henry seemed to value everyone he met. He brought in articles or cartoons for certain people, went out of his way to introduce people to each other, kept dozens of names and birthdays in his wallet so he could send cards, and helped students keep in touch with graduates who had written to him. He even assisted students who didn’t have enough money to buy their books.

Henry taught me --- and many others he supported --- how to live life to the fullest. Not by skydiving or exploring some foreign countries, but by appreciating where you are in life and valuing those around you.

The funny thing is that despite all he did and taught us, Henry truly believed that he was the lucky one --- that he was the one who was gaining so much by getting to know us. But all of us who remember Henry know that we were the ones who were truly blessed.

We will never forget the man who taught us that best way to say “I love you” often has little to do with the words.

1What does the word “implicit” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

    A.silent. B.proper.

    C.attractive. D.unbelievable.

2According to the passage, working as a custodian in a college, Henry .

A.made international travels to live a full life

B.was a role model of how to be a caring person

C.was busy organizing former students’ reunions

D.gathered plenty information about the needy students

3Henry was always excited to meet new people because .

A.it would make people think highly of him

B.he was the most popular person in the college

C.it was part of his responsibility as a custodian

D.he treasured everything around him in his life

4Which of the following word cannot be used to describe Henry?

    A.Kind. B.Adventurous.

    C.Supportive. D.Sympathetic

  • 23、Over the weekend, social media was excited about a heart-stopping gymnastic routine and we have UCLA athlete Katelyn Ohashi to thank. The routine itself is only ninety seconds long, but the 21-year-old athlete jumped, flipped, turned, and showed off her incredible talent across the floor to a combination of R&B and soul music. Ohashi earned a well-deserved perfect 10 from the judges and her performance eventually led the UCLA to victory at the end of the competition.

But the best part? This isn’t the first time she’s gone viral — it’s the second time in a year she’s achieved eye-catching fame, and it’s for good reason. At the 2018 Pac 12 Championships, Ohashi performed an awesome floor routine set to a combination of Michael Jackson’s hits.

Ohashi exudes (流露) joy in her performances, and she’s not afraid to smile widely when she knows she’s done well. It’s acceptable, because it’s clear she’s having fun, a rare sight in the field of professional sports. Born in Seattle, Ohashi did four years on the USA Gymnastic’s junior national team, and won the 2013 American Cup. But behind the scenes, things weren’t so great.

Ohashi was under intense pressure competing at the elite (精英) level. Fans told her she wasn’t good enough, and she was under pressure to be thin. Ultimately, she decided to walk away from elite gymnastics to become a college athlete. She underwent surgery for a broken back and two torn shoulders in 2014. These injuries kept her away from the sport until 2015 when she joined the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team for the 2015–16 season.

“There was a time when I was on top of the world, an Olympic hopeful. I was unbeatable until I wasn’t,” Ohashi said. “It hurt. But it also took me finding Ms. Val and the UCLA and having a different goal and path to follow, to finally find joy and love within the sport again, which I haven’t been able to feel in a long time.”

【1】Which is closest in meaning to the phrase “gone viral” underlined in paragraph 2?

    A.Become popular.

    B.Appear suddenly.

    C.Change surprisingly.

    D.Succeed unexpectedly.

C.She won her first victory in the UCLA.

【3】How does Ohashi sound in the end?

    A.Regretful.

    B.Appreciative.

    C.Humorous.

    D.Confused.

【4】What is the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Regain self-confidence

    B.Battle against ill remarks

    C.Go beyond physical limits

    D.Rediscover joy of gymnastics

  • 24、   Consider how difficult the idea of a patent was to a woman in the early 19th century. As daughters, their property belonged to their father; as wives, their property belonged to their husband. In a land where women could neither own goods nor enter into contracts with suppliers, it seemed impossible for women to apply for a patent.

But a woman in Connecticut named Mary Dixon Kies had an idea worth patenting. It came to her during a time of fashion emergence in the United States. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson decided to ban the import of British goods. In the end, the official freeze in trade proved to be a disaster, causing exports to drop sharply.

Just 15 months of the ban forced the American fashion industry to turn inward. Now that New England couldn't ship goods, it had to make them instead. Kies wasn't the first woman to improve hat making at that time. A young girl named Besty Metcalf, who saw a straw hat in a store window that she couldn't afford, went home and came up with a different technique to make her own. I hat idea turned New England into a hotbed of straw hat making.

Though Metcalt never patented her straw hat-making technique, when Kies came up with her idea she did. Her own method was to weave silk or thread into the straw, creating a pleasing appearance. One took advantage of a relatively new law, the 1790 Patent Act, which allowed all persons ask for protection of their original methods and designs, and got the first patent ever awarded to a woman on May 15, 1809.

Kies’ method took off and fueled the growing straw hat industry. When Lames Madison President that year, he sighed Kies’ patent and First lady Dolley Madison apparently was so taken with Kies’ creation that she wrote to her and congratulated her on helping women in the industry.
