  • 21、Perhaps you have ever heard the saying: Change is the only constant. Everyone, without doubt, goes through changes in their life, whether it is a physical state of aging or a mental state of emotional maturity. However, some are afraid to make the conscious decision to move or they think it's too late to have a fresh start.

I have a friend named Jack. At the age of 37, he is a Senior Manager at one of the Big Four. He has a great salary, owns his own apartment and enjoys the fine things in life, but not without the heavy burdens that his job brings. On the surface, it looks like he has got life figured out. Yet when I once asked if he was happy with his work, he answered that he some- times wished to quit his job to do something less stressful. But he’d become accustomed to this lifestyle and felt that it would be too late to give it up to achieve a new ambition.

For him, the risks are too high, so whether he can't abide his present job or not, he has to choose to suck it up. You might have come to a similar situation as Jack’s or you might be a Jack. You're now facing a wall. No matter what it is—the stress of your job or the terrible feeling, it’s time that you had to decide whether you'll tear down that wall or continue to let it enclose you. I suggest pushing back the boundaries and breaking the fixed patterns. Why do you feel it's too late to start over? That is simply because you're comparing yourself with others—younger or more successful individuals. In fact, you should compare yourself with the older version of you.

Don't become that person who lets life pass by only to regret it when you are making your way into old age. Don't let your life plateau(停滞不前)and waste away in the daily chores. Don't give up the potential you still have hidden and be locked away by your current state. Now, you’d better bravely start going after the things you want to do, without abandoning your dreams, ambitions and responsibilities.

【1】What kind of people does Jack represent according to the author?

    A.Those leading a happy life.

    B.Those having an easeful career.

C.Those thinking it's too late to change.

D.Those having a high ambition to work.

【2】What does the underlined word “abide” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Value.

    B.Recommend.

    C.Understand.

    D.Tolerate.

【3】What does the author advise us not to do?

    A.Let life stand still.

    B.Enjoy the present job.

C.Have a small goal in life.

    D.Consider ourselves as a failure.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

    A.Everyone Can Meet a Jack

    B.Don't Try to Control Yourself

C.Never Think Change Is Too Late

    D.You Should Make Alteration Earlier

  • 22、   Futurologists are making a lot of predictions about our future life and they are predicting how we will travel, work and live in the next 30 years. By 2048, some futurologists foresee that some talking"  buildings will appear in our life.

By the middle of the century, its believed that buildings will be able to “talk" to people through various sensors when the heating needs to be turned on. As a result, there will be no switches. Instead, a lot of networks will appear, which can be compared to a human nervous system. In the next 30 years, buildings will be made from concrete plastics and shape-changing materials. All of them can heal themselves at that time. As architects (建筑师)are racing to develop the world's tallest buildings, there will be a need for new kinds of elevators, through which vehicles could even travel into the buildings. German engineers have already started working on such technology called Multi.

By mid-century, scientists believe that buildings will be miles tall. Some of them may be very large and they can function as small cities. By comparison,at present, the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, measures 829. 8 metres high. As the future building can rise through the clouds, their windows will be replaced by virtual screens. In this way, people can choose any view as they like.

At height extremes, a London Spaceport is also likely to come into being by 2048 as the space industry develops very quickly. There is a huge cost advantage going to space from as high a base as possible, so a spaceport is very likely to be over 10km and even as much as 30km, using carbon- based materials.

1How will the heating system be controlled in the future?

    A.Through the net. B.Through mobiles.

    C.Through sensors. D.Through switches.

2What might happen to the future buildings in a disaster?

A.They can recover by themselves. B.They can seek help automatically.

C.They can transport people into space. D.They can protect people against harm.

3What's the possible advantage of Multi?

A.Seeing the beautiful scenery. B.Allowing vehicles to travel into buildings.

C.Connecting the earth with the space. D.Making it possible to build high buildings.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Be the Best Buildings with Carbon-based Materials

B.The Higher the Building, the Better

C.Smart Buildings in the Next 30 Years

    D.More Functions, Less Cost

  • 23、A trip to a bank’s ATM machine is usually a common affair, but for Jose Nunez Romaniz, his visit on a Sunday is one that he will remember for the rest of his life. The 19-year-old was helping his grandfather buy a pair of socks online when he noticed his account balance was low. So he drove to the nearest Wells Fargo to put money into his hank account. Little did he know, he was about to make an incredible discovery.

When he arrived at the ATM machine, Jose noticed a clear plastic bag on the ground filled with cash. It turned out to be $135,000 worth of $50 and $20 bills. When he first saw it, he stared at it for a few seconds, not knowing what to do. He was very shocked. He had never seen so much money. After taking a moment to collect himself, Jose did what he knew was the right thing: he called the police. They soon discovered that the money had accidentally been left behind by a worker tasked with refilling the ATM.

Jose’s childhood dream has been to work in law enforcement (执法机关) himself and currently studies criminal justice at Central New Mexico Community College. Local businesses have showered Jose with accolades. He has received gift cards from local restaurants, sports gear, and season tickets for University of New Mexico football offered by ESPN radio. He was also given a $500 scholarship from an electric company. And, perhaps best of all, the police chief invited Jose to apply for a job as a public service assistant for the department. “It was also the best gift for Mother’s Day. She called me and almost started crying... She told me she was proud of me,” Jose Nunez Romaniz said.

【1】Why did Jose go to the Wells Fargo?

    Tap Mun

Located north of the Sai Kung island, Tap Mun is home to a remote fishing, community with a population of less than a hundred. Tap Mun is also widely known as Grass Island, and it’s easy to see why — this 1.7sq km island is an expense of grassy hill populated by wandering cows, a perfect scene to set a milk advertisement.

Tap Mun is highly sought after as a spot for both camping and kite-flying, while also boasting several rocky beaches. For a relaxing afternoon, take a walk along the 2km footpath and slowly take in the panoramic(全景的) 360-degree view while enjoying the cool breeze.

    Po Toi

Located just three kilometers away from Hong Kong Island’s southeastern tip, Po Toi is a quiet place that will make you feel completely isolated from modern life. While just a stone’s throw away from the busy life of Hong Kong, Po Toi seems to be miles away from the busy city life.

Take a leisurely stroll (闲逛) along the main path on the island, as you approach a lighthouse located on the sides of the cliff. Along the way, do not miss the dramatic and unusual rock formations as you are amazed by the glory of the famous Turtle Climbing up the Mountain, Monk Rock, and Palm Cliff.
