21、Many of you should not own dogs. It’s that simple. The reason is that, if you own a dog, you must train a dog, and many dog owners out there, it is safe to say, have little or no control over their dogs, because they do not train them.
Strong words? Maybe. But they are simple, honest words, as untrained dogs living in residential neighborhoods bark at will, run loose, and visit and damage neighboring properties with their owners’ blessings as they let them run on purpose.
Take note of the fact that you, the dog owner, cannot control your dog causing a continual nuisance(麻烦事)that damages the quality of life in your neighborhood. There’s nothing more annoying to most people than a dog that barks and nothing more confusing than trying to understand the deficient(有缺陷的)mentality of the dog owner who allows his dog to do so.
After all, the irresponsible dog owner hears the barking too, and so those who must put up with it are continually left wondering-what are they thinking, are they deaf?
Many dog owners believe it is not possible for their dog to be trained, an indication that the owners themselves lack self discipline, and most likely have never really tried to apply discipline to other issues in their lives, not with consistency, or that they are simply lazy and inattentive(疏忽的) to their own adult responsibilities at the expense of others.
Irresponsible dog owners, though, do train their dogs. A dog is a reflection of its owner. Whatever a dog does (run loose, bark at will, jump on guests entering the front door, soil neighboring lawns) is a result of the decisions of the owner. The choice not to do something is indeed a choice.
The good news is that with mere consistency(一致性), a dog can be trained rather quickly, in a couple of weeks if the owner takes his responsibility seriously. Again, that process will be a reflection of the owner's behavior, and the primary ingredient(要素)in that behavior is not allowing the dog, not even once, to repeat the bad behavior without consequences when told and directed not to. You can stop your dog from barking with simple firm voice commands, direct eye contact, and force of will in a relatively short time, as long as you are consistent and a reasonably mature person.
Dogs, what’s more, love this training because pleasing you, their owner, is what they are all about. The upshot(结果,要点)will be that you have a more connected relationship you’re your dog, a better dog that is suitable for its environment.
【1】Which is NOT the reason for dog owners to have little or no control over their dogs?
A. They are lazy and unwilling to train their dogs.
B. They think their dogs can act well without training.
C. They lack self-control over many issues in daily life.
D. They don't give enough attention to their responsibilities.

22、Not only is music a set of sounds and rhythms but it also influences the brain more deeply than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.

23、Many people agree that our lives have been changed by the Internet, but I have recently realized that I spend nearly my entire day online!
【1】 I usually have messages from friends or family, and I always reply right away. Then I open my favourite online radio station and listen to music while I get ready for school. While I’m eating breakfast, I often read news articles online. On my way to school, I usually wear my earphones so I can listen to an English podcast (播客) with interesting talks about many different topics. 【2】
After lunch, I like to check some online forums (论坛) on topics I’m interested in, such as pop music and TV shows. I read the updated posts from other forum members and post my own thoughts. 【3】 It’s also a good way to connect with others who share the same interests as me. On the way home from school, I almost always use one of the many learning apps on my phone.
After dinner, I start my homework, and that often means going online to do research. My history teacher, my Chinese literature teacher, and my English teacher all often give homework. 【4】 So I’m nearly always online in the evening, reading online resources for my homework.
My final thing to do every day is to listen to an audio (录音的) book online before I go to sleep!【5】 Reading books is a great way to fall asleep. However, I don’t like to look at a screen just before bedtime, so audio books are the perfect thing for me.

24、Have you ever dreamed of traveling to space? With many developments in space travel, you may soon be able to book a ticket.
Fly me to the moon
Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, 46, has invited eight members of the public to join him for a trip around the moon with the help of Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.
The mission, called dearMoon, will take three days to fly to the moon, orbit and then spend three days returning. In addition to its historic first as a private lunar mission, the rocket’s flight path means it will go beyond the distance traveled by the US Apollo missions, Musk told CNBC, an American news channel. DearMoon is scheduled for 2023.
Living in space hotel
Instead of squeezing into a space cabin, how about enjoying your time in a hotel? The world’s first space hotel is due to start construction in 2025.
Developed by US company Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), the space station will be a large circular structure. It will rotate (旋转) to generate artificial gravity, similar to the level found on the surface of the moon, according to the Daily Mail. The hotel is expected to have restaurants, cinemas and rooms for up to 400 guests.
Short space trip
While some people may like to stay in space for a long time, others may prefer to simply have a taste. Tickets for a 90-minute journey have been on sale to the public since Feb 16. The first commercial tourist flights with Virgin Galactic, a private space tourism company founded by British businessman Richard Branson, are set for later this year.
The journey to the edge of space will begin with the spacecraft attached to a twin-fuselage (双机身) aircraft. At a certain altitude, the craft detaches (分离) from the jet and fires its engines. It then climbs to reach the edge of the atmosphere, according to The Independent.
The spaceship gracefully flips (翻转) while astronauts enjoy several minutes of out-of-scat weightlessness and breath-taking views of Earth from the spaceship’s 17 windows, according to the company.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Could you be flexitarian?
What kind of food do you eat? Are you conscious of the types of food you consume? Although there is research on the right diet to follow to help us maintain a healthy lifestyle — but it’s hard to know which one to pick and, once chosen, it’s harder still to stick to it. And now there’s another choice for you.
A flexitarian diet involves eating plant-based foods and only occasionally eating meat and fish. This is a lovely alternative to being a vegetarian by not completely resisting meat.
This eating style allows you to supplement some ingredients that you wouldn’t get in a stricter vegan (纯素) diet. And like veganism, flexitarianism isn’t about eating carefully to help you lose a few pounds — it’s something people choose for ethical reasons, to help the planet. And a study into the global food system and how it affects the climate, has found that eating mainly plant-based foods is one of three key steps towards a sustainable future for all.
This research found that food waste will need to be halved and farming practices will also have to improve to achieve this. But without a single solution, a combined approach is needed. Dr. Marco Springmann, one of the lead authors of the report argued “We really found that a combination of measures would be needed to stay within environmental limits and those include changes towards healthier more plant-based diets.”
While vegans think it’s wrong for animals to be killed for food, flexitarians believe eating meat once in a while is acceptable. And Dr. Springmann agrees — as long as we “treat it as a luxury, it’s probably acceptable but you shouldn’t have more than one serving of red meat, which includes beef and pork, per week.” And here’s another fact to digest: If we moved to this type of diet, the study found that greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture would be cut by more than half.
