  • 21、Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the summer term. It felt like a really long break and students have come back well rested. On INSET day, all staff worked with educational official, John Tomsett, on some of our key classroom development areas. It’s so important that our staff continue to develop and that we always find ways to improve our classroom practice.

It was fantastic to see so many of our parents at last Sunday’s Year 7 Parents and Carers’ Evening and the Year 11 Mock Exam Results Evening this Friday. We have a series of parental events over the summer term which you are all welcome to attend. Year 10 and Year 8 have not had an in-person event this year and therefore we have put on two additional events:

Tuesday 7th JuneYear 10 Parent Information Evening

This event provides you with an opportunity to meet staff and find out how to begin revision and preparation for GCSE exams.

Wednesday 22nd JuneYear 8 Electives Evening

This is an evening for students to choose an extracurricular activity to support future career plans. Staff will also be about this night for discussions.

Please do download our free parent app as all communication with regard to your child will be sent by the app.

Over the Easter period, the school kept busy with a Holiday Club which saw 70 of our new Year 7 students join us for a full day of activities.

I want to extend my thanks to all our parents and carers for their support and of course our staffing body, but most of all, your fantastic young people who did so well during Ofsted’s (英国教育标准局) visit.

All the best for a restful weekend!

  • 22、   I spend half of my life with my mother and the other half with my father. My father lives with a twenty-pound cat named Tofu. He calls me his favorite daughter. I am an only child.

My father's apartment is quite different from any other person's living space. Except for my room, there is no furniture. He doesn't like sofas or any comfortable chairs, so he has only a drawing table, a desk and his bed. He spends a lot of time lying on the studio floor. That's how he thinks, he says. Then he does yoga

He has a big kitchen, and on top of the refrigerator is an old clock he winds every week for good luck. The last time the clock stopped, my father's car was towed(被警察拖走) and some other terrible things happened, so he has become very superstitious (迷信的) . When he goes out of town, he hires someone to feed Tofu and wind the clock so it won't stop.

The one thing he has plenty of is house rules. You have to take off your shoes when you come in. He won't allow anyone who wears a baseball cap into his house. He says only baseball players should wear baseball caps and only the catchers should wear them backward. Every time I go to stay in his house, he makes up a new rule. “House rule number 579, no television programs with laugh tracks”he will say. But then be can never remember the numbers, so they change constantly.

The rule that he always enforces is the one that requires me to write a two-page essay anytime I want something. He didn't speak English until he was sixteen, and he had a hard time learning to write it, so he wants me to become a good writer at an early age. This ritual(仪式)started when I asked him if I could have my ears pierced when I was nine. He said it was very cruel and told me I couldn't do it until I was thirty-five. But l kept asking him, and he finally said that if I wrote an essay and I could persuade him in writing why I wanted holes in my ears, maybe he would say okay. I wrote my first essay for my father, and after one month of writing and rewriting, he finally. gave me his permission.

1What is unusual about the father's apartment?

    A.It has a large kitchen.

B.The father does yoga at home.

    C.It is scarcely furnished.

D.The father spends a lot of time on the floor.

2Which of the following is an example of the house rules?

A.Someone is hired to feed Tofu.

B.You can't wear shoes in the house.

C.Baseball players are not allowed into the apartment.

D.The writer can't watch television programs in the apartment.

3Which of these statements about the clock is TRUE?

A.It is not an automatic one.

B.Her father doesn't like the clock.

C.It can bring good luck to them.

D.Someone is hired to wind it every week.

4We can infer that the writer's father____.

    A.was a famous writer

B.was born in the United States

C.was a caring and strict father

    D.speaks more than one language

Her parents, both teachers, had small salaries and were quite poor, especially after her mother stopped teaching to raise five children and take care of her poor health. Marie's mother suffered from tuberculosis and died of it when Marie was ten.

When Marie was small, she showed great interest in science. She loved to study and hoped to become a scientist when she grew up. Her parents encouraged her interest in science. Excellent as she was in her studies, she couldn't go on with the advanced education she needed because Poland was then ruled by Russia and women were not permitted to go to college.

In order to continue her education, she smoothed away many difficulties and entered Paris University, where she lived a simple life and studied hard, so she graduated with the highest grades in her class.

After graduation she was engaged in scientific research in Paris University. There she met Pierre Curie, whom she married. Pierre joined her in her research into an unknown phenomenon “radiation”, which a certain scientist had declared that uranium gave off. The Curies spent several years trying their best to find the element that produced radiation. Finally they succeeded in 1902.

  • 24、A new device works like a solar panel (太阳电池板), except it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun to produce electricity. Instead, it uses energy from the cold night sky.

In the center of this device is a thermoelectric generator (热电发电机), which uses the temperature difference between Earth and outer space to create electricity.

As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed under a transparent shelter and surrounded with materials that keep heat out. It stays cooler than the surrounding air by getting rid of any heat it absorbs as infrared (红外线的) radiation. That radiation can zip up through the transparent cover and on toward outer space.

The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate, which is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get several degrees centigrade cooler than the bottom of the generator.

Researchers tested the device one clear December night in Stanford, Calif. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of the device. That was just enough power to light a small electric lamp. Further improvements might develop its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter.

“It’s a very clever idea,” says Yuan Yang, a materials scientist who works at Columbia University in New York City. “The device still needs improving,” he notes. “But this new device may be useful for backup power,” Yang says, “It might also provide a bit of energy to people living in areas that lack electricity.”

“The device could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices,” says Aaswath Raman, a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. What’s more, this may be useful in areas that don’t see sunlight for months at a time, Raman adds.

【1】What is the limitation with the tested device?

A.It won’t be expanded to be much larger.

B.It fails to produce electricity fast enough.

C.It is unable to power small electric lamps.

D.It produces a limited amount of electricity.

【2】In paragraph 6, Yuan Yang mainly intends to________.

A.evaluate the device on a positive basis

B.point out the problems with the device

C.explain the research work for the device

    D.comment on Aaswath Raman’s prediction

【3】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Lamps Are Powered by the Energy from the Cold Night Sky

B.A Generator Producing Electricity Has Been Applied in Many Areas

C.Scientists Have Made a Breakthrough in Harvesting Green Energy

D.A Device Uses Energy from the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
