21、The goal of writing a resume is to show employers you are well fit for the job. Adding information like your skills can help convey why the employer should advance you in the hiring process. Another section you might consider is to add voluntary work.
Reasons for listing voluntary work | ★ To provide information on changeable skills when shifting careers or industries ★ To give background when there are gaps in your resume due to leaving the workforce for an extended period of time ★ To add to a resume with limited professional experience (important to recent college or high school graduates) |
How to list voluntary work on your resume | ★ If you have professional experience, you should include only three to five most recent and relevant jobs. If not, consider adding volunteer positions to your professional background section. List relevant volunteer experiences under your professional history section. ★ If you gained or improved important skills through voluntary work, include these skills and developments in the voluntary work description. Pay attention to any skills that may also be important to your potential employers. ★ If you have volunteer experiences that are unrelated to your industry, you might consider including a brief voluntary work section at the bottom of your resume if you feel it will set you apart from other candidates. You can format this section the same as your professional work experience section or write a shortened version that takes up less space. |
【1】Why should you add voluntary work to your resume?
A.To indicate you are professional.
B.To prove you have wide interests.
C.To show your fitness for special jobs.
D.To explain the gap in your working record.

A.Include 4-5 recent voluntary experiences.
B.Describe the skills gained from volunteering.
C.Create a separate and large section.
D.Avoid rough description of voluntary work.
【3】What type of writing is this text?
A.A notice.
B.An ad.
C.A guidance.
D.An invitation.
22、 One of the tallest wooden buildings in Europe, a 98m timber(木材) mixture skyscraper, is to rise in Berlin.
The 29-storey WoHo tower, to be designed by a firm of Norwegian architects, is intended to be a “light-house project” for low-carbon construction, towering over Potsdamer Platz and the Landwehr Canal.
Its core, including lifts and staircase, is to be built around steel-reinforced(加固) concrete structure but the rest of the building, including flats, offices, cafes and a kindergarten, will be fashioned down wooden beams(横梁) and panels.
“As Norwegians, we are used to working a lot with timber.” Nicolai Riise, CEO of the Mad Architects' Practice said.
“The thing about timber is that its carbon footprint is close to zero and that it's fantastic material to build with. If you look at this in a broader way, it's one of the ways we are going to be able to beat the climate crisis.”
Wooden skyscrapers, once regarded as a pipe dream, have become realistic with the coming of cross-laminated-(交叉叠合) building techniques. Because these structures' parts are fit with care, they can be far lighter than their concrete equivalents(同等物) and are thought to be relatively resistant to fire. A cubic meter of wood can also take an estimated ton of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Larger wooden structures are planned elsewhere. London is examining blueprints for a 300-meter Oakwood Tower. A project in Tokyo could rise to 350m.
【1】What is special about the WoHo Tower?
A.It will serve as a light house.
B.Its core is to be built with timber.
C.It is designed for a Norwegian firm.
D.It will be a tall timber mixture building.
【2】What does Nicolai Riise say about timber?
A.It used to be a good choice.
B.It is easy to collect.
C.It is environmentally-friendly.
D.The broader type works better.
【3】What do the underlined words “a pipe dream” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.A nightmare.
B.Something practical.
C.A piece of cake.
D.Something impossible.
【4】What makes it a reality to build wooden skyscrapers?
A.Flexible ideas.
B.The concrete equivalents.
C.Fire resistant materials.
D.New building techniques.
23、The history of the flying car is almost as old as that of powered flight itself. It started with the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917, awkward-looking equipment with separable wings. It never left the ground. Later machines made it into the skies but failed to take off commercially. Money is now pouring into flying taxis. On March 30th Lilium, a German company that develops them, announced cooperation with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that values it at $3.3 billion — a sign that investors think the business will fly.
Thanks to better batteries and lightweight materials the vehicles, some of them ten years in the making, are ready to carry passengers. Up to 300 firms are working on short-range battery-powered craft that take off and land vertically, estimates Natasha Santha of LEK, a consultancy.
Midway between a cab and a helicopter, flying taxis have obvious advantages over both. Quiet electric motors allow them to operate frequent services. They require only a small area to land, unlike noisy helicopters, which face severe operating restrictions in most cities. They can fly four or five times faster than a cab can drive and do not get stuck in traffic. Prices can be kept low by ride-sharing. Joby, based in California, says its five-seater machine will enter commercial service in 2024. The firm calculates the initial cost of around $4 per person per mile may soon fall by 25%. It plans to start service soon afterwards.
The real change will come when full autonomy (自动驾驶) takes out the cost of a pilot. Archer hopes to run such aircraft by 2028. They face fewer obstacles in the air than earth-bound cars do on the road; airliners mostly fly on autopilot as it is. Still, as one industry insider puts it, it is probably best to adapt passengers and regulators to airborne taxis before laying off the driver.
【1】What do investors think of the business of flying cars?
A.Unpredictable.
B.Challenging.
C.Promising.
D.Rough.
【2】What is the advantage of flying taxis over cabs?
A.Fewer noises.
B.Faster rides.
C.Lower prices.
D.Smaller parking spaces.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.There will be many traffic jams in the air.
B.Flying taxis will soon take the place of cars.
C.Flying taxis without drivers are not widely accepted.
D.The current planes are equipped with no human pilots.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Flying Taxis Take Off at Last
B.Long History of Flying Taxis
C.Life in the Future with Flying Taxis

24、Life-Changing Science Discoveries
Here’s a look at some discoveries that have changed the world. It’s impossible to rank their importance, so they’re listed in the order they were discovered.
Micro-organism
Before French chemist Louis Pasteur began experimenting with bacteria in the 1860s, people did not know what caused disease. He not only discovered that disease came from micro-organisms, but also realized that bacteria could be killed by heat and disinfectant(消毒剂). This idea caused doctors to wash their hands and disinfect their instruments, which has saved millions of lives.
Penicillin
Antibiotics are powerful drugs that kill dangerous bacteria in our bodies that make us sick. In 1928, British Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin, which he grew in his lab. Without antibiotics, infections like strep throat could be deadly
DNA
On February 28, 1853, James Watson of the United States and Francis Crick of England made one of the greatest scientific discoveries in history. The two scientists found the structure of DNA. Our genes are made of DNA and determine how things like what color hair and eye we’ll have. In 1962, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for this work. The discovery has helped doctors understand diseases and may someday prevent some illnesses like heart disease and cancer.
X-rays
Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist, discovered X-rays in 1895. X-rays go right through some substances, like flesh and wood, but are stopped by others, such as bones and lead. This allows them to be used to see broken bones or explosives inside suitcases, which makes them useful for doctors and security officers. For this discovery, Roentgen was awarded the first-ever Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

B. It can help us to know why we are different.
C. It is useful for doctor and security officers.
D. It is used to kill dangerous bacteria in our bodies.
【4】What is common among the discoveries above?
