21、An 11-year-old boy has become a hero since his quick thinking saved two lives. Davyon Johnson helped save a choking classmate and a woman attempting to escape a fire. On Dec. 8, 2021 the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department honored Johnson for his heroics at a meeting. At the event, Undersheriff Greg Martin gave the sixth-grader a certificate naming him an honorary deputy for the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office. “We are all so proud of you, Johnson!!” wrote the sheriff’s office in a post on Facebook on Dec. 14, 2021.
The Muskogee Public Schools recognized Davyon Johnson during the meeting Tuesday. Principal Latricia Dawkins considered Johnson a hero in an interview. “He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. So he put that desire into action and immediately saved that young man,” Dawkins said, adding that Johnson “is just a kind soul and liked by students and teachers”.
The first incident happened during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap and was choked (窒息) by it after attempting to unscrew (拧开) it with his mouth. Johnson immediately ran to the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Dawkins said, “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same.
Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there. After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. “She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said.
LaToya, the boy’s mother, said, “I don’t feel surprised at my son’s actions. I’m just a proud mom.”

Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too close to me. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked(撞倒)her over.
"Move out of the way!" I shouted.
She walked away sadly. But I didn't feel like I had to apologize to her.
While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me, "While dealing with a stranger, you were polite, but with a daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You'll find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?"
I quietly went and knelt down by my daughter's bed.
"Honey, I am so sorry, "I said. "Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
She said, "I found them by the tree. I picked them because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue ones."
I tearfully replied, "Sweetie, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn't have shouted at you",
"It's okay. I love you anyway, "she said as she kissed me on my cheek.

23、Knowing about yourself not only means finding out what you’re good at and what you like, but also means discovering what you’re not good at and what you don’t like. Both help you to see your aim (目标)in life.
Although most students would be unhappy if they failed a very difficult physics examination, they have in fact learned a lot about themselves. They know that they should not become engineers or physical scientists. So failing can help a student to live a happier life if he learns something from it. They may then decide on their aims and choose the work they like and are fit for.
It is impossible to decide whether you like something until you have tried it. If you decide to play the piano, you need to take more than one lesson before knowing whether you are really interested in it or able to do well. It is not enough if you want to be a great pianist. You also have to like the hard practice and long training. If you enjoy being a great pianist but hate the work, forget it.
It’s a good plan to try as many ideas as possible when you are young. Then you will find out what your true interests are.
【1】If you say you really know yourself,_______________.
A. you know what you don’t like
B. you know what you are good at
C. you have no interest in your work
D. you’ve got the whole picture of yourself
【2】Failing can turn into something good ______________.
A. if you have aim in life
B. if your decision is fight
C. if you lead a happier life
D. if you learn something from it
【3】What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Failure is a better mirror
B. No one is fit for the job of a physical scientist
C. Success is more helpful
D. Physics can help students live a better life
24、 Anne Smith teaches science at a high school. This past spring, she gave students in her 9th-grade physic class tools and a light bulb and said, “Have a go. See if you can make the bulb light up.”
Smith sees value in letting her students experiment. She selects activities that may have more than one answer. Then she encourages students to try different approaches to solving a problem. “The point,” Smith says, “is to explore ideas and evaluate the methods tried.” In doing so, students learn to value mistakes.
Thomas Edison once wanted to make a better battery. But after working for over five months, he still didn’t succeed. He told a friend, Walter S. Mallory, that he had already done more than 9, 000 experiments. Malloy replied, “Isn’t it a shame that with the huge amount of work you have done you haven’t been able to get any results?” Edison replied with a smile, “Results! I have gotten a lot of results! I know several thousand things that won’t work.” Eventually, the inventor got the new battery to work. He patented it, too.
The means of Smith and Edison is different from the way science is carried out in most classrooms. Schools tend to focus on covering lots of topics and memorizing countless facts. Many classes rely on textbooks to give students as much information as possible. The problem with those books, explains Stuart Firestein, who studies biological sciences at Columbia University, is “they have no context”. They state the results of experiments but don’t tell us why people did them. Nor do they describe experiments that didn’t work. By focusing on successful outcomes, Firestein says, “we leave out 90 percent of science.”
When we fail, we question thoughts, opinions and ideas. Through such questions, we connect ideas and challenge reasoning. Both skills are highly valued by a scientist, says Firestein. Learning about failures also makes science more approachable. Science is not just talented people making one discovery after another. Rather, the history of science is full of mistakes and wrong turns.
【1】What is the role of mentioning Smith’s science class?
A.To tell the background knowledge.
B.To lead in the topic of the text.
C.To express the main idea of the text.
D.To recommend a new teaching method.
【2】Why does Smith select activities with open answers?
A.She wants students to learn through experiments.
B.She expects students to find out mistakes.
C.She wishes students to do many experiments.
D.She likes to lead students to their own conclusion.
【3】What does Firestein mean by saying “we leave out 90 percent of science”?
A.Textbooks should get updated regularly.
B.Schools should pay attention to science education.
C.Students should value the experiment process.
D.Science learning should include the study of failures.
【4】What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce several experts in science.
B.To encourage students to accept failures.
C.To stress the importance of failures in science.
D.To compare different experimental approaches.
