  • 21、Many years ago I lived in a western country. I got my first job in the city and I was excited to go to the office by bus!

I left home each morning in time to catch the 8: 05 bus from the main road. One morning I could see the bus coming. I could also see an elderly lady walking with a lovely dog beside her. There were some teenagers behind her.

The bus arrived and we got on. Unlike in eastern countries, only eight passengers were permitted to travel standing. I was inside the bus when the conductor called, "Only eight standing passengers! Could the last one please get off?" I saw those teenagers inside, right in front of me! I thought that it was me who now had to get off. I turned and saw the elderly lady with her dog. They were about to get off instead. I moved quickly to get in front of her. I encouraged her to stay and got off. To my surprise, when I moved past her, I realized that she was blind! Her lovely companion (同伴) was her guide dog!

Well, I finally got to the office. After the day's work, I went to the bus station near my office to make the return journey. What a pleasant surprise! The lady and her dog were there! I was really pleased because I'd get a better chance to speak with her. I opened the conversation and she recognized my Asian accent! She asked if I was the same person who helped her that morning. Amazing! From then on it was a long happy conversation.

  • 22、Genetic testing offers people insight into the types of diseases they are most likely to develop — but a new study suggests most people do not alter their lifestyles based on this information. These tests — known as genome sequencing — analyze a person's DNA, telling patients about their known risk for diseases like cancer or diabetes. But being told you’re at a higher risk for lung cancer doesn’t seem to motivate anyone to quit smoking or alcohol, this study suggests. Because of this, the scholars argue that genetic testing should be banned as a tool for improving people's health.

Today’s finding came from pulling data from 18 other studies that followed people after they received the results of genetic tests. Receiving information about genetic risks didn’t inspire people to eat differently, exercise more, or stop smoking, "Expectations have been high that giving people information about their genetic risk will empower them to change their behavior, but we have found no evidence that this is the case," study author Theresa Marteau, director of behavior and health research said in a press release.

Genetic testing, which the National Institutes of Health says costs anywhere from $100 to $2,000, has become much more accessible as commercial testing companies such as 23andMe and Sure Genomics have sprung up. These companies are not allowed to share disease risk estimates with consumers thanks to the Food and Drug Administration. However, today’s study didn’t specify whether the genetic testing were purely from academic sequencing, or if any of these companies had had a role in supplying the data.

Genetic testing doesn’t get people to change their behavior for the better, but it doesn't have any known negative effects either. Knowing the results of these tests didn't change people's depression or anxiety levels. And there's no indication that testing inspires people to pick up risky or dangerous health habits either, the study found.

Actually a genetic predisposition to a certain disease is common among people.   Some people are born weak in heart. Some are innately vulnerable in digestive system. But these most common risk factors usually don't raise a person's chances of getting the disease by a significant amount. It's possible that some of the patients in the study had substantially high disease risks based on their DNA profile, but those patients tend to be rather rare. "It’s still likely that communicating this type of information is very valuable to some people, but it’s just that there aren’t that many of those people," Zikmund-Fisher from the University of Michigan said. "The idea that providing genetic risk information is going to be transformative to everyone seems unlikely."

【1】Why did some experts suggest stopping genetic testing?

A.Genome sequencing aren’t accurate in detecting certain disease risks.

B.Genetic testing results fail to encourage people to remove bad habits.

C.Genetic testing does neither good nor harm to people’s behaviorial improvement.

D.Genetic testing results are offered by commercial testing companies.

【2】The underlined word predisposition to in the passage is closest in meaning to _____.

    A.testing on

    B.prediction about

    C.sensitivity to

    D.insight into

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Theresa Marteau believes genetic testing helps to change people’s behaviors.

B.Sure Genomics is forbidden to deliver illness risk expectations to patients.

C.Genetic testing results are totally coming from academic sequencing.

D.Genetic testing results in a way worsen the patients’ moods and emotions.

【4】It’s said that people’s unconcerned response to genetic testing doesn’t cause much harm because ______.

A.getting rid of bad life habits doesn’t do much good to people’s health

B.almost all people have certain disease risks based on genetic testing

C.providing genetic risk information interferes with the medical treatment

D.genetic testing shows few people are at a high risk of getting certain diseases

  • 23、Near-death accidents and summit failures have not slowed down mountaineer Saray N’ kusi Khumalo. The Zambia-born mother of two holds a corporate job, hosts a podcast, has climbed some of the tallest mountains around the world, and still has the time to run a non- profit organization that focuses on education in Africa.

“My grandfather always used to say, ‘if you don’t live a life of service, that’s a life wasted, ” she said. In 2013, she founded Summits With A Purpose in South Africa. With every climb, she raises funds to help build schools and libraries. Khumalo is not going to just climb and take a selfie. She is going to climb and then make a difference.

Not long after her first-ever summit, she turned her eyes toward the world’s tallest peak: Mt. Qomolangma, located in the Himalayas. The first three attempts were tough and heart-breaking for Khumalo: She experienced everything from natural disasters to losing consciousness in the “death zone”, Qomolangma’s top stretch over 8, 000 meters above sea level, where oxygen is dangerously low.

On May 16, 2019 —her fourth bid —she succeeded, becoming the first Black African woman to reach the summit. In total, only eight of the 4,000 people who’ve ever summited Qomolangma are Black.

Khumalo is humbled by what she’s achieved so far, but she notes, “I don’t think that I’ve broken those stereotypes yet; there’s still a lot more work to be done,” adding that representation should extend beyond the mountain tops, too.

“It’s not just about Qomolangma; it is a gift that we need to leave for the next generation wherever we are,” she says, calling on her peers to step outside their comfort zone to show that Black people belong in all spaces.

【1】What can we know about Khumalo from paragraph 1?

    A.She suffers from injuries.

    B.She is energetic.

    C.She loves her family.

    D.She is struggling with life.

【2】Why did she found Summits With A Purpose?

    A.To make herself rich.

    B.To fulfill her grandfather’s wish.

C.To raise funds for her climbing.

D.To collect money for African education.

【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Her life experiences.

    B.The success of her climbing.

    C.The hardship in climbing.

D.The conditions of the Qomolangma’s top.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To introduce a mountaineer pioneer.

B.To show a respect for mountaineers.

C.To tell the history of mountain climbing.

D.To attract more people to conquer Mt. Qomolangma.

  • 24、   On the weekend, you are in a crowded bar, trying to talk to a friend. The background noise forces up the volume of your own conversation, making you speak in louder, shorter bursts to be understood. “Do you want another beer?” “What?” “More beer?” “What?” “Beer?” “Yes.”

If it’s annoying to talk like that for a few hours on the weekend, imagine what it would be like to do it almost every day. That’s the situation that birds living near roads find themselves in.

In a study, biologist recorded bird songs in Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. They found that birds especial the Eastern Wood-Pewee changed the way they sang when traffic rushed along on nearby roads.

When trying to sing as a track of traffic noise played in the background, the birds sang in shorter bursts, with less variation in frequencies, and a smaller bandwidth (带宽), attempting to make their voices heard over the noise. Unfortunately while they might be more easily heard over the traffic noise, other birds don’t seem to pay as much attention to the changed song whether it’s a mating call or a male defending its land.

But it’s not a permanent change. Just like you don’t yell at bar volumes over a Sunday dinner with your family, birds don’t keep to those volume and tone changes when the traffic noise disappears.

Rock Creek Park offers an interesting setting to the researchers studying this effect. The park closes down a main street, Beech Drive, on weekends from 7 am Saturday to 7 pm Sunday and only allows bikers and joggers to take over, giving the birds a break in the process.

During those times, the birds return to their song, which the authors said might provide a way forward for conservationists looking to preserve a bird population’s habitat.

While shutting down roads permanently would be impossible, the authors suggest that even short, temporary shutdowns should help songbirds find their voice again.

【1】Why does the author describe the bar?

    A.To recommend it to people.

B.To introduce the culture of beer.

C.To prove its popularity with drinkers.

D.To show the influence of noise on birds.

【2】How does the Eastern Wood-Pewee sing in a noisy background?

A.They sing for a longer time.

B.They give a higher or lower call.

C.They keep the frequency almost the same.

D.They enlarge their bandwidth of singing.

【3】What will happen when birds change their way of singing?

A.They are often ignored by other birds.

B.They are mistaken for seeking a mate.

C.They are frightening away the enemies.

D.They are showing anger at human noise.

【4】Why is Beach Drive closed down on weekends?

A.To find the way of shutting down road permanently.

B.To study the birds’ volume and tone changes.

C.To keep birds away from the dangerous area.

D.To provide people with a safe place
