二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What3words

This free download is one of a growing number of smartphone apps that could mean the difference between life and death. What3Words divides the world into 3x3 metre squares, giving each one a unique combination (组合) of three words. This allows emergency services—or anyone else you give the location to—to reach you. It is used by the vast majority of emergency services in the UK, not to mention other control centres around the world, and has been praised for saving thousands of lives.

    WhatsApp

Lots of us use WhatsApp for messaging and calling, but did you know it also has a Live Location feature that can let a loved one know where you are in case you’re in danger? You simply press the + key in a chat, select “Location”, and then press “Share Live Location”, which enables anyone in the chat to see your location in real time for the period you choose.

    SkinVision

You will have to pay for this digital skin check app, when necessary or needed, but with about fifth of skin cancers going undiagnosed (未经诊断) during lockdown, it could be well worth it. You simply take a photo of any strange-lookingpart of the skin with your phone and you’ll then receive a risk indication (风险迹象) within 30 seconds. This might include a recommendation to see a doctor. But don’t rely on an app to comfort you—if you’re worried about a skin problem, go to your doctor.

    Stay Alive

With mental health problems on the increase, not helped by the pandemic (大流行病), this suicide (自杀) prevention app could be extremely helpful. Developed by Grassroots Suicide Prevention, it offers a wealth of resources, ranging from suggestions for staying at home when you feel extremely lonely and sad, to breathing exercises, to direct links to national and local crisis resources.

    St John Ambulance First Aid

An app like this is more useful for saving someone else’s life than your own, but it’s a must-have on your smartphone. It gives advice in dealing with emergencies, including choking, allergic reactions and performing CPR. You don’t have to have an Internet connection in order to use it.

  • 22、On Tuesday, there will be a tiny salt shaker(小盐瓶) symbol on menus in some restaurants in New York City. It warns certain meals are high in sodium. The first US city is taking the step to fight against heart disease and stroke(中风).

Any menu item with more than 2.3 grams of sodium in it must have the emblem of a salt shaker in a black triangle. Many scientists give us the advice: A person shouldn’t eat more sodium than the daily limit every day, which equals about one teaspoon of salt.

“It’s not hard to get 2.3 grams of sodium into your mouth,” said Dr Howard Weintraub from New York University Langone Center(预防中心). A study found New Yorkers eat more than 3,200 mg of sodium each day on average(平均), the health department said.

For most Americans, eating in the restaurants such as Chipotle(小辣椒) and Subway(赛百味)is thought to be more healthy. The new menu symbol may be an eye-opener for people who go to eat in these restaurants. Until Tuesday, they may haven’t noticed that there is 2,790 mg sodium in a Chipotle loaded chicken burrito(双层鸡肉卷). And a foot-long spicy Italian sub(香辣三明)has 2,980 mg sodium in Subway.

Getting New Yorkers to start watching their sodium intake is a first step. And people should do more to improve their health. “Things are not going to work out great if all you do is just not eat salt,” Weintraub said. “But maybe, just maybe, they’ll start to watch how much they eat, maybe they will get off the subway a stop earlier and walk, instead of taking the elevator, they will walk two flights, there will be some weight loss.”

1What’s the symbol on the menus like?

    A. A white bottle in the red circle.

    B. A tiny salt shaker in a black triangle.

    C. A capital letter P in a yellow circle.

    D. A coffee cup in a white triangle

2A Chipotle loaded chicken burrito has ________ sodium more than the daily limit.

    A. 490 mg   B. 900 mg

    C. 2,790 mg   D. 3,200 mg

3We can infer from the passage that __________.

    A. all restaurants across the US will use the salt shaker symbol

    B. New Yorkers eat one teaspoon of salt each day on average

    C. eating too much salt can cause heart disease and stroke

    D. New York will ban (禁止) smoking in public places

4The underlined word “eye-opener” in the passage probably means “__________”.

    A. 喜悦   B. 愤怒

    C. 失望   D. 震惊

5According to Weintraub, which is a healthy life style?

    A. People should eat no salt when they are old.

    B. Jim takes the elevator up and down.

    C. Lucy climbs a long flight of stairs.

    D. We should eat meals which are high in sodium.

  • 23、If you dream of a world where neighbors share with each other and you don't have to spend money at a store every time you need something, then your local Buy Nothing Group might be the perfect fit. This clever idea began in July 2013, when two friends, Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark, from. Bainbridge Island, Washington, wanted to try something new. They liked the idea of developing a local gift economy as a way to challenge the consumerist mindset and reconnect neighbors. The Buy Nothing Project has grown rapidly since then, with 6,000 groups now in 44 countries.

The basic idea is that anyone can ask for what they need and anyone can give it. The official rules are simple: “Post anything you'd like to give away, lend, or share among neighbors. Ask for anything you'd like to receive for free or borrow. Keep it legal. No buying or selling, no trades, we're strictly a gift economy.”

All participants have equal standing. Gifts and requests can be large or small, items or services (though they must be legal). Lending and borrowing are allowed, too. Things must be given freely, with no expectation of a gift in return. There are no rules about how to post, though people are encouraged to share personal stories about themselves, their gifts and requests, as this helps to build community.

When asked why the Buy Nothing Project has been met with such enthusiasm, the founders suggest it's because of the human desire to feel connected with others around us. Besides, this is truly a great way to take a stand against over-consumption, to clear out our homes, to save items from landfill and prolong their lifespan (寿命), and to keep valuable resources in the ground. The more sharing and reusing we can do, the better off we'll all be for both climate and human well-being.

【1】What has made the Buy Nothing Project grow rapidly?

A.The need to build social ties.

    B.The consumerist mindset.

C.The desire to boost local economy.

    D.The strong sense of community.

【2】Which of the following agrees with the rules?

    A.Sharing others' stories.

B.Asking for a gift in return.

    C.Lending or borrowing legal items.

    D.Trading with the neighbors.

【3】What's the advantage of the project?

    A.It fuels local consumption.

B.It reduces the waste of resources.

    C.It extends people's lifespan.

D.It changes the climate of the earth.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To promote the idea of recycling.

B.To introduce the Buy Nothing Project.

C.To tell stories about two environmentalists.

D.To persuade people to make friends in the community.

  • 24、For the most part, you are probably only exposed to the music that is played on your favorite radio stations and TV shows, music Web sites, or the music that your friends and family members enjoy. While you probably know a lot about your favorite type of music, it can be a rewarding experience to enlarge your horizons (眼界), discovering artists and types of music that you’re not familiar with. Who knows, you might discover you like certain types of music you never even considered.

Have you ever wondered about the history and influences of your favorite types of music? For example, did you know that rock ’n’ roll originated (起源) from the blues, and that the blues began as a form of musical expression for African Americans during slavery(奴隶制度)? Did you know that most hip-hop is heavily influenced by early rhythm blues and jazz?

There are many fun ways to learn about different musical styles and their historical roots. For example, if you like hip-hop, listen to some of your favorite CDs and take note of the samples the performers used to create the songs. There is a possibility that the artist used parts of older songs to create the music. You can go to the library or online to learn more about the artists and listen to more of their music by checking out CDs from the library or downloading songs online for a small fee.

You can learn so much about culture and history just by paying attention to different types of music and what is being expressed in the songs. There are so many different styles of music to learn about, and you owe (欠) it to yourself to make an effort to listen to and learn about them.

【1】The main topic of this passage is _______.

    A. creating music

    B. performing music

    C. enjoying your favorite music

    D. learning about music

2What music did African Americans use to express their feelings of being slaves?

    A. Rock ’n’ roll. B. The blues.

    C. Hip-hop. D. Jazz.

3How can you learn about culture and history through music?

    A. By writing down the names of the music

    B. By creating music from older songs yourself.

    C. By caring about what is being expressed in music.

    D. By keeping a record of fees after downloading songs online.

4By saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, the author probably means that _______.

    A. you should try harder to learn about music

    B. you should return something to music

    C. you should borrow music CDs from others

    D. you should buy music CDs yourself
