  • 21、“Selfie” (自拍) joins ranks of dictionary words.

In 2002, an Australian man went to his friend’s 21st birthday party. He got drunk, tripped on some steps and cut his lip. He took a picture of his injuries and shared it with his friends on an online forum. “And sorry about the focus,” he wrote, “it was a selfie.” That was the first recorded use of the word “selfie”, according to linguistic experts at Oxford Dictionaries.

On Nov 19, Oxford Dictionaries declared “selfie” Word of the Year for 2013, in honor of the term having taken over the world thanks to millions of smart phone self-portraits and the resulting shares on social media.

So what does the choice of the word say about our culture? Mary Elizabeth Williams, writing in Salon magazine, says the word reminds us that contemporary culture is defined by our narcissism(自恋).Megan Jackson from a local newspaper points out a selfie may only focus on appearance.

Selfies invite judgment based on appearance alone. What kind of cultural influence does this have on women? Erin Gloria Ryan on Jezebel says selfies teach young woman to obsess over their appearance and judge themselves on the basis of beauty rather than accomplishments. “They’re a reflection of the warped way we teach girls to see themselves as decorative,” said Ryan.

In Slate magazine, Rachel Simmons has the opposite view. She argues that selfies are an example of young women promoting themselves and taking control of their own self-presentation. Think of each one, she says, as “a tiny pulse of girl pride —a shout-out to the self”.

【1】 Which of the following is true about the first use of “selfie”?

    A. The Australian man created it to celebrate his friend’s 21st birthday.

    B. The Australian man created by chance when he got drunk and shared his photo online.

    C. The Oxford Dictionary used it to thank the creation of smart phone.

    D. The social media were so advanced that they made the word transmitted.

【2】The underlined word “tripped” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.

    A. traveled B. stepped lightly

    C. fell down   D. made mistakes

【3】Who holds a positive opinion towards selfie in the life of women?

    A. Mary Elizabeth.   B. Megan Jackson.

    C. Erin Gloria Ryan.   D. Rachel Simmons.

【4】The text is mainly concerned with ________.

    A. the introduction of the word “selfie”

    B. the choice of the word “selfie”

    C. the history of the word “selfie”

    D. the characteristics of the word “selfie”

  • 23、   I arrived late one night on a business trip, so I decided to have dinner in the hotel I stayed in. As I was finishing my meal, an elderly couple came in. They were holding hands and had lovely smiles on their faces. They sat three tables from me. I was amazed at the love they showed for each other. It struck me because it was shortly after ending a 20-year marriage and I still had pain in my heart.

My waiter was also their waiter. As I paid my bill, I asked what their bill was. He informed me, and I gave him $40 to pay their bill. He asked if I knew them. I told him “No, I just wanted to repay them for the love that they were showing to each other, ” and then I left.

The next day I entered the restaurant again. After I had been seated, the waiter who served me the night before told me that the strangest thing happened after I left the restaurant. When the elderly couple went to pay for their meal, they were informed that it had been paid. The waiter just retold them what I said. They were amazed. They looked around, asked for the bill of two young couples seated together, paid their bill and left.

I smiled and began to order my meal. About 45 minutes later, I finished my meal and was about to head out, but my waiter was nowhere to be found. I explained to the hostess that I needed to pay for my meal and hurry to the airport. She smiled and explained that I would not have to pay, because she felt she should pay my bill due to the joy brought to the faces of the elderly couple and the amazement of the young couples.

When I told her that she didn't have to do that she said with a smile “Love begets Love.”

1Why was the writer deeply touched by the love of an elderly couple?

A.Because he did not have heart pain cured soon after divorce.

B.Because he has been familiar with them.

    C.Because he was warm-hearted.

D.Because he was amazed at the love of others.

2The hostess paid the writer's bill because______

A.She only felt like paying for the love of couples.

B.She was ready to help people in need.

C.She was glad to pass the love.

D.She was required to pay the bill.

3What can be learned from the story?

A.The writer did it to prove his generosity.

B.The young couples paid the bill of the elderly couple.

C.The writer was reminded to pay his own bill in time.

D.The love is produced, it can be passed.

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Pain Past Is Pleasure

  • 24、Air-crash investigators (空难调查员) Larry Vance and Anthony Brickhouse have details from certain jobs rooted in their memories. They could tell exact dates, locations, and fight numbers effortlessly Vance’s “big one” is Swiss Air Flight 11 in 1998. He was put in the position of dealing with all the families from very early on, many of whom held the hope that their relatives could have survived. All 229 passengers and crew died. Burning fabric; burning flesh. The smell catches in your throat, and stays in your mind long after you’ve left the scene. Investigations can take anywhere from days to years.

What can affect people in these jobs is the ongoing emotional damage, said Vivien Lee, a psychologist. But mental health assistance is often lacking within the industry. Evidence suggests that investigators, like first responders, can suffer from negative emotional effects, including frequent thoughts and PTSD (创伤后应激障碍) .

“One emotion of losing relatives is anger,” Brickhouse reflected. “And they’re looking to you to figure out what happened to their loved ones.” Depending on the size of the crash, that anger can come alongside a lot of international media attention.

But more often, Vance said, the questions he faces are perhaps even tougher to answer than what caused the crash. “How did my loved one die? What were they felling? What were they seeing?” And tougher still: “Were they suffering?”

Listening to the black box recordings takes an emotional damage. He said it was more unbearable by knowing that he’s listening to the final minutes of someone’s life. Some people in his industry listen to a black box recording once and choose to never do it again, he said.

The knowledge that they’re doing an essential job can make the tougher aspects of the work a little easier. “The end result of your work is that you try to make the world a safer place, so that this doesn’t happen to somebody else,” Vance said.

【1】What can be inferred about the air-crash investigators?

    A.They often get throat problems.

    B.They must have good memories.

    C.They experienced the same accident.

D.They have to deal with many difficulties.

【2】What should be done to help the air-crash investigators?

    A.Helping them avoid air crashes.

    B.Sending first respondents with them.

    C.Offering qualified psychologists.

    D.Teaching them how to communicate.

【3】What is the most difficult part in Vance’s job?

    A.Finding the black box.

    B.Answering the questions.

    C.Smelling the burning things.

D.Investigating the cause of the crash.

【4】Which word can be used to describe the air-crash investigators?

    A.Generous.

    B.Easy-going.

    C.Self-giving.

    D.Independent.
