21、Dear mum and dad,
I'm writing this letter to you from the centre of Australia. At the moment we're staying near Uluru—that's the aboriginal (土著的) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometres long and 384 metres high. The colours of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a centre of aboriginal culture.
The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.
Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback (澳大利亚的内地) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.
The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down...
Finally, later this evening, we're taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home. It's been a fantastic trip!
Tony

22、
For many people in North America, the last week was the coldest of the year. To help some poor people keep warm, some kind people tied(系) scarves to trees in big cities for people in need.
“I AM NOT LOST!” read a note on a scarf tied to a tree in Wilmington, “If you need this to stay warm, please take it. It is yours. Be warm, and do something to help someone else today if you can.”
The member of a teenage soccer team put many of the scarves around Wilmington. They bought around 300 scarves for poor persons and left them on the Bloomsday runner statues(雕塑) in Riverfront Park with notes like the one above.
A group of villagers also left their scarves all over the cities. “The scarves get right to the people who want them,” said Wendy Grahl, one of the villagers, “If you’re poor and it’s 30 below, a scarf is going to be welcome.”
“I’ve seen a lot of bad things happen, but I’ve seen a lot of good people that care for others,” said Ed, a homeless man who took one of the team’s scarves.

23、 My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said: “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business (生意) made me feel proud (骄傲) and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said seriously, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.
In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you only think about hard work and money, answered.

24、 Many people like traveling. We have some ways of traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. In the past, when people wanted to go to a far place, they needed a month or more to get there. But now, people can get to the far place in one day by plane.
Traveling by train is slower than by plane, but you can see many beautiful places when you travel through. Modern (现代的) trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They even make the long journey happy. Because people get to a far place quickly by plane or train, they usually take a train or a plane when they travel on business.
Some people prefer to travel by sea. You can visit many other countries or different parts of your country. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. They can make their own timetable. They can travel seven or eight hundred kilometers in a day, just as they like. They can stop if there is something interesting.
