21、 American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many countries do so, too. It is a very good habit. You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table, when someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Thank you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters.
“ Excuse me ” is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite(礼貌) to break others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you begin to cough or make any noise before others.
Let’s learn to say “ Thank you” and “Excuse me”.

22、Every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to the flight mode—it’s for “safety reasons”.
But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our phones off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference to the aircraft’s radios. Pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same noise you’ll be familiar with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted. “This sound does not affect safety, but is annoying for sure.” Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t dangerous, it isn’t still a good idea.
When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect (连接) to a cell tower that deals with all calls within an 80-kilometer radius (范围). As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers.
As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, there shouldn’t be too many “handoffs (信号转移)”; people shouldn’t travel faster than cars and phone users should be close to the ground.
However, during the flight, telephone calls cannot meet any of the conditions above. And even worse, our cellphones would stop working.
But now things are beginning to change. If we still can’t speak during a flight, we can use other phone functions (功能). For example, Airbus A330 of Emirates Airline has in-flight WiFi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely.

23、 Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants. Sometimes, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it means something that is not yet finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has little experience as he is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today — a person who is new in a job.
About one hundred years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the west of America. People used it to describe a man if he came from one of the big cities in the east. The greenhorn didn’t have the skills to live in the hard country. Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). This comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution is the name given to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains some years ago. It was the result of hard work by scientists who had green thumbs. Green is also the color used to describe the feeling — Jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster(怪兽) is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play Othello. It means the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants to get. In most places in the world, the color green is one of the traffic lights. Green has so many different meanings that we should know more to understand it better.

24、 A father and his son went to a kite-flying festival. The son was happy when he saw the sky filled with colorful kites. He wanted to fly a kite, too. The father then bought a kite for his son.
The son started to fly the kite. Soon it was high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, "Dad, it seems that the string(线) is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?" The father cut the string off the reel(线轴). The kite started to go higher. This made the little boy happy.
But then, the kite started to come down. It soon fell to the ground. The son was surprised to see this. He asked his father, "I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?"
The father explained, "The string was not stopping the kite from going higher, but was helping it stay in the sky. You use the string to help the kite go up in the right direction. But when you cut the string, it could no longer support(支持) the kite."
