六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、(题文)Ivan Fletcher loves crazy inventions. He writes a weekly magazine column(专栏)called “Unbelievable Inventions”. “One of my favourite inventions is the Butter Stick. It looks like a glue, but it's butter. You spread it on the bread without using a knife.” He says. “Another cool invention is Duster Slippers for pets. You put these special shoes on your dog or cat. As the animal runs around your house, it collects dust from the floor. Very useful!”A lot of these inventions come from Japan—the home of the crazy invention.

Ivan says that the British also invent a lot of crazy things. “The other day I found an invention called a Cat Seat Saver,” he says. “The Cat Saver looks exactly like a sleeping cat—but it isn't real. You put it on your seat if you have to go to the restroom. No one will sit in your seat because they think there's a sleeping cat on it. Pretty cool!”

However, does anyone buy these things? Yes. Lucy Wade from the shopping website crazygadgets.com says that their customers are young, professional people.

“They buy these small things mostly for fun.” She says. “They are usually looking for a present for a friend's birthday or a silly gift for someone they work with.” If you have an idea for an amazing invention, send it to Lucy at lucyw@crazygagets.com.

  • 23、   Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology (技术) will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

However, scientists are also working on other systems (系统). Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct at present. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.

In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!

1How does the eye-recognition program work?

A.You write your number. B.You show your ID card.

C.You say your name. D.You look at the machine.

2How many ways will machines be able to know you soon?

    A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Five.

3Why can the program be up to 94% correct?

A.Because eyes never change. B.Because hands or fingers can get dirty.

C.Because people like the idea of the program. D.Because the program is widely used around the world.

4Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The program is being tested in Japan.

B.Machines with other systems can also tell who you are.

C.91% of people like the idea of the program.

D.Computers can remember you by looking at your clothes.

5What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Introduction to some kinds of programs.

    B.Introduction to the eye-recognition program.

C.The way how the eye-recognition program works.

D.The places where the eye-recognition program is tested.

  • 24、Some people always ask me why I like helping others. I’ll say I’m learning kindness from my father.

One day when I was twelve, I went with my father to his work place. While I was running around, I saw a poor woman with a child in her arms standing outside, crying a lot. She was thin and looked pale. My father went out and asked her to come in. He gave her some water and then asked what was wrong.

The woman said that her husband died months ago and that she didn’t have anyone else in her family who could help her. She did some manual labor for a living. But she was ill those days and was unable to go to work. So she had nothing to eat. While telling the story, she started crying again. My father and I were deeply moved by her story.

We got some food for her and her baby. My father then took them to the nearest hospital, because neither the mother nor the child seemed to be very well. On the way, my father bought her a small bag of flour. He also gave her some money before we left her. The lady was so grateful.
