Google is a company's name, but it has also grown into a verb that means, "to do an Internet search." Now everyone and their grandma know what it means to Google it. You know that you're doing something big when your company name becomes a verb.
Google wasn't the first company to invent their product. Lycos released their search engine in 1993. Yahoo! came out in 1994. AltaVista began serving results in 1995. Google did not come out until 1998. That is a major head start in the fast moving world of tech. So how did Google overtake(超过)their competitors who had such huge leads in time and money? Maybe one good idea made all the difference.
There are millions of sites on the Internet. How does a search engine know which ones are relevant to your search? This is a question that great minds have been working on for decades. To understand how Google changed the game, you need to know how search engines worked in 1998. Back then most websites looked at the words in your query(查询).They counted how many times those words appeared on each page. Then they might return pages where the words in your query appeared the most. This system did not work well and people often had to click through pages of results to find what they wanted.
Google was the first search engine that began considering links. Links are those blue underlined words that take you to other pages when you click on them. Larry Page, cofounder of Google, believed that meaningful data could be drawn from how those links connect. He was right. Google's search results were much better than their rivals'(对手).They would soon become the world's most used search engine.
It wasn't just the great search results that led to Google becoming so well liked. It also had to do with the way that they presented their product. The home pages of most other search engines were filled with all kinds of things. But Google's homepage was, and still is, clean. There's nothing on it but the logo, the search box, and a few links. In fact, when they were first testing it, users would wait at the home page and not do anything. When asked why, they said that they were "waiting for the rest of the page to load". But the fresh design grew on people once they got used to it.
These days Google has its hands in everything from self-driving cars to helping humans live longer. Though they have many other popular products, they will always be best known for their search engine. Not only is Google search engine a fantastic product, it is a standing example that one good idea(and a lot of hard work)can change the world.

In ancient(古代的) China, most kids never got a chance to go to school. They had to plant rice and vegetables, feed chickens or take care of their little brothers or sisters.
But if you were a boy, your father could spare you from the fields and send you to school. If there wasn’t a school in your village, you might have to live with your relatives or strangers in a town. Luckily, beginning in the Han dynasty, the school fees(费用) were paid by the emperor(皇帝). Boys worked very hard in school, because the school prepared them for the government tests. And whoever scored highly in the tests could get a good job.
Boys usually started school when they were about six years old. Elementary schools were very small with only one teacher for the whole school. Boys went to school every day, with no weekends, from about 6:00 in the morning to about 4:00 in the afternoon. There weren’t any Maths or science lessons. 23、We talk every day. When we have good news, we like to share it with our good friends and when something terrible happens, we will let others know soon. But do you know that a tree can talk and share news?It sounds strange, but it’s true that some trees can also communicate with each other. Of course, no tree moves lips and says words just as people do.
Willow trees (柳树) are the best-known of these trees. When insects (昆虫) begin eating a willow tree, the tree gives out a special smell at once. This smell tells the other willow trees that insects are coming near. All of them quickly make a chemical (化学物质) in their leaves. This chemical is bad for the insects. The insects do not like it and they fly away soon. In this way, the willow trees keep themselves away from the insects.
Next time when you take a walk near the trees, maybe the trees are “talking” to each other quietly. And when someone says that trees cannot “talk”, please tell them that even trees can “talk” to each other, too.

24、 Monarch butterflies from eastern Canada make the most amazing journey in the insect world. Each year, this butterfly travels about 3, 000 miles to its winter home in central Mexico. How can it fly so far? And why does it make this long and dangerous trip? Scientists still don’t have an answer.
For many years, people in Mexico wondered where the orange and-black butterflies came from every winter. Then, in 1937, a scientist started to follow and study the butterflies. For the next 20 years, he discovered that one butterfly started its journey in Canada. Four months later, it arrived in Mexico.
The length of the butterflies’ trip is only one part of the mystery. Another amazing thing is that the butterflies always return to the same area in central Mexico.
How do the butterflies find their way back to the same place? This is an interesting question because only every fourth generation(代) makes the trip south. In other words, the butterfly that travels to Mexico this year is the great great-grandchild of the butterfly that traveled there last year.
Each year, four generations of a Monarch butterfly family are born. Each generation of the family has a very different life. The first generation is born in the south in late April. It slowly moves north, reproduces(繁衍), and then dies. Each of these generations of butterflies lives for only two or five weeks. In the autumn, the fourth generation of butterflies is born. This generation has a much longer life. It lives for about eight months. This generation of butterflies makes the amazing journey back to the winter there, and in the spring they reproduce and then die. Their offspring will be the first generation of the next circle of life.
Today, people are still studying the Monarch butterfly. But they are not clear about everything.
