六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、An old man died and left his son a lot of money. But the son was a foolish(傻的)young man, and he quickly spent all the money, so that soon he had nothing left. Of course, when that happened, all his friends left him. When he was quite poor and alone, he went to see Mr smith, who was a kind, clever old man and often helped people when they had troubles.

“My money has finished and my friends have gone,” said the young man. “What will happen to me now?”

"Don't worry, young man," answered Mr smith, "Everything will soon be all right again. Wait, and you will soon feel much happier."

The young man was very glad. "Am I going to get rich again then?" he asked Mr smith.

"No, I didn't mean that, "said the old man. "I meant that you would soon get used to(习惯于)being poor and to having no friends.”

  • 22、   If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory(记忆) works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write them down in a small notebook and they have to remember things. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.

    1Someone can't have a good memory if ________.

    A.his parents haven't a good memory B.he doesn't use his memory often

C.he can't read or write D.he doesn't use his arms or legs for some time

2If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________.

A.you can't use them any more B.they will become stronger

C.they become weak but they slowly become strong again D.they become weak and won't become strong until you use them again

3What does the underlined word “it” mean?

A.his arms and legs are weak B.parents' arms and legs are weak

C.he has a poor memory D.he has a good memory

4The writer of this passage wants to tell us ________.

A.how to use our arms or legs B.how to read and write

C.how to have a good memory D.how to learn from the people

  • 24、“Did you see that?” Joe said to his friend Bill. “You play basketball so well!”

Bill caught the basketball and threw it again. The ball flew into the net.

“But I can’t when I’m in a real game,” Bill said unhappily.

Bill was right. He played much better when he was having fun with Joe in the school playground than he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd.

“Maybe you just need to practise more,” Joe said.

“But I practise all the time with you! I just can’t play well when people are watching me,” Bill said.

“You play well when I’m watching.”

“That’s because I’ve known you since we were five years old. I’m just not comfortable playing when other people are around.”

Joe understood, but he also had an idea.

The next day Joe and Bill met in the school playground again to practise. After a few minutes, Joe said to his friend, “Practise without me. I’ll be back in a minute.”

Joe hurried through the school building, gathering (召集) a group of people.

When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help. Joe told the group to stay quiet. Bill made five baskets in a row (连续) without noticing the people standing behind him.

“Hey, Bill!” Joe called out finally. Bill turned. A look of surprise came over his face.

“I just wanted to show you that you could play well with people watching you,” Joe said. “Now you’ll have nothing to worry about for the next game.”

    【1】Why was Bill unhappy?

A.His team lost too many games.
