That didn’t sound too bad. She cleaned her teeth at home already. She liked to smile. She wanted clean teeth and didn’t want rotten teeth. Pictures and cleaning sounded OK with her.

The dentist was a kind, old man. He smiled and Tammy sat in a special chair. There were lots of lights and tools (工具). It didn’t make her comfortable when she opened her mouth. He looked really closely. He cleaned her teeth carefully and then took pictures of her teeth. Then she was done.

23、
Painful for Your Ears
Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The human ear has three different parts. The outer ear is the part you can see. The middle ear and inner ear are inside your head. That doesn't mean those parts can't be hurt. They can be harmed by loud noises. Over one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noise for long periods of time, said WHO. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.
Sounds are measured in decibels (dB分贝). A whisper is 30 dB. A friend talking is about 60 dB. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB. The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (探测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
What can be done to protect your hearing? Use noise-canceling (降噪) headphones. These headphones get rid of background noise. You don't need to turn up the volume as much. Keep your device volume at 50 to 60 percent. Limit daily use of headphones. Listen to sound on your mobile devices for a maximum of one hour per day.
The less loud noise you hear, the better!

A.people love to listen to loud music
B.people don't always know how loud their music is

D.it's reasonable to listen to loud music in some places
【3】The writer probably agrees that _______.
A.people have to wear headphones while walking on a busy road
B.listening to music on TV is better for hearing than on mobile devices
C.young people should set a time limit of listening to music at loud volumes
D.wearing noise-canceling headphones can stop the outer ears being harmed
24、 A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists keep pets, build model ships, watch birds, climb mountains, grow flowers, fish, ski, skate and swim. Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies, and from coins to stamps.
People have hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even make some money by following a hobby. Hobbies help people relax after hard work, and provide a balance(平衡)between work and play. Hobbies also offer more interesting activities for persons who have retired(退休). Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow an interesting hobby.
Hobbies can help a person’s mental(精神的)and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are helpful for patients to recover(恢复)from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give patients something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves.
In early years, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who were free enjoyed hobbies.
People today have more time than before for hobbies. Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spend on their jobs. More people are retiring than before at an earlier age. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their free hours.
