22、The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means (工具). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people have, the more pollution comes. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was polluted in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.
Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by sulfur dioxide (SO2) is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must pay attention to the rise in pollution at the same time.

23、C
One morning on my way to school, I had just seated myself on the bus when suddenly a few peasant-workers got on the bus with big bags, they rushed and shouted to seek the empty seats. One of them just sat next to me, putting his bag on the ground of the bus. The dirty bag touched my new white shoes. I stood up at once and kept me away from those peasant-workers and their big bags.
After class I told my unpleasant experience to my friends, they almost held the same feeling that even in the streets they would keep away from those peasant-workers and their big bags. Then some of us raised a question why they always carried big bags over their shoulders while a little amount of money could buy many cheap things that they needed.
What on earth were there in their big bags? We could only keep our curiosity but had no chance to see inside.
Then one day a chance came when I passed a building site with my friends after school, we saw a group of peasant -workers rushed out the half -finished building to a small bus, they all carried big bags as usual. Suddenly, an old peasant -worker fell on the ground. His bag flew off and hit the ground. The bag broke due to its weight and poor quality, and what were inside the bag separated everywhere. The sight drew the passengers’ attention at once especially ours. We gathered over to see the incident, regardless of the embarrass feeling of the old man.
The poor old man caught a big colorful sharpener(卷笔刀)the first time and sat on the ground, his legs were too weak to support his body because he had fallen down heavily, but he cleaned the sharpener carefully with his clothes, checking whether there was something wrong with it. It was clear that the beautiful sharpener was bought for his grandchild. We were a little moved and we couldn’t help picking up other things on the ground for the old man. A few clothes caught our eyes. They had been washed clean and folded neatly though they were a little old. We quickly gathered all his belongs and took them to the small bus with him.
On our way back, I suddenly imaged the scene when the old peasant-worker got home, his family rushed out to welcome him. Now it is clear what’s in the peasants’ big bags. They carry the worry, miss and warmth out but bring the great hope back.
【1】How did the writer feel when he stood up on the bus?
A. unhappy B. satisfied C. interested D. worried
【2】Why did the old man catch the sharpener first?
A. Because it was the most expensive. B. Because it was very close to him.

A. they had no time to buy things
B. they liked the things from their home
C. they wanted to save as much money as possible
D. the bags were big enough to carry all the things
【4】We can infer(推断)from the passage that the writer and his friends________.
A. had pity on the peasant-workers from the beginning
B. understood what the bags really meant to the peasant-workers
C. still looked down on the peasant-workers
D. gathered over in order to help the old man
24、Dear Simon,
I am glad to know that you have joined your school reading club. I enjoy reading, too. I want to introduce to you my favorite novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (《查理和巧克力工厂》).
The novel tells the story of a boy named Charlie Bucket and his adventures (冒险经历) in Mr. Wonka's chocolate factory. The Bucket family is very poor. Charlie loves Wonka chocolate bars. But he only receives one chocolate bar a year on his birthday.
One day, Mr. Wonka decides to open up his factory to five lucky children. They can find golden tickets in their Wonka chocolate bars. On his birthday, Charlie's family all hope that his chocolate bar will contain a golden ticket. But sadly, it doesn't. Three days later, Charlie finds a coin on the ground. He buys some chocolate bars with it. To his great surprise, he finds a golden ticket!
Charlie goes to the factory with his grandfather. It is an amazing place. There is even a chocolate river! One by one, the other four children on the tour cause trouble. They are all taken away. Charlie is the only child who doesn't cause any trouble. Mr. Wonka tells him that he wins the contest.
Do you know what Charlie wins? You will find the answer in the novel. Do share your feelings about the story with me when you finish reading it. I'm looking forward to your reply. I hope you will like this novel.
With love,
Carl

25、Just how well do you read? You may find this question difficult to answer. If a friend asks how tall you are, you may hand him a r【1】 and tell him to measure you. But you can’t measure your reading ability with a ruler.
Here is one way to j【2】 your reading ability. Take from your desk the book you are using this year — the textbooks needed for English, math and science. Read a few paragraphs from each textbook. Then ask y【3】 these questions. Do I read these books easily? Is it difficult for me to get the information from these books? Am I struggling (挣扎) through each book — looking at each word again and again, but still not able to understand w【4】 the words mean? Most people like you need to make their reading b【5】. The fifth grade pupil knows that the textbooks for the sixth grade will be more difficult than those he is using now. The middle school student knows that he must prepare to read books written for high school boys and girls.
The high school student knows that he must prepare to read c【6】 texts. And so it goes. Most people say, “I want to help myself.”
There is always one good rule that you should follow. You should keep your mind on all you are doing. A car may run through a stop light because the c【7】 driver is thinking of something other than his driving. The same is true with reading. If you think of nothing else while you are reading, you will become a better reader.
