21、The mother duck had eight little yellow ducklings, but one of them was different from the others. They called him Ugly Duckling.
“You are an ugly duckling,” the other ducklings said. “You don’t look like us. We don’t want to play with you.” “You have made fun of me since I was born,” the poor duckling said sadly. “You have hurt me for years! I don’t want to stay here any more.” So he left them and tried to find a happy place. Finally, he came to a lake. Many beautiful swans were there. The Ugly Duckling swam to them.
“Hello, little one. I’ve never seen you before. Where are you from?” one of the swans saw him and asked.
“Hello, I came from a place far away. I walked a long way. Now I’m tired. Can I join you?”
“Sure, you are welcome, my dear child,” the swan answered.
“You’re just one of us!” The Ugly Duckling was very happy, but a little surprised. He looked at himself in the clear water. Instead of an ugly duckling, he saw a beautiful swan. It was himself!

22、When Jane and Billy were little, they got along well. The fights didn’t start until they were both 10 years old.
“Mom, Billy won’t give my book back!”
“It’s not yours. It’s mine!”
And so it went. Our peaceful house had turned into a war zone (战区). But we found a solution.
We talked to the kids and discussed what would happen if they argued again. We came up with a list of “punishments (惩罚)” that we would give them if they fought. But they weren’t really punishments — just nice things that we would ask them to do for each other. For example, if Jane started a fight, we would ask her to clean Billy’s room. If Billy started a fight, we would ask him to give Jane a hug.
We wrote these “punishments” on a circular board (圆形板子) with an arrow in the middle. If one of them started a fight, he/she would have to spin (转动) the board and receive the “punishment”.
This “punishment wheel” worked wonders (取得惊人成效). Soon the kids stopped arguing so often. We didn’t have to really punish them — we just had to teach them to be nice to each other.

A.She wanted to show the importance of the word.

C.She wanted the readers to guess the meaning of the word.
D.She was not sure if the word is correct.
【4】With the “punishments”, the author wanted to teach the kids that ________.
A.fighting was not a game

D.fighting was bad for both sides
【5】What’s the best title for the passage?

23、 Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案):
For years I wanted a flower garden. I’d spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew, and Marvin, and the twins, Alisa, and Alan, and then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight(拮据的), as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I’d have to say, “Do you see a money tree in the yard? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Then, one spring morning, on Mother’s Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow(垂柳), because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on — and I couldn’t believe what I saw.
There was a money tree in my yard!
I went to have a look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note among them, “Thank you for your time, Mom. We love you.”
Later, my children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden’s now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they’re right there with me.
I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers, I’ll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes — every time.
I’m still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

24、 There’s always something deep in our soul that never dies. I moved to the small, busy town of Edison in New Jersey six years ago. It was during the second term of my fifth grade. My parents got new jobs and higher income, so they decided it was time to move from Woodbridge to a better, more educational town.
In the US, it is unnecessary to take a test to get into a “good” middle or high school. You just attend the school close to where you live. So, many parents will think about the quality (质量,品质) of the local school when they decide to buy a new house. My parents did the same. We finally chose Edison mainly because of the high quality of its school.
In New Jersey, an area with a good school usually means a concentration of Asian people. There are about 300 students in our school. 55% are Asians and just under half of that are Chinese. There are so many Chinese people nearby that we even have our own Chinese school.
Edison is an old town, just like thousands of others in the United States. However, I have treated it as my hometown. That’s where I spend much of my youth, and the memories there can’t be moved at all.
