Why is “buy things” in Chinese spoken as maidongxi (buy east and west) , but not mainanbei (buy south and north)?
One theory (假说) says maidongxi has 【1】 to do with the five elements (要素): jin (metal), mu (wood), shui (water), huo (fire) and tu (earth). In Chinese culture, the four 【2】 have to do with these elements. East matches wood, west matches metal, south matches fire, and north matches water. If someone carries nan (south) and bei (north) in a basket, it means to 【3】 water and fire, which is not even possible. But if one puts dong (east) and xi (west) in one’s basket, of course they can carry metal and wood.
There are also more common explanations.
One says that in the Tang Dynasty (唐代), there 【4】 two popular markets in Chang’an, the capital of China at that time. One was called the East Market, and the 【5】was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market 【6】, and then went to the West Market. As time went 【7】, people started to describe shopping as “buying east and west.”
The last theory is about China’s trading history. Around the 15th 【8】, China began trading with the world, and most of its foreign goods (货物) happened to come from the east (Japan) and west (Arabia). Markets 【9】 “things from the east and the west”. It was short for “east and west” 【10】.

23、There are several ways you can find out about the places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have travelled to the places, go and see a film about the places, or you can read travel books.
It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give personal, subjective(主观的) ideas of travels which the writers have got themselves. These books can be useful if the writers share their travelling experiences with others. The second are those books which give purely objective(客观的) information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book, then it is even more useful. The third are those books which are called “a guide” to some place. If they are good, the writers will describe and explain the place in detail. I think they are the most helpful to travelers. Like the first kind, they can be exciting and interesting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most special way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that it does not describe everything as “wonderful”, “excellent” or “fantastic”. You must keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版) because travel is a very practical matter and many things change quickly in the twenty-first century. Finally, you should make sure that it is easy to find the useful information for your travel.
