21、 In the future, we could all work and live in buildings with their own ecosystems (生态系统). They are made to produce more energy than they use.
Toby is an engineer from Europe. He has now made wonderful models, showing what this new building could look like.
He said he was suggested by a kind of tree to create the towers. The Hyperion, found in Northern California, is the tallest tree in the world, reaching 115m. The buildings will be 120m high and have 1,000 homes, offices and working spaces, gyms, restaurants and swimming pools.
Because of the ecosystems, the buildings will also make fewer diseases.
The buildings will have city farms and small animal farms producing eggs and milk. "Farming can bring methane (甲烷) that produces energy, and then the energy is supplied to homes," said Toby.
Toby has had many excellent designs (设计). At the end of last year, he also showed designs for eco-friendly (环保的) ocean buildings.

22、For 99% of human history, people took their food from the world around them. They ate all that they could find, and then moved on. Then about 10,000 years ago, or for 1% of human history, people learned to farm the land.
The kind of food we eat depends on which part of the world we live in, or which part of our country we live in. For example, in the south of China they eat rice, but in the north they eat noodles. In European countries near the sea, people eat a lot of fishes. In central (中部) Europe, away from the sea, people don’t eat so much fish, they eat more meat. In Germany and Poland there are hundreds of different kinds of sausages.
In North America, Australia, and Europe, people eat with knives and forks. In China, people eat with chopsticks. In parts of India and the Middle East people use their fingers and bread to pick up food.
Nowadays it is possible to transport (运输) food easily from one part of the world to the other. We can eat what we like, when we like, at any time of the year. In Britain, bananas come from Africa; rice comes from India or the USA; strawberries come from Chile or Spain. Food is very big business. But people in poor countries are still hungry, and people in rich countries eat too much.

Gift giving is different in different countries. In Japan, when people receive a special gift, they do not open it. Later, the same gift may be given away to someone else. Many people have enough things and don’t want too many gifts themselves. In Canada, many people will not give big gifts to someone else. They will pay for a park bench or a tree to help remember a person. In the USA, some people ask their families and friends to give money to charity rather than buy them gifts. Therefore, as time goes by, the boy couldn’t give up his habit. Now, in his twenties, Andrew seems to have developed the bad habit into another one: he always bites his nails(指甲). He cannot stop biting his nails all the time. There’re moments when he even doesn’t know that he is doing it. He realized it was a problem and this worried him a lot. Some of his friends told him about this bad habit, and he stops for a while. But then, if he isn’t busy doing something, he starts biting his nails again!
In fact, there’re a lot of bacteria(细菌) in your nails and they can cause some disease. Also, the nails will become ugly and hard to recover. The worst thing is that this bad habit will bring the mental illness(心理疾病). If people cannot correct it in time, it can affect man’s mental health.
