21、 For ten weeks, in a great house on the island of St Thomas, John C. Lilly tried to teach a six-year-old dolphin to speak English. Margaret Howe, an experiment(试验) helper, would live day and night with Peter, a dolphin. And they would eat, bathe, sleep and play together from Sunday to Friday, with only Saturdays off for Margaret. She lived her life in swimming clothes — with a coat on colder evenings — and cut her hair short so that she could get on with Peter more easily.
After a few days, Peter was becoming more and more interested in winning her attentions. He threw a ball against her shower towel to get her to play. As time went by, he only wanted to play ball with her and not on his own.
The problem was that, just at the time Peter and Margaret began to get on well just as two best friends, the experiment ended and the lab was closed. After a few weeks, Margaret received the sad news that Peter had killed himself by refusing to breathe, and sinking to the bottom of his pool.
Dolphins may not speak English — but, just like humans, they know all about broken hearts.

22、 There are many words to describe the red panda. This animal is cute, fuzzy, reddish, and small. Sadly, the word endangered also describes the red panda. That’s because people are destroying its habitat. If people continue to do this, there will be no more red pandas left in the world.
People cut down the trees that red pandas live in. Red pandas live in the forests of the Himalayas, a mountain range that goes through Nepal, China, and India. About half of the red pandas in the world live there. When people cut down the trees, they destroy the red panda’s habitat. Red pandas spend most of their lives in trees, so they are basically homeless when their forests get cut down. Without their homes, the pandas are not safe from animals that can hurt them.
There is another reason that deforestation, or cutting down trees hurts red pandas. It takes away the animals’ food sources. Red pandas eat bamboo, a grass that grows in their habitat. They also eat fruit, roots, acorns, and eggs. When deforestation happens, the entire habitat is ruined and the red pandas don’t know where to find food. People have also endangered red pandas by taking them out of their habitat to use their fur for clothing and to sell them as pets.
With all of these problems, it’s no wonder that there are fewer red pandas in the world. So how can people help them? Some zoo keepers are helping to solve this problem by bringing red pandas to zoos and clinics. The zookeepers take care of the red pandas and hope that baby red pandas will be born. Then the zookeepers send the babies back into the wild.
There is also a group called the Red Panda Network. It is a group of people who guard the forests in Nepal and the red pandas that live in them. They watch the forests every day. They hope that in the future, people will stop destroying the red panda’s habitat and that the animal will no longer be endangered.
【1】The word “deforestation” in paragraph 3 probably means _______.
A.the fact of losing food sources B.the act of cutting down trees
C.the group who hurt red pandas D.the habitat where red pandas live
【2】What can you learn from the passage?

【3】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce what the red pandas are like and where they live.
B.To tell why the red pandas are endangered and how people help them.
C.To introduce what the red pandas like to eat and how they get food.
D.To tell what the Red Panda Network is and why its members live in forests.
【4】What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Endangered! The Red Panda B.The Red Panda Network
C.Cute! The Red Panda D.The Red Panda Habitat
23、Shirley, an elephant, has something to say. She opens her mouth and speaks. The nearby elephants understand the sound, but it is just noise to me.
What is Shirley exactly saying? Scientists are not sure, but they are trying to find out how elephants communicate. I visited Shirley at the Elephant Sanctuary (避难所) in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The sanctuary is home of Shirley and five other elephants —Bunny, Jenny, Sissy, Tarra and Winkie. All six animals were once in zoos or circuses (马戏团). Now they walk freely in the forests.
A noisy group
Not all the elephants speak like Shirley. Tarra speaks like a sea lion when she is happy. Bunny squeaks (吱吱叫) often. I soon get used to hearing the different voices of the elephants. When one gray giant comes close to me, I know which elephant it is.
Elephants also communicate in a way that people can’t hear. Scientists believe that elephant’s sound can travel for miles. Elephants in a group use it to keep in touch when they are alone.
Old friends
The elephants speak to one another for the same reasons people talk. Sometimes they even shout with excitement. When Shirley first came to the sanctuary, Jenny looked at her and began to shout. Shirley shouted back. At first, the animal keepers had no idea what it was about. Later, they discovered that Shirley and Jenny had stayed together for 20 years earlier in a circus. They still knew each other.
