  • 22、We all know that exercise is good for your health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer.

Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About a quarter of the adults have a good habit of running. The study found these runners were much healthier than non-runners. In fact, the runners lived, on average, three years longer than the non-runners.

Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to lower the risk of injury for people who are new to running.

    Take it easy.

Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed.

    Get good running shoes.

There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should have a new pair of shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.

    Take good notes.

Take time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for things that happen again and again. For example, you may find that your knees hurt when you run sometimes. But perhaps you feel great when you have a rest between running days. These notes will help you make the best plan for running.

    【1】From Paragraph 1, we know ________.

    A.running is the best exercise

B.running is especially good for the heart

C.not all exercise is good for heath

D.running may cause some health problems

【2】According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE?

A.A good habit of running may help you live longer.

B.The number of runners was getting smaller and smaller.

C.41,250 of 55,000 adults have a habit of running.

D.Non-runners are usually too busy to do exercise.

【3】Fitness experts think that new runners should ________.

A.do as much running as possible

    B.choose proper running shoes

C.start running as soon as possible

    D.run 500 to 800 kilometers a year

【4】According to the article, you can ________ by taking notes.

    A.improve your own writing skills

B.do some useful research on exercise

    C.learn more words about running

D.find the way of running that fits you

【5】This article is mainly about ________.

    A.a recent research on running

B.the dangers of running too fast

    C.the experts’ advice on running

D.the risk of running without rest

  • 23、As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘)seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination(想象)would lie very still so that the “enemy(敌人)” would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get on the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes(过程)of growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

【1】The author had _________ kind(s) of fears when she was a child.

    A.one

    B.two

    C.three

    D.none

【2】__________ would scare the author at night.

    A.Streetlights and car lights

    B.Wild animals and enemies

    C.Moving curtains and wind

    D.Strange sights and sounds

【3】When she went to some other places, she would _________.

    A.walk away without others

    B.take a bus by herself

    C.follow others closely

D.make sure not to take a wrong bus

【4】The underlined word “overcome” means “_______” in Chinese.

    A.接受

    B.忍受

    C.信服

    D.克服

【5】From this story we learn that it’s important to __________.

    A.care for others

    B.share with others

    C.help others

    D.scare others

  • 24、

Lisa has been to Antarctica (南极洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.

    Tuesday December 2

We planned to go to Rothera (罗瑟拉站) that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly.

    Wednesday December 3

After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful.

We are staying at Rothera Survey Base (基地) with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2 today. It is very cold, but the regulars ( ) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts.

    Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course (课程) before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

    Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery (风景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad (疯了). I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving —slowly and thankfully.

1Lisa had a nervous wait in Stanley because of________.

    A.strong winds B.thick clouds C.mountain of ice D.low temperature

2Lisa received a special training on________.

    A.December 2 B.December 3 C.December 4 D.December 6

3What impressed Lisa most about Antarctica?

A.People walked around in T-shirt. B.It was a beautiful and quiet place.

C.The weather was sometimes warm. D.The scenery changes every day.

4What does the underlined phrase “go off” mean?

    A.Reach. B.Leave. C.Increase. D.Expand.

5The writing is most probably from Lisa’s________.

    A.notebook B.diary C.homework D.book

七、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Nook’s arrival, Good or Bad?

Booklovers, most of them, will tell you what a pleasure it is to lend a favorite read to a friend—the novel you stayed up all night to get to the end of; the travel book that made you feel as if you yourself were on a train ride through India. For a while it seemed that e-book users were to be denied this pleasure of lending to friends. You could b【1】 a book or magazine for your reading device, but you couldn’t lend it out.

But now, with the Nook, the US book chain Barnes and Noble’s response to Amazon’s Kindle, electronic readers will be able to have their l【2】 literary enthusiasm pressed on their friends, just like readers of physical books can. You simply email the book from your Nook and your friend can read it for two weeks, using any device with the Barnes and Noble e-book reader software. It’s a big i【3】 from previous e-book readers.

The Nook offers other features too. You read in black and white on the main screen, just like with Kindle. The difference is that on the lower part of the device there’s a c【4】   touch screen, which allows you to browse through a book or magazine, but goes black when you’re not using it so that you s【5】 power.

Another exciting thing about the Nook is that it offers Wi-Fi, arguably a big advance on previous e-book readers. Customers in the United States can use the Internet connection to read whole e-books at Barnes and Noble’s hundreds of bookstores for free. None of Barnes and Noble’s c【6】 can come close to this.

But the Nook, ironically, has t【7】 out to be a money-loser for Barnes and Noble, or at least a job-loser for Barnes and Noble’s employees. According to Marian Maneker at The Big Money Website, if the Nook is successful it might take sales from the company’s bookstores, eventually forcing their closure and the loss of thousands of jobs.
