23、 I was on a vacation on Star Island. But things were different this year. I was in a wheelchair. My legs couldn’t move because of a rock—climbing accident last summer. Angry and frustrated (沮丧) to walk or climb, I stayed in my room until my grandma said, “Find another topic, Ben.” I wheeled off to finish a photography project for school. In fact, I’d enjoy it if I wasn’t so unhappy.
Near the hotel, I met an older couple, Susan and Mark. They showed me how to use their kayak (皮划艇) and helped to let me borrow it. They kindly lifted me in and kept their eyes on me as I tried to paddle toward the headland. I experienced a sense of excitement. I felt one with the water. It was almost the same feeling I used to have while I was climbing a rock on the island. This was the same island, but from the water it seemed new. I was sorry that I had left my camera back on my wheelchair with Susan. Mark said she would take photos for us. Then he started down to the beach. I paddle toward him, keeping the boat across the water as Susan suggested. At last, Mark and Susan easily helped me into the wheelchair.
On the following days, I practiced with Mark or Susan. I took my camera out on a calm day and took pictures of rocks and birds. When I got home, I went right to my computer. I hoped that I would find something to use to finish the project. For the first photo, it seemed empty but an empty wheelchair. Then I found the kayak on the water.
