21、The COVID-19 forced students to stay home in the past few months. Online learning became more common. But did students like it?
According to a report by China Youth Daily, Chinese high school students had the most positive attitude (积极的态度) toward online learning compared with those in the US and Japan. A total of 87.1 percent of Chinese students said online learning was “important”, higher than those of any of the other two countries.
However, the report added that students who study online were easily distracted (分心的). Some students always thought how fun it would be if they could play games on computers or mobile phones. Parents in the countryside had to work. They had no time to study with their children. And children had poor self-discipline (自我约束).
Students in all three countries also pointed out several worries, such as damage to their vision (视力), having to depend on the Internet and less independence (独立性) when asked to solve problems on their own.
Luckily, schools across China reopened. There is no need for students to have online classes. They can study at school with their classmates. What’s more, to make students keep healthy, schools will let students have at least two hours of outdoor activities a day, according to the National Health Commission.

23、 The Earth has warmed by about half a degree (0.5度) over the last 100 years. It could be getting warmer on its own, but many scientists think people are making the Earth warmer by making a greenhouse effect (温室效应). The greenhouse effect is very important, Without it, the Earth would not be warm enough for us to live on. But just a little warmer than it is now could cause problems for humans, plants and animals.
Many of the things we do every day can change the Earth’s temperature. We send greenhouse gases (气体) into the air when we watch TV, turn on lights, dry hair, play video games, wash or dry our clothes or drive cars. The rubbish (waste) from factories and homes also produces (生产) greenhouse gases.
Even a small change in temperature can affect (影响) our weather. This can cause changes in the sea, the air, flooding (洪水) and our fresh water.
The change in the temperature can also cause changes in the living places for animals and plants.
Global warming (全球变暖) is a big problem, and we can do every little bit to help. We can also save many things. Remember: If you do a little, you can bring a better world.

24、People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极圈) on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
【1】According to the passage, what happened about 100 years ago?
A.Two men succeeded in getting to the North Pole.
B.Temperatures in the North Pole went above 32°F.
C.The environment in the North Pole suddenly became worse.
D.The North Pole changed into thick ice because of the temperatures.
【2】What does the underlined word “uninhabited” probably mean in Chinese?
A.气候恶劣的
B.充满危险的
C.困难重重的
D.无人居住的
【3】The reason for the ice to break into two opening lanes of water is __________.
A.that the temperature suddenly drops
B.that the water under the ice is frozen
C.that the ocean water under the ice moves
D.that the surface is covered with lots of ice
