24、 My 11-year-old daughter has been offered an academic scholarship (奖学金) to a private school. It's only a small discount (折扣), but the scholarship means she is accepted by the school which my husband and I need to pay $ 20,000 a year for. Should we pay the private school cost, or choose free education instead?
It was really a hard decision for us to make. For me, I always wanted my children to go to a private school, like I did. Not because my family is rich, but because I believe that the best education is private. It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary school. “They'll go to a private high school.” I told myself.
But the fact is that my eldest is now in her last year of primary school, and my husband and I will find our way to afford the private school. If so, I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a good pay, but that was just our wishes, not the fact.
During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can't give up everything for my baby girl. I explain that I want to be a positive (积极的) role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is a terrible strain on a family. I point out that even the best private school won’t protect my children from disappointment or hard work. And finally, it's decided.
Because I understand it's my family that shaped me instead of my great private school education. I can no longer remember the maths problems and what Shakespeare said which I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my family, however, have turned out to be impossible to forget.

25、Everyone gets sad. Being sad can happen pretty often. More than half of teenagers go through a period of sadness at least once a month. When you’re sad, it feels like it will last forever. The world seems dark and unfriendly. You might feel like you have nothing to look forward to. Many times, you cry, and it’s hard to stop. However, your feeling of sadness usually doesn't last very long — a few hours, or maybe a day or two.
When sadness starts to go away, it feels like a big stone is being lifted from your body. If sad feelings go on for too long, it’s called depression. Children who have depression may not know it. Often, it’s a parent or teacher who notices children’s changes.
When depression happens, it’s very important for children to receive treatment. When they do, they can get better quickly. Sometimes treatment includes talking to someone who knows all about depression. Sometimes it means taking medicine. Sometimes both of these things are used. If you think you have depression, or you just have sadness that simply will not go away, it is important to talk to an adult about it first. This person can help you find the right kind of treatment. Many cities also have mental health hotlines that are listed in the phone book. There is always somebody who can help.

26、Sort trash, save Earth
You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting (垃圾分类) policy. People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins (垃圾箱). Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai
Recyclable garbage includes paper, books, boxes, newspapers, and glass bottles.
Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries (电池), nail polish (指甲油), and other things with harmful chemicals.
Wet garbage usually comes from the kitchen, such as food, vegetables, flowers, leaves and eggshells.
Dry garbage is anything you cannot put into the other three bins. It includes pens, toilet paper, tape, hair, and towels (毛巾).
Why is garbage sorting a big problem? It’s because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our soil, air and water. Actually we can make use of some garbage again. And first, we need to sort our garbage.
For example, if you put an old battery into the “harmful waste” bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Can factories sort garbage for us? Yes, they can. But it takes many workers to do this and costs lots of money. If we all sort our own garbage, things will become much easier.
● Garbage sorting and recycling around the world.
Germany: There are big machines in supermarkets. You can put bottles in the machines and get money back. You can get one to two yuan per bottle. People like this because they can get money and protect the environment at the same time.
Japan: A trash truck comes to people’s doors to pick up their garbage. It plays music when it’s coming. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.
Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus stations. An hour-long bus ride costs three large bottles, five medium (中等大小的) bottles or 10 plastic cups. But the bottles must be clean.

27、 Being happy is an ability, which means we need to learn how to do it. This, perhaps, explains why around one in four undergraduate students at Yale University in the US have signed up (报名) for its Psychology and the Good Life course this semester. The course actually set a record of being the most popular in Yale’s 316-year history.
Laurie Santos, the psychology professor who will be running the course, believes that the high school lives which her students must have had are the reason that the course is so popular. It’s likely that students who get into top universities like Yale had a difficult time in high school. In order to stand out, they had to surround themselves with endless tests, competitions, and so-called “hobbies”, which made them very unhappy. "A lot of us are anxious (焦虑的), stressed, numb (麻木的)," Alannah Maynez, a 19-year-old undergraduate student at Yale, told The New York Times,“and I won’t miss such a chance.”
Yale isn’t the first university to offer such courses. Back in 2006, Harvard introduced its Positive Psychology class, and about 900 students signed up for it. There are now many universities in the US that have started courses on positive psychology, including the University of Pennsylvania and Claremont Graduate University.
It may sound sad when Harvard student Nancy Cheng called Positive Psychology a “self-help class”. But it’s a good thing that students accept that they have a problem, instead of having to pretend that everything is fine in front of everyone.
It’s true that being happy is an ability, and it’s OK that you may not have it yet. However, it’s never too early—or too late—to start learning.
