  • 24、Beijing’s two sessions (会议) are being widely discussed across China. During the sessions, many proposals (提案) and suggestions were put forward. Here are two issues that were discussed during the sessions that might interest you.

    Smartphone ban (禁令)

According to the survey conducted last year, 68.1 percent of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones. To keep students from playing with their smartphones in class, some schools have already banned smartphones on campus.

Lei Yanqin, a deputy (代表) of the National People’s Congress (NPC, 全国人民代表大会), suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only bother teachers, but also make it difficult for students to concentrate (集中注意力). She added that students might also show off their phones too much.

    Video game rating system (分级制度)

Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory (《王者荣耀》), Guangming Daily reported. With their computers and tablets, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some games have violent (暴力的) or vulgar (粗俗的) content that might not be suitable for young people.

Many NPC deputies suggested that a rating system for online games should be introduced. All games would be put into age groups according to their content. Players would have to give their ID numbers before playing certain games.

1According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TRUE?

    A. Half of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones.

    B. Smartphones have been banned on campus in all schools around China.

    C. Online games are popular among a number of teenagers in China.

    D. To protect teenagers, a rating system for online games has been set up.

  • 25、   Joe, 75, lived very happily and had a beautiful family. He had four grandchildren, and they all visited him during their holidays.

Before they came to visit, Joe got his home ready for the children: cleaning the house and buying their favorite food. But while he was working, he lost his favorite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife. She died when their first child was born. Joe loved the watch very much. He was sad.

When his grandchildren came, they told Joe that they would find the watch. One granddaughter asked, "Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?" Joe answered, "I think when I was cleaning the barn (谷仓)."

All the children went to the barn to look for the watch, except little Mike. They stayed in the barn for more than two hours but couldn't find it.

After they came back, Mike went to look for the watch in the barn. Joe asked why he was going there. The little boy just asked the other children not to follow him and to keep silent. He was there for about 15 minutes and then ran quickly to his grandfather. He found the watch!

Joe was very surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy answered, "I sat there without making a noise, and the barn was so quiet. After a few minutes, I heard the' tick, tick' sound and found the watch." Joe hugged him and thanked the little boy.

This shows the power of silence. If we stay calm, we are able to find a solution (解决方法)!

A.Because it was very expensive. B.Because he didn't like it.

C.Because it was a gift from his wife. D.Because it was very beautiful.

2How long did it take the little boy to find the watch?

    A.About one hour B.At least 50 minutes

    C.About 15 minutes D.More than 2 hours

3Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Joe was a 75-year-old man and he had a beautiful family.

B.The little boy found he watch with the help of other grandchildren.

C.Joe was very surprised when he knew Mike found his watch.

D.Mike heard the "tick, tick" sound in the barn.

4The underlined word "silent" may mean ________.

    A.healthy B.warm C.quiet D.quick

5What does the writer want to tell us?

A.We should take good care of our watch.

B.Cleaning the house is very important for all of us.

C.When we meet problems, we should stay calm and find a solution.

    D.The barn isn't a good place.

  • 26、If you have a brother or sister, you already know you are different from each other. You live together in the same house and have the same parents, but you have different personalities.

Why is this? One possible reason is the way your parents treat you. First-born children receive all the attention from their parents. Most families have twice as many photos of a first-born than any other child. Parents usually give first-born more responsibility and depend on them to take care of younger brothers and sisters. As a result, first-borns are often responsible, hard-working, and jealous. They often want to do well at school and work. There are more first-born American Presidents, for example, George Bush, George Washington, and Lyndon Baines Johnson-than second or last-born children.

When a second child arrives, parents are more relaxed.  The second child has to compete with the first-born for the parents’ attention and love. Their children often choose different sports and hobbies to do well at school and work, but have to be creative to get their family’s attention. They are often friendly and cool. Many famous talk-show hosts were born last.

【1】The writer thinks that the second children are often  ______ .

    A. outgoing and jealous B. cool and friendly

    C. hard-working and serious D. creative and responsible

2The underlined word “jealous” means ______  in the passage.

    A. 友好的  B. 冷静的   C. 快乐的  D. 嫉妒的

3 ______ is usually the happiest in the family according to the passage.

    A. The eldest child. B. The second child.

    C. The youngest child. D. The father.

4We can learn from the passage that   .

    A. the second child is very similar to the first-born child

    B. brothers and sisters usually have the same personalities

    C. it’s easy for the second child to get his or her parents’ attention

    D. there are more first-born successful people than second or last-born people

    5The passage is mainly about  ______ .

    A. birth order and personalities

    B. the personalities of the second child in a family

    C. the personalities of the eldest child in a family

    D. the personalities of the youngest child in a family

Dear boys and girls, as we all know that all of you have got the chance to study online because of the serious situation around China. How exciting it is for many of you guys! 1, along with the excitement, you may meet some problems like spending too much time playing games while having online classes and so on. These problems might make 2 impossible for you to study well. So what can we do to improve our online studies? Here are some pieces of advice for you.

    Ensure a good connection

To me, the biggest headache about studying online is the poor quality of my Internet connection. 3 one of my online classes, I couldn’t hear my English teacher’s voice and I had to reconnect. It wasted lots of time. Since then, I have checked my network before class every day and asked other family members not to use the 4 while I’m having a class. (Zhao Yuchen, 13, Beijing )

    5 your time properly

Studying at home has made it hard for me to plan my time. I had a hard time planning my course timetable at first. Planning 6of time and creating a study calendar is very important. You need to estimate (估计) how much time each task will 7, review your class content(内容), ask questions and take notes, and make a to-do list before doing your homework. These are all good ways to help us learn better online.  (Lin Xiyu, 14, Shanghai)

    No distractions(分心)

Online learning takes strong self-discipline (自律) and willpower. There are lots of distractions while studying at home. My mom likes to offer me snacks and drinks, which sometimes distracts me from listening during my classes. I have asked her to stop interrupting (干扰) me while I’m studying. A 8 room and clean desk can help us pay full attention to what we do.  (Zhang Penghui, 15, Heilongjiang)
