四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or from the mark made by your finger.

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programs may only be 51%. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.

In the future your computer will recognize you in the eye. So smile!

    A. Remembering eyes and smell.  B. Remembering fingers or voices.

【4】What problems could there be with the eye-recognition program?

    A. Some eyes are the same.     B. Eyes can change.

  • 25、Old Dawson had the best apples in town, but kids knew they mustn’t go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because Dawson, a badtempered (坏脾气的) man, they said, would come after you with his gun.

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house. Like most of the children, Janet was scared of the old man because of the stories she’d heard about him.

Amy said that Mr. Dawson wouldn’t hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a big smile changed his whole face as he said, “Hello, Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.”

Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree.

As they walked on, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he’s the meanest man in town. Why was he so nice to us?”

Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn’t very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she always smiled at him. It took a while, but one day he half smiled back at her.

After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a “Hello” at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.

We’re always trying to achieve so much, and it’s so easy to get caught up in (被卷入;陷入) everyday life that we forget we can bring cheer to ourselves and others simply. Giving a smile takes so little effort; let’s smile to others.

  • 26、   It was a cold snowy morning after the winter vacation. And it was my first day at my new school. I was walking alone slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was early and there weren’t many people on the road. Suddenly a girl who was riding a bike on ice fell down. She was trying hard to get up but fell again. Without thinking, I went over and helped her. She said “thank you” with a smile and then rode away. Her words warmed me a lot.

Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and introduced me to the class. Then he asked me to sit down beside a girl. I felt so nervous that I didn’t dare to look at her. Soon the first class, English, started. Their textbooks were different from those in my old school. As I was wondering what to do, an English book appeared in front of me. “Let’s share it.” the girl beside me said, “Hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped this morning. Later on, we became good friends.

From that I learned: To help others is actually to help ourselves.

Many years ago, a young woman doctor named Jessie received a present-“a parrot” at her birthday party. She was always busy in the hospital and spent little time with the parrot. So over time the parrot developed a bad attitude(态度).

It got to the point that every word out of the bird’s mouth was obnoxious. Sometimes the parrot even shouted at Jessie. She tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else she could think of to “clean up” the bird’s attitude.

Finally, Jessie was angry and shouted at the parrot. The parrot shouted back. Jessie lost her temper and shook the parrot. The parrot became even more rude. Jessie threw the bird into the fridge angrily. For a few minutes the parrot kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total silence.

Fearing that she’d hurt the parrot, Jessie quickly opened the door to the fridge.

The parrot walked out onto Jessie’s arms and said “I believe I may have offended(冒犯) you with my rude language and actions. I am so sorry for what I said and did just now and I will do everything I can to correct my rude attitude.”

Jessie couldn’t believe the change in the bird’s attitude.
