四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、We may know that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock(文化冲击), is the way our head and our personality react to(对…做出反应) the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.

Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are very excited.

Unluckily, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have got used to our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This time of cultural adjustment(调整) can be very difficult and lead to pulling away from the new culture.

The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!

The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called

“reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this happens when you go back to your own culture and find

that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

【1】How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock?

    A. Lonely and sad. B. Bored and homesick.

    C. Angry and impatient. D. Happy and excited.

【2】How could the third stage be described?

    A. Adjustment.  B. Pulling away  C. Shock. D. Anger.

【3】What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Human beings would pass through four stages when they begin to live in a new culture.

    B. Entering and living in a new culture is challenging(挑战).

    C. It is much fun to live in a new culture.

    D. Life in a new culture is a struggle.

  • 25、   An organism’s environment is all the living and nonliving things that surround and influence the organism(生物体). You are living with many things that make your environment suitable for you to live in. Would that be true if you lived in a swamp(沼泽)?

Environments include biotic parts and abiotic parts. Biotic parts are the living things in an environment: plants, animal, and other organisms. Abiotic parts are the nonliving things. Abiotic parts of an environment include climate, water, earth, light, air and nutrients. The abiotic parts of an environment have an important role. Temperature and amount of water influence which plants and animals can live in a place. An ibis(朱鹮) gets used to living in a warm, wet swamp and cannot live in a hot, dry desert.

An ecosystem is all the organisms living in a place together with their environment. An ecosystem can be huge, such as a large forest or desert. Or it can be small, such as a small pool or a single bush. Each ecosystem has its own collection of living and nonliving things.

A swamp ecosystem is made up of both living and nonliving things. The climate, plenty of water, air, muddy soils are all abiotic parts that make swamps different from other environments. Birds, black bears, trees, bushes, and mosquitoes are all biotic parts of a swamp environment.

1Biotic parts include many things in an environment except _________.

    A. snakes B. strawberry C. wheat D. sand

2The example of an ibis is used to explain the importance of _________.

    A. the organisms B. the abiotic parts C. the ecosystem D. the swamp

3The underlined word “abiotic” probably _____ in Chinese in this passage

    A. 环境的 B. 无生命的 C. 微生物的 D. 自然的

4Which of the fo1lowing is not true?

    A. If all swamps disappear, ibis will be endangered.

    B. In an ecosystem, abiotic parts are not connected to the living things.

    C. An ecosystem can be very big or very small.

    D. An ecosystem includes living things along with nonliving things.

5The best title of this passage is _________.

    A. What is an ecosystem? B. An Organism’s Environment

    C. A Swamp Ecosystem D. The Biotic and Abiotic Parts of An Environment

  • 26、As graduation day approached, excitement increased. Being out of high school meant I was finally coming of age. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions, doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder and it meant going to school with boys—a welcome change coming from an all-girl high school. There was never any question in my mind that I would go to a college away from home.

My mother’s idea, on the other hand, was just the opposite. Trying her best not to force her preferences on me, she would subtly ask whether I had considered particular schools—all of which happened to be located in or near my hometown of Chicago.

Then panic set in. My feelings took a 180-degree turn. I really didn’t want to leave high school at all, and it was questionable whether I wanted to grow up after all. It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year; I didn’t enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again.

Despite months of expectation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day. As the familiar melody(旋律) of “Pomp and Circumstance” echoed(回声) in the background, I looked around at the other figures in white caps and gowns as we seriously lined into the hall. Tears welled up uncontrollably in my eyes, and I was consumed by a rush of sadness. As if in a daze(恍惚), I rose from my seat when I heard my name called and slowly crossed the stage to receive my diploma. As I reached out my hand, I knew that I was reaching not just for a piece of paper but for a brand-new life. Exciting as the future of a new life seemed, it wasn’t easy saying good-bye to the old one—the familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would even miss that chemistry class I wasn’t particularly fond of and the long travel each day between home and school that I hated. Good or bad, it was what I knew.

Although going back is impossible, it’s comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time.

  • 27、The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.

There are plenty of "energy drinks" on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.  Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited( 限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems.
