  • 25、“ Don’t tell anyone”. We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. We’re often tempted to “ spill the beans”, even if we regret it later.

According to Asim Shah, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well “become a burden”. This is because people often have an "obsessive (过度的)and anxious urge to share it with someone".

An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted with secrets can suffer from depression (沮丧), anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail.

But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. "Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone," according to Shah.

He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out. But this doesn't mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.

Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you'd better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn't give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone's secret, you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn't so secret anymore.

【1】What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “spill the beans”?

    A.Keep a secret.

    B.Give a secret away.

    C.Make beans out.

    D.Give up the friendship.

    【2】The underlined pronoun “ it ” refers to________ .

    A.secret

    B.trouble

    C.knowledge

    D.drive

【3】The fifth paragraph mainly tells us________.

A.Talkative people could let secrets slip out easily.

B.It's a good idea to share your secrets with quiet people.

C.Quiet people can always keep everything inside.

D.It's possible that quiet people also talk about secrets.

【4】Which of the following statements may be Shah's advice?

A.Tell secrets to a person close to you in order not to feel guilty.

B.Put yourself in someone’s position and decide whether to tell a secret.

C.Don't let the person whose secret is given up by you know the truth.

D.Share someone's secret with as many people as possible.

    【5】According to the passage, ________.

A.it can be hard to keep secrets because we will regret it later.

B.people should never share secrets with others.

C.if you let out your friends’ secrets, you should be honest with your friends about it.

D.your friends may feel angry if you slip out their secrets.

  • 26、   As the global pandemic (大流行病) speeds up, many are wondering about the effectiveness of masks and when it's necessary to wear them. Most people from the East believe that wearing a mask is essential to control the spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP). But people in the West generally would argue that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is simply unnecessary.

In Eastern countries like China, mask-wearing is ingrained in their cultures. In fact, people in the East wear masks not just to protect themselves from illness but also for a variety of other reasons.

In many Asian countries, masks are worn in many scenarios (情景) in daily life, such as doing housework or visiting patients in the hospital. They can give people the comfort of being protected. In recent years, they are worn simply for cosmetic reasons. Young people in Japan, for example, wear masks as a fashion statement, expressing their personal style through unique designs and patterns.

In Asia, wearing a face mask, deeply rooted in the culture, is also an outward expression of group-oriented values. With one's face partially covered, one becomes part of a giant collectivist (集体主义的) whole. "People communicated their responsibilities to the social group of which they were members," wrote Peter Baehr, a research professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. "By disguising an individual's face, it gave greater salience (突显) to collective identity. Just like we need to wear uniforms when we are at work or at school."

In Western countries, however, individual values are the most important. As a citizen, it is one's duty to prevent the spread of illness by following proper hygienic procedures, such as washing one's hands and limiting one's contact with others. However, a face mask is taken as something only for those showing symptoms (症状) of illness.

Whether from the East or the West, social culture and peer pressure have played an important role in one's decision about whether or not to wear a mask. That's because human beings are social creatures who take into consideration what other members of society think of us. The most important thing is to respect others' opinions, no matter how different they are.

1The underlined word "ingrained" in Paragraph 2 probably means "__________".

    A.deeply fixed B.widely respected

    C.greatly developed D.gradually accepted

2The third and fourth paragraph are written to show__________.

A.how people in Asia use masks

B.why people in Asia wear masks

C.what Asian culture and value are

D.when Asian culture and value work

    3The writer probably agrees that__________.

A.wearing a mask is a good way to show one's personality

B.it is not necessary for those who are healthy to wear a mask

C.whether we choose to wear a mask is a reflection of our culture

D.westerners take wearing a mask as a useful way to protect themselves

  • 27、Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I’m tired.”

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan (日晒后的颜色). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.

I was also surprised by how hard-working US students are.

In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

【1】According to the writer, textbook English is ________ everyday English.

    A.quite different from

    B.the same as

    C.more difficult than

    D.easier than

【2】What does the underlined word “confused ” in the fourth paragraph mean in Chinese?

    A.困惑

    B.憧憬

    C.悲痛

    D.后悔

【3】A good US student spends his/her time ________.

    A.only in doing homework

    B.only on sports or music

C.only in working for the public

D.on studies, sports or music and public work

【4】Which of the following is NOT true?

A.The writer is now in US.

B.American girls love to have white skin.

C.US students are talented and hard-working.

D.The writer regrets (后悔) that he gave up playing the piano.

【5】Which is the best title for the passage?

A.My Own Travel in the US

    B.My Studying in the US

    C.My Opinion about the US

    D.My Friends in the US

【6】How do US people say when others ask them “How are you?”

    A.How do you do?

    B.How are you?

    C.I am fine.

D.I’m good or I am tired.

【7】One day someone said to me, “What’s up?

    I ________.

    A.answered them quickly

B.also said to them “What’s up?”

    C.smiled only
