四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I always felt sorry for the people in wheelchair. Some people, old and weak, cannot get around by themselves. Others seem perfectly healthy, dressed in business suits. But whenever I saw someone in a wheelchair, I only saw a disability, not a person.

One day, I fainted because of low blood pressure. It scared my parents. The doctor said that I must rest for a while. I agreed to take it easy but, as I stepped to the door, I saw my dad pushing a wheelchair in my direction! Feeling the color burn my face, I asked him to push that thing right back to where he found it.

I could not believe this was happening to me. Wheelchairs were fine for other people but not for me, as my father wheeled me out into the main street, people immediately began to treat me differently.

Little kids ran in front of me, forcing my father to stop the wheel chair suddenly. People looked down at me, pity in their eyes. Then they would look away, maybe because they thought the sooner they forgot me , the better they would feel.

“I’ m just like you!” I wanted to scream. “The only difference is you’ve got legs, and I have wheels. ” But I had to taste the bitterness (痛苦) by myself.

People in wheelchairs are not different. They see every look and hear each word. Looking out at the faces, I finally understood: I was once just like them. I treated people in wheelchairs exactly the way they did not want to be treated.I realized it is some of us with two healthy legs who are truly disabled.

1The author once ________ when she was healthy.

    A. laughed at disabled people

    B. took pity on the people in wheelchair

    C. wished herself to sit in a wheelchair

    D. saw some healthy people moving around in wheelchairs

2The underlined word “fainted” in Paragraph 2 means _________.

    A. 瘫痪   B. 康复   C. 晕倒   D. 出诊

3Facing the wheelchair for the first time, the author _______.

    A. felt curious about it   B. refused to accept it right away

    C. thought it was ready for his father   D. got ready to move around in it at once

4The experience of the author tells us that “_________”.

    A. Life is always the best teacher.

    B. People often eat their bitter fruit.

    C. Don’t do to others what you don’t want others to do to you.

    D. Life is so changeable that nobody can know it until it happens.

  • 25、   Paul awoke to the sound of the alarm clock. Normally, this would be followed by feelings of worry about the day ahead. But today was different. Today he couldn’t wait to go to school.

He rushed to his desk and picked up the old jam jar which contained a colorful butterfly. It had taken him hours to catch and now it was going to be part of his biology presentation for school.

While most of his classmates would be showing drawings of insects or animals taken from textbooks, Paul planned to present something different ---- a live creature. This was sure to get him the highest grade in the class.

Paul sat at his desk admiring the insect’s beautiful red and yellow wings. He had made air holes in the jar’s lid, and added leaves for the butterfly to eat. It might be in a glass prison but at least it was being well cared for, Paul thought as he left for school.

Paul entered the classroom early, and put the jar in his desk. Biology was the first lesson after lunch and he wanted his presentation to be a surprise. After taking the jar from his bag, he noticed the butterfly was very still. Its wings moved very slowly and its color seemed to have faded too. Probably just a little tired from the trip in the bag, Paul hoped.

Throughout the morning, Paul secretly checked on the insect. Each time it seemed a little stiller, its color a little duller. Something was wrong. When the lunch-bell rang, he waited for his classmates to leave before opening the jar. The butterfly was still alive, but only just.

He took the jar to the bathroom and sprinkled a few drops of water on the butterfly’s head. The cooling effect was instant. The butterfly came to life again and Paul barely managed to replace the lid before it flew out. But rather than pleasure, the sight of the revived butterfly crashing against the jar, desperate for freedom, made Paul feel guilty. He was being cruel for a mark.

As he walked back to class, feeling ashamed, the bell went again. It was time for Biology. He walked over to the window, opened the jar and set the butterfly free. A moment later the biology teacher entered. "Paulyour presentation’s first today."

"Sorry sir," the boy replied” I forgot all about it."

1What can we guess about Paul from the passage?

    A. He often caught animals. B. He did not usually enjoy school.

    C. He was a very clever student. D. He was sometimes quite cruel.

2Why was Paul confident that his biology project would receive a high grade?

    A. Because biology was his favourite subject.

    B. Because his project idea was popular.

    C. Because he had spent much time preparing.

    D. Because his butterfly was real and very colourful.

3The underlined word "revived" in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to "______

    A. refreshed B. returned C. replaced D. relieved

4Why did Paul finally free the butterfly?

    A. It was time for class. B. It was no longer very active.

    C. He felt ashamed at his actions. D. He forgot about the presentation.

5In what order did the following event take place?

    a. Paul took the jar to the bathroom and sprinkled a few drops of water on the butterfly’s head.

    b. Paul walked over to the window, opened the jar and set the butterfly free

    c. Paul planned to present something different in the Biology presentation

d.Paul entered the classroom early, and put the jar in his desk.

e.Throughout the morning, Paul secretly checked on the insect

    A. d-c-b-e-a B. d-b-c -a-e C. c-d-e-a-b D. c-d-a-e-b

  • 26、Recently, my husband and I had the chance to do something good for two people who were complete strangers to us. It made us feel so good to be able to do it that I thought I should share.

We were traveling to Thailand on New Year's Day with our family. Since I travel a lot for work, we have had enough flying miles to become the VIP(very important person) of the flight to enjoy first class(头等舱) seats.

As we were sitting in the very first two seats in the first row of first class waiting for the plane to take off, I heard one of the flight attendants(航班服务员) telling the others that there was a young couple sitting in the back of the plane that had just been married several days before and were going on their honeymoon(蜜月). They had ordered their flight eight months before but, for some reason, had not been able to get seats together. No one else on the plane wanted to move and the bride(新娘) was in tears.

I turned to my husband and told him what I heard. We agreed without thinking twice and I called the flight attendant over to tell her that we would be happy to give up our seats for this young couple. The flight attendant seemed shocked and amazed and said,"Really? Are you sure?" We said, "Sure!"

So, we moved to the back of the plane. I was in a middle seat in the back part and my husband, who is 63, in the window seat of the last row of the plane.

The flight attendants were very thankful for what we had done and cared for us carefully even though we were no longer sitting in first class, and we both made friends with the people sitting around us and had a great flight. I had to go back to the front of the plane to get a forgotten object back during the flight and noticed that the young couple were sitting very close together, happily sipping champagne(品尝香槟).

It really made my New Year to get on to such a wonderful start!

  • 27、Do you think you’re smarter than your parents and grandparents? According to James Flynn,a professor at a New Zealand university, you are! Over the course of the last century, people who have taken IQ have gotten increasingly better  scores —on average, three points better for every decade that has passed. This improvements is known as the "Flynn effect",and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests and other similar tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge.Flynn knew that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment and experience, but the improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity. or our surroundings. So What was happening in the 20th century that was helping people achieve higher scores on intelligence tests?

Scientists have proposed(提出)several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure(暴露)to tests in general. Because we take so many tests, we learn test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test. Others have pointed to better nutrition. (营养) Since it results in babies being born larger, healthier, and with more brain development than in the past.Another possible explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information. This could prepare people to do the kinds of problem-solving that intelligence tests require.

Flynn has limited the possible explanations when he looked carefully at the test data and discovered that the improvement in scores was only on certain parts of the IQ test.Test-takers didn’t do better on the maths or vocabulary sections of the test; They did better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test shows a set of abstract (抽象的) shapes and test-takers must find the patterns (模式) and connections between them and decide which shape should be added to the test.

According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases.Every time you play a computer game or figure out how to program a new cell phone, you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps you do well on one kind of intelligence test.So are you really smarter than your parents? In one very specific way,you may be.

    1The "Flynn effect" is ______.

    A. used to measure intelligence

    B. an increase in IQ test scores over time

    C. the influence of technology on intelligence

    D. connected our experience

2The underlined word “heredity” means _______.

    A. the technological improvement

    B. the advanced educational methods

    C. the help of our peer or schoolmates

    D. intelligence passing down from our parents

3According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

    A. Taking fewer tests can help us get higher scores.

    B. Experience have more effects on our intelligence than surroundings.

    C. Newer education encourages children to find things out by themselves.

    D. People’s vocabulary ability and visual intelligence have improved.

4What could be the best title for the passage?

    A. What is Flynn effect?

    B. How can we do better on IQ tests?

    C. Are parents helping in our intelligence?

    D. Are human beings getting smarter?
