  • 24、   A holiday is any day when people lay aside their ordinary duties and cares. The word comes from Old English. At first, holidays honored some holy events or persons. People in Great Britain and other countries speak of holidays as Americans speak of vacations.

Every nation has its special holidays. China observes New Year’s Day (January 1), May Day and National Day as legal holidays, as it was on Oct. 1, 1949 that People’s Republic of China was founded. The Chinese have long celebrated the Chinese lunar year. In the United States, congress has declared several as legal days such as New Year's Day (January1), Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and so on. Some holidays celebrate special  events  in  the  development  of  a  country,  such  as  Greece’s  Independence  Day,  Italy’s Liberation Day and India’s Independence Day.

In the United States, banks and schools usually close on a legal holiday. When such a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is often observed. Schools and organizations often observe days  known  as  traditional holidays,  although schools and businesses do not close  then. Those holidays include Valentine's Day and Halloween.

  • 25、   Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.

Scientists from University of Toronto found that forgetting actually is a key part of learning. Getting rid of (除去) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.

What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.

In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket cashier (收银员) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer (设计师) who often meets his or her clients (客户) will remember longer.

“That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神经元) from stem cells (干细胞). ”said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto.

There is a special area in our brains called hippocampus (海马体). It is important for us to learn and remember. When new neurons fit in the hippocampus, they renew our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were very young.

However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information. Matthew Walker from the University of California told the Huffington Post.

So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA Britain Spain Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes so the program can be up to 94% correct depending on how good the technology is. Some programs may only be 51%. In Britain it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
