四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In 1996, Joe Richman had been working as a radio reporter on US national radio for several years and was looking for a new idea for a radio programme. He met a teenager called John Cutler. John had Tourette's Syndrome—a brain illness. This meant that Josh did not always have control of his movements and speech.

John was just beginning high school when he agreed to work with Joy on a story about his illness. Joe wanted John to keep a radio diary of his daily life. He gave John a tape recorder and asked him to record what happened to him every day. John and Joe agreed that an important part of his story would be talking to his school friends about Tourette's Syndrome. John was embarrassed(尴尬) to record at school—his friends might laugh.

One day, John took the tape recorder to school, but he kept it inside his bag all day. He was too afraid to bring it out. After months of feeling afraid, he took the tape recorder out on lunch time. What happened next was a total surprise. John tells it best:“Everyone jumped at the chance. Everyone started asking me questions about that, I had never really talking about it to anyone—except my mom and dad. ”

That was an important day in John's life because he learned to be more open about his condition. Now John says he wants to do radio diaries until he's 80 years old. He learnt a lot about himself by doing the radio diary. It made a great radio programme, too. Being a reporter is like having a passport. You can ask questions, be curious and explore new worlds. While popular in the US,the April Fools Day tradition is even more popular in European countries, such as France and Great Britain.Although the roots of the traditional tricking are unclear, the French and the British both have their own stories about the origin of the celebration.

One story holds that the first April Fools Day was on April 1 of the year when the king of France introduced the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April l.Many people were not used to the new calendar and continued(继续)to celebrate New Years Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, they became the first April Fools.Others began to give funny gifts on the day to laugh at the fools who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1.

An English story about the day, however, says that it began sometime during the 1200s.At the time,King John was in the habit of making roads out of the paths he most often walked along. The people of one particular farm village were aware of this.To avoid having their green grasslands and pastures(牧场)disturbed by one of the kings roads, they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside.

The king sent a group of messengers(使者)to inform the villagers that they must remove the fence.Upon hearing that the king was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. When the kings messengers arrived, they were met by the villagers pretending to be mad.The people just throw things and ran around wildly. The messengers were surprised by this and reported to King John that these people were so mad that there was no necessity of punishing them. So,the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the king.In Great Britain, tradition only allows April Fools tricks from midnight to noon on April l.Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.

【1】Which country has the origin of the celebration of April Fools Day?

    B.It was on April 2nd.

    C.It was on March lst.

    A.Because they were stupid.

B.Because they were not used to the new calendar and continued to celebrate New Years Day on what had become the first day of April.

C.Because they were happy to become the first April Fools.

D.Because they were given funny gifts on the day.

  • 26、Foods that are well known to you may not be familiar to people from different places around the world. Tourists and travelers often get to try some unfamiliar food. That is part of the fun of traveling. Here are four people’s experiences with foreign food.

David King is a Chinese student in France. “I never had cheese or even milk before I came to France. Cows are seldom seen in my part of China. So there is no milk or milk products. I drank some milk when I first arrived in France. I hated it! I tried cheese, too, but I didn’t like it. I love ice cream, though that’s made from milk.”

Birgit is from Sweden. She traveled to Australia on vocation. “I was in a restaurant that was special in fish. I heard some other people order flake, so I ordered some, too. It was delicious! Later, I learned that flakes is an Australian name for shark. Now, whenever I see a new food, I try it on purpose. You know why? I remember how much I enjoyed flake.”

Chandra is a dentist in Texas. She is from India. “ I’m afraid to try new foods because maybe there is beef in them. I’m a Hindu (印度教信徒) and my religion (信仰) stops me from eating meat from the cow. That’s why I can’t eat hamburgers or noodles with meatballs.”

Nathan is from the United States. He taught for a year in China. “My friend gave me some 100-year-old eggs to eat. I didn’t like their appearance at all. The eggs were green inside, but my friends said the color was normal. Chinese people put something on fresh eggs. Then they put them in the earth for three months. So the eggs weren’t really very old. Even so, I didn’t want to touch them.”

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、 More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, teaching tools like iPads are used in a lot of courses, 【1】 language, history and science.

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos. students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.

The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it. so they can save time for doing other things. Other students. however. might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially h  2 to the students who are learning a language at different paces.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn(like listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are s 3 in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. 'I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait till I get home.' a student explained.

But many adults c  4  that technologies like iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad. he will have f  5   chances to have face-to-face communication with others.

However, technologies are a  6_ a part of most students' day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make c 87 with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
