四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

When you think of the Arctic, you imagine an icy land of white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on Earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish, and now, CNN says, “It’s the Arctic’s turn.”

German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter(升) of snow. That may cause terrible air pollution.

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, “It’s clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off plastic objects and are moved by the wind. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. ”

Are they bad for us? We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health.

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, damaging ecosystems(生态环境) along the way. They start in our wastewater, when we wash clothes with plastic fibers(纤维). The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we’re eating the plastic as well.

【1】According to the passage, microplastics are ______.

A.pieces of plastic bigger than 5 millimeters

B.pieces of metal smaller than 5 millimeters

C.pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters

D.pieces of plastic smaller than 5 centimeters

【2】Which is the correct order of the following events?

①Waste water flows into rivers and seas.②People eat animals in the sea.

③People wash clothes with plastic fibers. ④Microplastics are eaten by sea animals.

    A.③①④②

    B.①③②④

    C.③①②④

    D.③②①④

【3】Which of the following about Microplastics is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics.

B.Microplastics flow over long distances before into oceans.

C.The deepest oceans have been polluted with plastic rubbish.

D.Microplastics are only eaten by sea animals.

【4】The writer wrote the passage mainly to tell us ______.

A.not to travel to the Arctic

B.not to eat animals in the oceans

    C.to use fewer plastic objects

    D.to wear a mask(口罩) when going out

【5】Where is the passage probably taken from? ________

    A.A story book.

    B.A doctor’s dairy.

    C.An environmental article.

    D.A travel magazine.

  • 25、   When Tom was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing too much housework. But when Tom was an adult, he had more job satisfaction, a better marriage (婚姻) and was healthier. Most of all, he was far happier.

These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more worthwhile lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained the ability to do things well and came to feel they were useful members of society," said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."

Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health (心理健康) scores with  their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problem.

The relationship between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with different people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been out of job. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.

1What do we knew about Tom?

A.He got little love from his parents.

B.He enjoyed his career and marriage.

C.He had few friends in his childhood.

D.He was disliked by others when young.

A.a description of personal values and social values

B.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men

C.an example for parents' expectations of their children

D.an analysis of the relationship between work and ability

3Vaillant's team got their findings by ________.

    A.studying the men's mental health

B.recording the boys' effort in school

    C.comparing different sets of scores

    D.deciding the men's problem-solving ability

4What does the underlined word "sharp" mean in Paragraph 4?

    A.严厉的 B.敏锐的 C.稳定的 D.明显的

  • 26、Do you laugh every day? Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day. That is a lot of laughter.

In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. The people in these clubs get together every morning. First, they stretch their hands above their heads. Then, they pretend (假装) to laugh. Soon everyone is laughing naturally. People say that they feel good after laughing together.

Scientists believe that laughter is good for us. Why? For one thing, laughter is good exercise. When you laugh, you exercise muscles (肌肉) in your body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs equal ten minutes of running. When you laugh, you also breathe deeply. This helps you relax. That is good for you, too.

Why do we laugh? That is a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group. They don’t laugh very often when they are alone. Many scientists believed that we use laughter to connect to other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group.

In England, people say that laughter is the best medicine. Some think that laughter helps sick people get well. Do you think so, too?

  • 27、   Girl Scouts(女童军) gave me a way to always feel at home, no matter where I moved.

I was born in Nebraska, but my first Girl Scouts troop was in North Dakota. We then moved to Utah when I was in the third grade, and I was in Girl Scouts of Utah from third grade until I graduated from the 12th grade in 1999.

When I got to Utah, I was the new kid in school, as we moved in January, about halfway through the school year. Making friends was hard. I don’t remember how long after we moved that my mom reached out to the local Girl Scouts council and found me a troop(队伍).

I remember that the girls in the troop welcomed me with open arms. It was nice to have friends to eat lunch and play with on the playground. My mom ended up becoming the leader of that troop, too! Girl Scouts was the connection to a new place. It was a way for me to make friends and meet people and gave me a sense of home.

After attending college in Utah, I moved to California and eventually got a job working for Angeles Girl Scout Council. I learned a lot while in Girl Scouts, including leadership skills and money management, but this has been the most useful skill that I learned: that Girl Scouts are connected to each other.

Thinking back, I first moved here with no job. I was living with my dad’s cousin and wasn’t really sure if it was going to work or if I was going to stay, but 16 years later, I’m still here—thanks in large part to the Girl Scouts.

I spent Thanksgiving with my co-workers at the Girl Scouts when I couldn’t go back home, I celebrated birthdays with them, and watched their kids grow up. I’ve learned and grown so much from the co-workers and the troop leaders that I have met through my job. Even as an adult, the Girl Scouts remain that connection and that lifeline for me—they are my extended family. That lesson is priceless!

1The author joined the Girl Scouts in Utah because ______.

    A.her friends introduced her

B.it was the rule of the new school

C.her mom was the leader a Girl Scouts troop

D.it was a good way to connect to a new place

2How did the author feel when she first moved to California?

    A.Frightened. B.Hopeless. C.Uncertain. D.Lonely.

3What is the most important lesson the author learned from her experience at the Girl Scouts?

    A.Difficulties help us become stronger.

B.A good leader is important to a team.

C.A valuable person is one with useful skills.

D.Where you can find a sense of belonging is home.
