24、A new robot, Pepper, has been designed. It is considered as the world's first with the ability to read human emotions. Pepper looks slightly like Michelin Man. It is four-feet tall with a computer in its chest and human-like hands. Although it is not tall, Pepper is able to talk about everything from the weather to the latest events about the country.
Using its functions, Pepper can react(反应) to people nearby -- making jokes, dancing and even singing in different languages. Pepper can understand expressions, human voice and actions, then react through computer programmes. The designer hopes to create a robot that can understand people well, then it can take action. He also hopes robots can play roles in many ways, not just work in the industry. They provide fun at the home or store. Pepper is designed to be a family robot. It is powered by love inside a family. He not only makes people laugh, but also comforts those people who are sad or lonely and encourage them when natural disasters come.
Pepper will be on sale in Japan for around US$2,000 in February 2015. For now, several Peppers are shown at some stores in Tokyo for visitors. The designers want the robots to get so much knowledge that they can succeed in communicating with humans better before sale.

25、 I'm often asked the question “How did you become a reporter?” You see, everybody expected me to follow in my father's footsteps and become a doctor. Well, during my last year of school I visited a career counsellor (职业顾问) named Lisa and I drove her crazy with my choices.
My first choice was a chocolate taster. Although Lisa didn't know the job well, she got me some information about it. I discovered that chocolate tasters make a lot of money, so I was sure I had found my dream job. However, when I found out that chocolate tasters don't just sit around eating chocolate all day, I lost my interest.
Next, I thought of becoming a football referee (裁判). I had loved football from a young age, but being a professional footballer was out of the question, as I couldn't play very well. However, it seems that referees must be able to run two and a half miles in less than twelve minutes and they are required to take exams throughout their training. So, my dream of becoming a referee died.
Finally, I had this idea of becoming a dog stylist (造型师). That was after I realized how much money our dog stylist, Shirley, was being paid. However, once, while she was styling Philipo, I noticed that he tried to bite (咬) her. “It happens all the time,” she told me. As you can imagine, that really put me off.

26、 “It’s good to talk,” some people say. I take a bus in London, there are certainly plenty of people talking on their mobile phones, sometimes too loudly, discussing and sharing personal information with a friend.
Many of us meet strangers every day no matter where we are. Some scientists studied this silent relationship and wondered if staying alone is a more positive(积极的)experience than communicating with strangers. They found that many people felt uncomfortable and ashamed talking to others and they said that many people just couldn’t understand how much a new person liked them when they started a conversation.
Their research showed that people who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the people sitting next to them was happy to chat with them. From this, this conclusion(结论)is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a good influence on our health. People are in a better mood after they have a conversation. It’s true that talking can make us feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health.
However, if we’re shy, the thought of speaking to strangers might make us anxious. But an American research found that all people were happier when they were asked to behave in a brave manner.
