  • 24、

One day, three of my friends came to our house.

They told me they wanted to go to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, "Yes, I want to go with you."

We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.

We left Brazil on the first of September, 1655. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other products.

At the beginning of our journey the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.

The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.

When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, "Land?" and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were crowded in the boat, and it had no sail.

The waves were very big. The wind was extremely strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.

Suddenly, a huge wave appeared and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn't breathe. I couldn't see tile others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.

Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I tried to go further froth the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

C.They headed for the nearest place to repair their ship.

D.They lost their way on the sea and gave up their ship.

【3】Which is NOT the reason for the boat becoming dangerous?

    A.Shallow water.

③ The writer was washed up on tile beach by a wave.

  • 25、   Playing video games can be a fun way to relax. It is a way to spend time with friends in schools. Teachers use video games like Minecraft to encourage teamwork. But for some players, gaming is an unhealthy habit. At night, they are glued to a screen. Their schoolwork becomes worse. The video-game world seems like a friendly place. It seems friendlier than the real world.

Mental health experts have taken notice. In June, the World Health Organization (WHO) added gaming disorder to its list of diseases and health conditions. A person may have the disorder if gaming has done harm to his or her relationships with family and friends. Gaming may also disrupt his or her everyday activities.

Not all experts agree with WHO . They don’t think too much gaming should be called a disorder. They say people hooked on(对……入了迷) video games may have other mental health problems. These should be treated first.

Others think WHO made the right call .Clifford Sussman, who has worked with kids as young as 12, says they often have feelings of anxiety(焦虑). They feel lonely. They get angry when a parent stops them from playing games.

Playing video games excites the brain’s reward center. After a while, the brain becomes numb(麻木) to pleasure. You feel bored without a controller in your hand. So you play even more.

Sussman advises you should take at least a one-hour break after every hour of play. The brain need time to return to a normal condition. Young gamers who think they might have a problem should ask an adult for help. Sussman suggests you first answer a simple question: “Are you in control, or is the game in control?”

1The underlined word "disrupt" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.

A.be valuable to B.have a bad influence on

C.have nothing to do with D.change in some way.

2Which of the following is Not Clifford Sussman’s opinion?

A.Too much gaming shouldn’t be called a disorder. B.Parents are helped to young gamers.

C.A break is necessary during the long video games. D.Kids hooked on video games age angry easily.

3The fifth paragraph is mainly about ________.

A.what excites the brain’s reward center B.how the brain becomes numb to video games

C.what makes you hook on video games D.how you feel without playing video games

4When the gamers are stopped from playing games they like very much, the gamers will be ________.

    A.anxiety B.lonely C.angry D.happy

5Why do some people hook on game-playing?

A.When they play the game, they are free from working./

B.When they play the game, the game excites their brain’s reward center.

C.When they play the game for a while, they will become numb to trouble.

D.When they don’t have a controller in hand, they will feel relaxed.

  • 26、A small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.

It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas. Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts—running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…,spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.

Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way.

Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤)at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.

As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.

Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot potential (潜力) , but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids—all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.

On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.

    1Justin hated Christmas because _____.

    A. he didn’t enjoy receiving gifts

    B. he had a hard time choosing gifts

    C. he spent too much money buying gifts

    D. he disliked putting gifts under the Christmas tree

2We know from the passage that the team sponsored by inner-city church_____.

    A. were well dressed   B. paid no attention to safety

    C. feared Kevin’s team   D. couldn’t afford a helmet

3How did Justin feel about the team’s failure ?

    A. Upset   B. Angry   C. Hopeless   D. Shameful

4Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. The Church Gift   B. A Special Note

    C. The White Envelope   D. A Christmas Card

  • 27、What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.

If you arrange the 26 English letters alphabetically(按字母表的顺序)and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c… you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, while love: 12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give us a full mark. What about money or prayer(祈祷)? They can’t, either.

Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude: 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100a full mark.

Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that one will have a change for the better after one has changed one’s attitude.

When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure, you’ll find it’s also rewarding though it has caused you losses.

1How can we solve a problem in our life according to the writer?

    A. Change the way how we look at things. B. Have different attitudes.

    C. Study math. D. Learn from others.

2Which of the following is TRUE?

    A. None of the words in English can give us a full mark.

    B. Failure can also be rewarding.

    C. The word “hard-work” has the highest mark.

    D. Nobody thinks attitude is the most important.

3It is possible that you will have a change for the better if you _______________.

    A. can work out the mark of every word B. have hard-work, knowledge, money and luck

    C. are friendly to others D. have a more positive attitude

4If we use numbers to represent “money” according to the text, what mark can we get?

    A. 70 B. 71 C. 72 D. 73

5What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Failures lead to success. B. People hope for a better life.

    C. Your life will be changed if you change your attitude. D. Knowledge is power.

As a child, I learnt how to make paper masks from newspapers and old magazines. Later I used coloured cardboard. Making masks seemed like a popular art activity. After we made the masks, my classmates and I would put them on and pretend to be people that we were not. By hiding our faces b 【1】 the masks, it did not seem ridiculous to pretend to be an old man or a baby. Immediately, the mask helped us to step into the shoes of a 2  character.

A mask allows a person to take on different characters, to pretend and make-believe. Have you ever w   3 what the actual face of the clown at the circus is like? The clown’s mask, with white smiling mouth and the round red cheeks, covers whatever the clown r   4  looks like.

Masks can also be used to hide what we do not want people to see. For example, the Phantom of the Opera, tells the story of a man who fell in l   5 with a beautiful woman. However, one side of his face was ugly and terrible to show anyone. Thus, he wore a mask to hide that part of his face.

Adults, more than children wear different masks every day. These are not actual masks like the types that are made in art classes in schools. These masks refer to the person’s ability to hide his real thoughts and feelings. He will behave in different ways no matter what he is actually feeling i 6 . Sometimes, we will put on a happy face even though we are s 7 . We wear masks because we do not want people whom we do not know well to know what we are actually thinking and feeling.
