四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、When US student Olivia Priedeman, 17, woke up one morning, she thought she had had a dream about making plans with a friend.

But it wasn't a dream. Her phone showed that during the night, Priedeman had read a text message from her friend. She did it while she was fast asleep.

Reading and sending text messages while asleep called─ "sleep texting"─ is an unusual sleep behaviour, similar to sleep walking. It's also a growing problem among doctors: young people can’ t live without their cell phones.

One in three teenagers sends more than 100 text messages a day, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. And at least four out of five teenagers said they sleep with their phone on or near their bed.

Elizabeth Dowdell, a professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, has studied sleep texting. She said that having a phone nearby all night is a big part of the problem.

Andrew Stiehm, a sleep medicine researcher with Allina Health in Minnesota, agrees. It's possible for the part of the brain that controls skills to wake up, while the part of the brain that controls memory and judgment(判断) may be still asleep. That's why some people can perform basic movements-such as walking, talking, texting or even driving while they're sleeping. Some of Dowdell's students said that they're disturbed by their nighttime texting behaviour. But because sleep texting is unconscious, it's a difficult habit to break. Dowdell said she knows of some students who wear socks on their hands to keep themselves from texting.

Marjorie Hogan, a doctor at Hennepin County Medical Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, suggests keeping all electronic products outside the bedroom.

    1What happened to Olivia Priedeman?

    A. She sleepwalked to a friend's house.

    B. She dreamed of making plans with a friend.

    C. She phoned one of her friends during the night.

    D. She read a text message from her friend while asleep.

2What does the underlined word "unconscious" mean?

    A. 无意义的   B. 无意识的   C. 无反应的   D. 无规律的

3What can we learn from the passage?

    A. It's easy to give up a sleep texting habit.

    B. One in three teenagers has a sleep texting habit.

    C. Sleep texting can reduce the quality of one's sleep.

    D. Sleep texting does more harm to one's health than sleep walking.

  • 26、   Yesterday, I met a delightful woman at a work event. As we talked, she talked about her childhood in Manila, Philippines. She spoke about the way her culture values their elders, and she explained that children are educated from the time of birth to honor and respect people older than themselves.

It was refreshing (使振作) to hear that, and I enjoyed listening and learning. Here is the memory she shared that I found, so beautiful:

When she was growing up, her father had three jobs to care for his family. She said her dad never complained, and though he worked very hard, he always had time for them. One day, her father was injured at his full-time job. For several months, he was mailed temporary (暂时的) disability checks(支票) while he recovered.

When her father was able to return to his full-time job, he took all those disability checks that were sent to him while he was recovering and handed them back to the company. He told them that he had two good legs and arms, and did not need this money. He told them to give the money to people who could not work, to people who really needed it.

The woman telling the story was a little girl at that time. She had accompanied her father that very day when he went back to his company with all those unopened checks.

"My father is my hero," she remarked. Lowering her voice, she said she would never forget what he did, and what an inspiration and influential mentor he was on how to live life. From my communication with her, it was very obvious that her father's same sweet spirit had been passed down to this woman, and to her family.

Hearing this story was so refreshing to my soul. I hope it is the same to you too.

1When the woman was talking about her childhood, the writer was probably ___________.

A.sad and moved B.surprised and angry

C.annoyed and disappointed D.interested and joyful

2What is implied about the woman's father when she was little?

A.He had little time to care for his family. B.He didn't think work was hard.

C.He did three very dangerous jobs to support the family. D.He thought it was important to spend time with his family.

3The woman's father took the temporary disability checks back to his company because___________.

A.he felt he was looked down upon

B.he wasn't satisfied with the amount

C.he thought others needed them more than him

D.he felt sorry that he had hurt himself by accident

4What did the writer find after talking with the woman?

A.The woman didn't know how hard life was.

B.The woman missed her father very much.

C.The woman's father influenced her in a good way.

D.The woman didn't think her father made the right decision.

5By writing the story, the writer ___________.

A.tries to tell us what we can learn from our parents

B.hopes we can get encouraged by good deeds

C.shows respect for real heroes in our lives

D.wants to ask us to value our family

  • 27、When I was a boy, I belonged to the Boy Scouts (童子军), so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain.

We were camping in a place above a river. After arriving, we all rushed down to the river and had a swim. Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded (环绕) by cliffs (悬崖). If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.

Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything.

We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the river—we stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.

An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we should creep (悄悄移动) down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone.

When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he doubted if we had seen the man, but finally suggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there.

Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday. What did we see? I do not know.
