Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian painter, spent about 15 years completing the Mona Lisa. He said it was one of his favourite paintings. It was so precious(珍贵的) to him that he kept it for himself until he died in 1519.
Leonardo da Vinci never revealed who was the model of the painting. Since his death, many people have tried to find out, and some people even suggest it is a self-portrait(自画像) of Leonardo da Vinci. One thing most Mona Lisa fans agree on is that it is her mysterious smile that makes the painting so special.
Who is the real Mona Lisa? It’s a question that has puzzled historians for centuries, and now historians think they may actually be a step closer to solving the mystery or one of the world’s most famous paintings. A group of experts have opened a tomb in the Italian city of Florence in the hope of finding some DNA samples(样本) which they think may hold the clue they need. The tomb is thought to contain the family of a woman called Lisa Gherardini. Historians think Lisa is buried in the nearby convent of Saint Ursula, where records show she died in 1542. 26、John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It’s been 3 months since I came to China. I’m having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I’ve completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn’t appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world. Lastly, I’d like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals —the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you’d like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
Yours,
John

27、Many of us don’t pay much attention to the importance of eye care. It is said that if you take care of your body, then you can surely be healthy. That is why our eyes should be given a lot of care. Natural eye care should be put in the first place.
There are several causes leading to poor eyesight like not eating enough food, genes(基因)and aging(老化).
Televisions, computers and reading are also the causes of having poor eyesight. If you happen to work in front of a computer, you’d better take a break every once in a while.
Something dirty can cause redness and it will make you feel uncomfortable. It is bad for your eyes, too. If this happens, the best way is to clean your eyes by using cold water. 28、Fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺。每空格限填一词,首字母已给)
One day I was driven by a rain-storm to take shelter in a little hut by the road-side, which was used by a shoe-maker as his workshop to fix shoes. The man and his son were busy with their work; and after saying, "Good day," we began to talk together.
Before I had been with them long, the old man sent his son out to get something that he needed for his repair. His son was only one kilometre away, but it was too long for the h【1】 shoe-maker to be free. He at last took up a piece of leather and began to work on it, saying, "You know, sir, it will never do to waste time."
As soon as the rain was over, I went on my way home, thinking over what I had heard, "It will never do to waste time." Some people are always lazy, others are lazy only now and then. I was one of the second ones. I couldn't f 【2】 my attention all the time. So the old man's words came home with me and I began to feel how w【3】it was to waste so much of my life in laziness.
I had often heard and read that laziness was great h 【4】; but now I begin to see that it causes far more disadvantages than people are aware of. They don't know the wasted time never goes back.
When a man is busy, he is said to be "occupied." What does that mean? It means that a man at work is like a house with people living in it. When our minds are full of our work, there is no s【5】 for anything else. Laziness, on the other hand, is emptiness; and when the mind is empty, then the doors are thrown open, and bad thoughts come in to influence your pure heart. When it once gets hold of a man, the habit of laziness isn't e【6】 got rid of.
I have made up my mind to follow the shoe-maker's rule for the rest of my life. Although it was very hard at first, I stick to it because I learn to r【7】 myself not to waste time. Above all, I decide that my mind should never be empty.

“Excuse me, but how long have you sat here?” I asked. “About four hours,” he answered with a smile on his face. “Four hours?” I couldn't believe my ______. “Yes. It’s very important to be patient,” the old man said. “I usually sit here and catch fish like this. Don’t consider ______ a tiring sport. Just enjoy looking ______ the beautiful mountains and water while you are waiting for the fish.”
Suddenly, I understood what the old man was saying and learnt how to be patient. I thanked him and then I sat there for half the day, waiting for the fish ______. This time when I felt a fish touching the bait, I didn’t move. Instead, I waited for the right moment to pull it in. Surely I caught it. That ______ I took over 10 fish home. Mum cooked them for dinner. How delicious it was!
