1、 1. A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have.
Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. If we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow.
2. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.

On Feb. 3, 2014, a girl from Massachusetts, the US, said that circuses(马戏团)should no more use hooks(钩子)or chains on elephants. And the government should do something
【2】 They can’t walk freely. And chains bring them great pain. Some people even use hooks when they train elephants. The hooks are sharp and bring elephants much more pain. Circus actors even push a hook into an elephant's body to move it along during a show. “After some time, the elephant's skin breaks down. It feels the pain, but it can’t say anything. It can' t say no to those cruel people." Sophie told local newspaper Marblehead Reporter. She also said that it would be bad for children.
【3】 Back in 2011, as a sixth-grader, she searched for different animal protection groups online and helped them.

24、 Girl Scouts(女童军) gave me a way to always feel at home, no matter where I moved.
I was born in Nebraska, but my first Girl Scouts troop was in North Dakota. We then moved to Utah when I was in the third grade, and I was in Girl Scouts of Utah from third grade until I graduated from the 12th grade in 1999.
When I got to Utah, I was the new kid in school, as we moved in January, about halfway through the school year. Making friends was hard. I don’t remember how long after we moved that my mom reached out to the local Girl Scouts council and found me a troop(队伍).
I remember that the girls in the troop welcomed me with open arms. It was nice to have friends to eat lunch and play with on the playground. My mom ended up becoming the leader of that troop, too! Girl Scouts was the connection to a new place. It was a way for me to make friends and meet people and gave me a sense of home.
After attending college in Utah, I moved to California and eventually got a job working for Angeles Girl Scout Council. I learned a lot while in Girl Scouts, including leadership skills and money management, but this has been the most useful skill that I learned: that Girl Scouts are connected to each other.
Thinking back, I first moved here with no job. I was living with my dad’s cousin and wasn’t really sure if it was going to work or if I was going to stay, but 16 years later, I’m still here—thanks in large part to the Girl Scouts.
I spent Thanksgiving with my co-workers at the Girl Scouts when I couldn’t go back home, I celebrated birthdays with them, and watched their kids grow up. I’ve learned and grown so much from the co-workers and the troop leaders that I have met through my job. Even as an adult, the Girl Scouts remain that connection and that lifeline for me—they are my extended family. That lesson is priceless!

25、There were three big fish in the lake. One of them, Demo, was wise; another one, Jimmy, was half-wise; Martin, the third one, was stupid.
Some fishermen came to the bank of the lake with their nets. The three fish saw them.
Demo decided at once to leave, to make the long and difficult trip to the ocean. He thought, “ I won’t discuss with these two about this. They love this place so much that they call it home and will stay on. How silly they are! They still haven’t realized we are in great danger now. Their ignorance will cost them their lives.”
Seeing the wise fish had left, Jimmy thought, “My guide has gone and now I’ve lost my chance to escape.” He felt sorry for it and then thought, “When can I do to save myself from these men and their nets? Perhaps I should pretend to be already dead, giving myself totally to the water.” So he did that. He went up and down with the water, helpless, within arm’s reach of the fishermen.
“ Look at this! The best and biggest is dead.” One of the men lifted him by the tail, and threw him up on the ground. He rolled over and over and moved secretly toward the water, and then, backed in.
The third fish was aimlessly jumping about, trying to escape with his speed and cleverness. The net, of course, finally closed around him, and as he lay in the hot frying-pan bed. He thought “If I get out of this, I’ll never live again in the limits of the lake. Next time, the ocean! I’ll make it my home.”

27、 LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.
Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice—eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”
Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend. On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor connected with heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡).” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”
In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”
